People really thought they meant they’d never have another sale at B&N again? Or that Criterion itself was shuttering?

I am mostly caught up with Criterion releases, but I ventured into a local Barnes & Noble store today and grabbed…
In the Mood for Love 4K (50% off) The Girl Can't Help It (50% off) Casablanca 4K (30% off) Saturday Night Fever 4K (30% off) Quentin Tarantino - Cinema Speculation (new nonfiction hardcover) With the exception of The Girl Can’t Help It, the movies are zero-sum additions to my collection, since I will be selling off my previous standard Blu-ray editions to a used store down the street, as always. ShellOilJunior will be happy to know that I also purchased my first Taylor Swift album, the “jade green” vinyl edition of Midnights. I like Taylor Swift in dark synth-pop mode. |

So Frederick Wiseman did an interview with Slate about his new fiction film, A Couple, and mentioned he is currently restoring his older films into 4K. That mixed with his appearance in the Criterion offices, well its ripe for baseless speculation of an early Wiseman boxset, or A Couple getting a Criterion release, or nothing at all.

It's a good album. I hated it the first few spins. I'm more of an early TS/folklore/evermore album guy. Gotta hear music with instruments!

Am I the only person when seeing this picture that starts singing "Miiiidnight, with the stars and yoooouuuuu...?"
![]() Well, I went for one more BD but bought it from Amazon; I sold my soul for Black Sabbath...no wait, that's not right...; because I only had enough moolah for one and free shipping minimum there is $25, not $40. So add that cheepo item and I get another CC title while having about $40 left the rest of the month for gas! Woo! If there's one advantage to social security disability and a fixed income it is that I don't have to drive around a lot. I watched Satyajit Ray's Devi earlier this year and loved it. Ray's starting to become one of my top 10 favorite directors. I already own the The Apu Trilogy so looking at the other titles Criterion has I decided on this one: ![]() |

The Music Room is an astounding tour de force (although sometimes Westerners may find the Indian classical music segments a little overwhelming) and The Big City is a wonderful example of his lightness of touch with a more mainstream narrative.

My first love is music so I'll probably have no problem with the music in The Music Room. Some of the music I listen to I guarantee would be stranger than Indian classical music. ![]() ![]() |

I live in the EU, so I can't order directly from B&N, but I took advantage of Amazon's price matching and got Blow Out on UHD. There are some other 1080p titles I wouldn't mind owning (i.e. Touki Book, Beau Travail, Daisies, La Llorona, Mirror), but at this point, after going 4K, I'm having a hard time justifying paying $30+ (after you factor in International shipping and import duty) on standalone 1080p releases.
Either way, I'm considering combining one of those five 1080p Criterions with a Cinema Guild blu-ray I'm interested in. Anyone want to help me choose which of those Criterions to get? None would be a blind buy. Mirror and Beau Travail do have UK CC editions though, so I'd probably just get those when the time comes. I guess then it's primarily between Daisies, Touki Bouki, and La Llorona. |

But, honestly, since 1980, I find myself singing that song often even without seeing that picture, LOL. |
