Watched the trailer for Medicine for Melancholy... looks like it was made by the group who made Birdemic: Shock and Terror.

I'm sorry, but anyone who actually thins this is one of Criterion's worst years, or even that this is somehow not an incredibly strong year already is seriously deluded and have their tastes so narrowly constricted that it blocks off all senses of actual reality.

I just watched the Criterion Time Bandits BD last night with a double feature of Brazil. The BD is good enough for me. The 4K would just end up being scratched and/or wouldn't play all the way through in my Sony player.

The Seventh Seal release was pointless. No DV, or even HDR, which means just buy the BFI release. The lack of Japanese cinema really is disappointing though.

It seems like there are two groups of people who complain about Criterion releases every month, one who wants new releases of films not yet available or one who wants a pristine 4K release of every A24 movie.

The one thing I could potentially see bugging me in the future for 4K is the slow drip of a collectors filmography. I would much rather have an expensive box set of Malick or Andersen and not have to wait 2-3 years for releases to come out. I’m curious if Criterion is not confident enough in a 4K set to release them yet, or they need to pad out their release schedule.

Yeah, I'll take them all too. The Holy Grail probably wouldn't be too far out since like DimitriL said, it has been released on Laserdisc by Criterion in the past, but I have no idea about the rights.

Not to mention that a potential Princess Bride UHD got leaked.
You know it's a good year when all of your potential flash sale titles are ones that were released this year.

I’m starting to picture a lot of users as Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons, “Worst Criterion lineup ever”!

Or they just don't buy every single title Criterion releases/have different tastes.

Outside of Romeo & Juliet, Inland Empire, Targets, Europa Box and Branded to Kill nothing really screams out at me personally, and a couple of those are blind buys, so I don't even know if I'll love them. Doesn't mean they are bad titles. Which leads me to their 4K releases. As much as I appreciate their entry into 4K, lots of titles lack Dolby Vision/HDR. They are upgrading fairly recent blu-ray titles while titles on DVD sit waiting for a remaster/new scan for many years.

I recall times when Criterion would make an announcement and I'd be floored. The last time that happened was probably The Godzilla Set, which ended up not so fantastic of a release anyways. I don't think it's the worst year ever, but Criterion and Arrow have been pretty lackluster for me as of late, and I've seen a few others echo that as well.

That being said, I'm always happy to see folks getting excited for these releases, but I even stopped setting remidners for the 15th to check on the releases, because they have definitely moved away from the types of titles I personally care for that they used to release, and that's fine.

Studio Canal is showing a preview of movies and saying some are coming soon. In the trailer under the “coming soon” was The Ice Storm. I hope there’s a chance it’s getting restored and gets a 4K release! I’d take even a new Blu-Ray!

It's like a parody at this point, how reflexively people just groan CRITERION IS DONE FOR after every single lineup is announced no matter how good it is.

Does this happen to any other boutique label? Arrow or Vinegar Syndrome can announce some grimy old 16mm horror movie and people cream their pants. Criterion can announce a Pasolini box set and people say they need to step their game up.

It's bonkers.

Gross exaggeration, people complain in Arrow and VS all the time. People "cream their pants" here about the 87th release of Time Bandits. It happens with all labels.

They've had some great releases this year to be sure. I'm just having a hard time patiently waiting for Kurosawa or Ozu to get some love.

This is a title that’s been rumoured since Moonlight came out - with Jenkins’ closet video, his Adventures in Moviegoing and short films on FilmStruck. Hopefully after Small Axe we might see The Underground Railroad in future. Does Todd Field even allow extras?

Feels like another The Elephant Man and Crash situation, and the extras don’t seem as strong as SC’s.

It’s because The Rules of the Game got a theatrical rerelease.

Time for my decennial plea for Criterion to release La Ciociara (aka Two Women). So, here goes:

WHAT? No La Ciociara????

Thank you for listening.

That title typography on Time Bandits is revolting. Why not use the original lettering? This makes it look like a CD-ROM of fonts from 1997.

Like with most of the Handmade library, the elements for Time Bandits are in a notoriously bad state, and they only just managed to scrape it together in HD for the Bluray, so a 4K presentation sounds like snake oil to me.
