Beyond pi$$ed off.
Given that it's an AI upscale of a very SD source, perhaps there were no significant differences between the two, and/or it resulted in a poorer image in 4K. Surely they would make more money if they released it on 4K as well. I mean, Lynch is one of their biggest sellers, so I have to imagine there were actual reasons for not releasing it on that format. My guess is this was ultimately up to Lynch, and he didn't feel it was good enough (or made enough of a difference) for 4K.

Based on the way they were hyping up the restoration of Inland Empire, I did think they were going to release it on 4K as well, but maybe that was just stretching that master way too far.
By my count, that's really just 3 new titles. Mildred Pierce is just using the existing 4K restoration, which they used for the blu ray release, for this UHD release. Other than that, it's the exact same content. I find it odd that they're including the blu ray disc with this release when the existing blu is still in print.

As for Inland Empire, expect a UHD release using that same hyped-up restoration in about a year or so.

I'm in for Chilly Scenes of Winter and am glad they're including the alternate ending, which I have never seen.

Odd for all that "4K" restoration work to go into Inland Empire to get a Blu-ray release. I feel like there was endless discussion about it's production, to be relegated to a blu-ray seems off.
The 4K restoration is almost certainly for archival purposes. This shouldn't, and I'm glad it didn't, get a UHD.

Inland Empire not being on 4K is almost a deal breaker, like it would look better then the current blu-ray, at least they didn't lie like the recent The Straight Story release from Australia.

Other extras which would have been nice to include: Inland Empire Stories and Quinoa from the Absurda DVD, AVID’s Room to Dream, Kermode, Figgis and Cartier Foundation interviews from Optimum’s release, and miscellanea like Rabbits, Dumbland, Lady Blue Shanghai, music videos, anthology film/arts institutions shorts and his website shorts from around the same time. It might have been nice to include the original master as an option too.

Chilly Scenes of Winter is missing the Twilight Time commentary, while Last Hurrah for Chivalry doesn’t seem as exciting as the Eureka release which was a double feature with Hand of Death.

To get stored with the Arc of the Covenant? Aside from theatrical screenings that seems like a collosal waste of time, money and effort to not release it for those who would buy it.

I don't know IF there would be any benefit at all for it to get a 4K UHD release, I'm not going to try to pretend or argue otherwise, but at the same time, why all these 4K restorations to sit in storage?

Hopefully after IE they tackle BV and then Wild at Heart on UHD. Since Stanton got Disney to license there's no reason Lynch can't do the same for The Straight Story too.

I like the Mildred Pierce pick for UHD. It's very encouraging seeing a 1940s b/w movie get a 4k release.

I was tempted to predict The Last Temptation of Christ UHD for March. Additionally, I almost made reference to a certain director being born in March and how that might affect the March release slate, but I did not.

I don't understand that line of reasoning. Archival purposes? This is a company that makes money off of these restorations. Not releasing this in 4K now comes off as shady to me. You know they will release it in 4K down the line, after many have purchased it on blu-ray. Do you think they'll show the 4K scan on the Criterion Channel, or will they just show the lesser rez version, since they're just archiving the 4K restoration?

I agree that this particular film may not even benefit from 4K, but if they went to all that trouble then put it out on 4K disc. Benefit or not you know they will at some point.

For the most part, aside from niche titles that will probably never get another release, or crazy deals, I've stopped buying blu-rays.
I have stopped buying their blu-rays that I'd prefer to have in 4K. I've only been buying blu-rays for films I don't care enough about to own in 4K. I just feel we're far enough along in the format that every release should be made available in 4K.

In for Last Hurrah for Chivalry, but I am wondering whats going on with the Heroic Trio. Feel like we should have had that by now.

Film preservation purposes. Would you rather I say that than archival purposes? In my mind it's the same. They're making sure there's a completed version scanned in the highest resolution possible. This was shot using SD digital sources. A UHD disc would literally be wasting money, for the consumer and the company.

And it doesn't matter whether they show the new restoration on the Criterion channel, rent it out to studios, or lock it away in a vault somewhere, a high resolution version should be properly archived.

I understood what you meant, but once again, if the film would not benefit from a higher resolution version, why make it? I get preserving it, but just for preservation sake is silly.

"Check out this thing we made that you'll never see".

I'm not trying to be confrontational, it just seems pointless.

4K restoration = / = UHD disc. It could play in theaters or what not.

Still, it's important to preserve these. Better to create a higher resolution copy for using than to constantly tap the source.
