I could live with that. Their sales would drop so badly they’d be forced into finally giving us the Kurosawa box!

I wonder if Criterion might be giving us a 4k of Profound Desires of the Gods in the near future.

Just throwing this it there but around the same time Nikkatsu put up a 4k trailer of Branded to Kill with English subs they also put up one for Profound Desires with English subs as well:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-kssYZjaA6Q

Of course could also mean nothing, or it could end up being picked up by someone else (maybe for blu ray).

I agree no one should be panicking yet, but also felt it was worth pointing out that the flash sale is normally in February, not March. That means it's actually the 7th of the month after the month that usually has the sale, so I can understand a bit more anxiety than usual. But I'm still not worrying yet.

Criterion Channel has this film on their app (Although it's not on the front page). I believe it is owned by Janus Films at the moment, so chances are very likely. Branded to Kill did end up getting released first though. It is Suzuki's centennial birthday on that month (May 2023). Also won the Best Restored Film at the Venice Film Festival Classics last year so I have some expectations for this one. I wouldn't be surprised if Profound Desires is down the line as well. These are the only Nikkatsu films restored in 4K so far (I believe).

Profound doesn’t seem too hidden to me. Popped up right when I searched it. It also starts with the Criterion C.

Usually but the Flash sale has happened in March. And it's not even past the latest day the sale has occurred.

Man, I would love to see this get a release. It's one of Rentaro Mikuni's best performances. I've long expected this to get a release from Criterion, but nothing. Maybe it's more possible now that it's in 4K.

But how can Stormtroopers beat a dead horse?

They never hit anything.

I’d be surprised if Criterion halted the Flash sales, even after the layoffs. Yes, their profit margin per item is lessened when they do so. But a whole lot of people wait for the two sales to do a good portion of their shopping, and when they hit, Criterion realizes a pretty substantial influx of cash.

The problem is Criterion has trained us too well on these sales. You can’t stop giving your dog a treat every time he takes a dump outside and not expect a few surprises in your slippers.

Welp you heard it here first!
That's incorrect.

I have it on good sources that all 50 % Off flash sales have been discontinued until I stop asking for:

Big Kurosawa Box
Big Pasolini Box
Big Scorsese Box
The Complete Works of Jean Eustache Box

... Which I do every month, but none of which has ever happened, yet.

Those who'd desire I stop so that the Flash Sales come back, signify by saying, 'Aye'....

I remember a Flash Sale falling on Valentine's Day one year. There is no set date and there is no indication they have stopped having them.

I actually love his earlier films too like Sugata Sanshiro and The Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail. I think both are underrated and are fantastic.

Reading about the possibility of Profound Desires of the Gods getting an upgrade is exciting too. I think Imamura would be a good place to start with an Eclipse like release for his earlier works (like the DVD release they did for 3 of his films). There's enough for an Eclipse like release but not for a more comprehensive Imamura box set (seeing that Arrow holds the rights for several of his other big ones).

Criterion has most of his 60's works so a boxset would be fantastic. Film Movement is releasing his final film in theaters soon and I'm also hoping someone picks up The Eel.

Outside of Profound Desires of the Gods, I really want Pigs and Battleships. I love his take on the crime genre.

I'm so happy I got that Eureka/Masters of Cinema BD set before it went OOP and became expensive as all hell.

I have that BD set, plus the Criterion 3 DVD set, The Criterion DVD of "The Pornographers", plus the Criterion stand-alone BD of "Vengeance is Mine" (I have their DVD from before that, too), and I have the beautiful Arrow BD set.

I'd love to see nice releases of a couple of his later works, like "The Eel" or "Warm Water Under a Red Bridge".

Also, I'd like to see (maybe as bonus supplements on something) some of his 70s documentary work. A few of them used to be on Youtube, but got taken down.

Since this is being released in theaters this month, I'd imagine we'll get Blu-ray news in maybe 3-5 months or so. The UK really does get a lot of good titles and hope some of those make it over here from the MoC set. It's all in Criterions court.

Sorry. A bit old hat this. But are there fans of Kieslowski's Three Colors who have just decided they don't want these 4k restorations for the way they've changed fundamentally the color grading so at the heart of the original project?

At first I thought I'd get the 4k set as it still incudes the original 2011 blus with their original color grading. But now I'm thinking why bother with that even? Just stick with 2011 blus that pretty much get the job done.

That would be incredible. The blu ray is OOP and going for ridiculous prices so I never picked this up. A 4k would be day one!
