Just today I was thinking, with so many Eureka Masters of Cinema blus going OOP, how many from Pasolini I still needed. But now I can just pick up another outstanding director set from Criterion. Fantastic!

Pasolini!!!! I’ve been revisiting all his movies that I don’t have on Blu-ray on the Criterion Channel. I am psyched for this. First sale after its release I am all over it.

What do we think of the use of "101" in the title? It's a bit... um I dunno.

I love how the preview video starts with a shot of Franco Citti, one of Passolini's favorite actors. He is also known for portraying Michael Corleone's non-traitor Sicilian bodyguard Calo in The Godfather.

I'd love to see Criterion release SubUrbia (1996) since they've already released a lot of Richard Linklater before

Can't remember the poster who, last year, would often go on about Criterion releasing a Pasolini for his centennial. But he must be so happy!

Awesome to see them doing a Pasolini box. I’m not his biggest fan but this is amazing for those who love his works. I hope they do many more of these kind of box sets.

With today's announcement of High and Low and Kagemusha announced for 4k UHD in Japan this brings the total of Kurosawa UHD's in Japan to 6 (2 per month).

We also know that Rashomon, Seven Samurai, and The Hidden Fortress also have brand new 4k scans yet to be released. Since they seem to be doing them in pairs we might get those paired with one other (possibly The Bad Sleep Well or Red Beard) for a total of 10x UHD's released in Japan from Toho all within a 5 months span.

I believe this should result in them all being released by July (the current 6 scheduled are for March, April, and now May). This also means Criterion could potentially announce a Kurosawa boxset for November as the Japanese releases being out paves the way for Criterion to be able to release it here.

If Criterion can make a deal with Studio Canal to also snatch Ran which has a 4k UHD out in the UK, a potential Kurosawa boxset from Criterion could contain as much as 11 UHD's! Imagine what a dream that would be! Would probably also cost a bundle but that would be fine and understandable.

Maybe we shouldn't get our hopes up too much but things are looking good!

It was also released in the U.S. from Lionsgate as 4k UHD Steelbook Best Buy exclusive, but it has since gone OOP. So that could either be a good sign or mean absolutely nothing.

Criterion don’t release Japanese films no more, sad to say.

There's been recent reports of the SB showing back up at BB the last week. I think some stores apparently put them out early, so it sounds like a possible reprint happened.

That's so awesome about Toho releasing all these Kurosawa 4K's, but isn't Rashomon with Kadokawa and not Toho (pretty sure this is the case)?

I think next month will be Seven Samurai and The Hidden Fortress, and that might be it unless they also do The Bad Sleep Well and Red Beard too (and I can see them doing this).

That would still be either 8 or 10 4K UHD's now released in Japan for Criterion to work with!

Kadokawa has Rashomon remastered so I guess they might put it out in 4K in Japan sometime. The question might be whether or not Criterion can go ahead and release it first if it's exclusively a part of a box set. If they need to wait for Kadokawa to do a release first I can kind of see them waiting since Rashomon is such a big one.

By the way all of these are SDR only, which imo is totally good as the new scans and the extra resolution should still be an incredible upgrade.

Just realized there's also Throne of Blood and Drunken Angel. No way Toho would skip on doing those so my guess is 10~12 UHD's by the end of the year (hopefully they also do The Bad Sleep Well and Red Beard).

For all you know they'll go all the way and do I Live in Fear and The Lower Depths too for a total of 14 UHD's, but I guess those might be question marks.

I'm sometimes excited by the prospect of a Kurosawa box also because it'd free up like a full shelf of single discs in my Criterion section ooooweeeeee.

My bad, yes Rashomon is Kadokawa. Seeing that the last blu ray dates from 2009 I fully expect Kadokawa to have it out in Japan sometime soon as well, especially seeing that a 4K restoration has already been done.

I agree that Criterion will surely wait to be able to use the new Rashomon restoration for a box set too. So then either this year November or next year maybe?

My guess is a Criterion Kurosawa boxset will end up using new 4k scans for almost all the films (like the Fellini box) minus the early films many of which don't have surviving elements that would benefit that much anyway, and maybe Dreams which I expect will just be the existing blu ray of the 4k restoration (just because I don't see Criterion holding off the boxset over that movie).
