Given that it's an AI upscale of a very SD source, perhaps there were no significant differences between the two, and/or it resulted in a poorer image in 4K. Surely they would make more money if they released it on 4K as well. I mean, Lynch is one of their biggest sellers, so I have to imagine there were actual reasons for not releasing it on that format. My guess is this was ultimately up to Lynch, and he didn't feel it was good enough (or made enough of a difference) for 4K.

As for Inland Empire, expect a UHD release using that same hyped-up restoration in about a year or so. I'm in for Chilly Scenes of Winter and am glad they're including the alternate ending, which I have never seen. |

The 4K restoration is almost certainly for archival purposes. This shouldn't, and I'm glad it didn't, get a UHD.

Other extras which would have been nice to include: Inland Empire Stories and Quinoa from the Absurda DVD, AVID’s Room to Dream, Kermode, Figgis and Cartier Foundation interviews from Optimum’s release, and miscellanea like Rabbits, Dumbland, Lady Blue Shanghai, music videos, anthology film/arts institutions shorts and his website shorts from around the same time. It might have been nice to include the original master as an option too.
Chilly Scenes of Winter is missing the Twilight Time commentary, while Last Hurrah for Chivalry doesn’t seem as exciting as the Eureka release which was a double feature with Hand of Death. Last edited by CelestialAgent; 12-15-2022 at 04:53 PM. |

I don't know IF there would be any benefit at all for it to get a 4K UHD release, I'm not going to try to pretend or argue otherwise, but at the same time, why all these 4K restorations to sit in storage? |

I like the Mildred Pierce pick for UHD. It's very encouraging seeing a 1940s b/w movie get a 4k release.
I was tempted to predict The Last Temptation of Christ UHD for March. Additionally, I almost made reference to a certain director being born in March and how that might affect the March release slate, but I did not. |

And it doesn't matter whether they show the new restoration on the Criterion channel, rent it out to studios, or lock it away in a vault somewhere, a high resolution version should be properly archived. |

Still, it's important to preserve these. Better to create a higher resolution copy for using than to constantly tap the source. |
