On another note....
Looking forward towards the 15th, I have been begging for a Pasolini box and Scorsese's After Hours for so long, every month, and now have both coming out, that I really don't know what to ask for, LOL. I'm not expecting a big box (like Kurosawa or Ozu) in August (if they're coming at all). I don't expect another Scorsese the month after After Hours. I've held off on buying the BFI "EO", waiting for Criterion's. Hope it comes soon. I always say I'd love some more Bertolucci, but I'm not even sure he's on Criterion's radar at all, right now (I haven't heard anything). Like others, I'd like some more Japanese stuff, like Oshima or Shinoda. I just really don't know what to expect this month, to be honest. |

I feel like we’re gonna get more Japanese films by Criterion this year. One film I’m predicting will come out this year is Profound Desires of the Gods, which was screened in 4K alongside Branded to Kill (The latter won the award for Best Classic Film Restoration).

I have the now-rare OOP Eureka/Masters of Cinema box set of Shohei Imamura. I'm glad I bought it when I did.
It contains BDs of "Pigs and Battleships", "The Insect Woman", two early films: "Stolen Desire" and "Nishi Ginza Station", "Profound Desires of the Gods", "Vengeance is Mine", and "The Ballad of Narayama". It contains a DVD of "A Man Vanishes". I also have the Criterion DVDs of that box set (Pigs and Battleships, The Insect Woman, Intentions of Murder), the Criterion DVD of "The Pornographers", and the Criterion DVD of "Vengeance is Mine". I also upgraded to the Criterion BD of "Vengeance is Mine". I have the Arrow box set that contains BDs of " The Ballad of Narayama", "Zegen", and "Black Rain". Now, I've pre-ordered the new BD that's coming out this month of "Warm Water Under a Red Bridge". I'm sure I'll double dip if Criterion releases anything else on blu. What I'd really love are upgrades of "Intentions of Murder" and "The Pornographers", and I need someone to release "The Eel". I'd love a set where the supplements include some of his documentary work from the 70s. That is all basically unavailable. |

I watched An Actor's Revenge last week and was blown away by it. I was planning to watch Three Outlaw Samurai but it turned out I didn't own it. I hate when I do that.

Actor's Revenge was great. Beautiful film too. I've only seen that and Inugami Family by Kon Ichikawa and I want to see more.
As for Shohei Imamura I expect a 4K UHD release of Profound Desires of the Gods must be planned for sometime soonish (I hope). A boxset would be a dream come true but they're missing the rights for too many of his big ones (for sure: Narayama, Zegen, Black Rain, and his later films). They could do a set for the older films of which they hold the rights though? Anything of Imamura they could release I would buy. Mizoguchi boxset is long long overdue. Masters of Cinema had one out ages ago (out of print and selling for hundreds and hundreds on the second hand market). Still of all possible Japanese boxsets nothing is as overdue as an Akira Kurosawa boxset. Many of his classics are still stuck on DVD in the Criterion collection, while several other countries have nice blu rays out for them including France. I can only assume this is being worked on to some degree already? |

I'd love to see Richard Linklater's SubUrbia (1996) released. One of the most underrated movies of the 1990s and Criterion has released lots of his films before

Now that someone mentions Ichikawa, I do hope Criterion can release more of his stuff later on. He would probably be among the legendary trio of directors alongside Kurosawa, Ozu, and Mizoguchi IF he had a style that he stayed with over the years. However, it is the diversity in his filmography, from the more contemplative Makioka Sisters to the intense, extravagant Tokyo Olympiad, that makes me a bigger fan of his films over many other directors. Suzuki still takes my no.1 spot for Japanese directors, but I would actually consider Ichikawa as a potential nominee for second place alongside the trio and Oshima (The latter only because I've been doing essays on his films lately, so I've had a deeper interest in his works than other directors at the moment).
For those familiar with Ichikawa, I highly recommend checking out his lesser-known works. The Inugami Family (1976), for instance, is scored with an absolutely funky soundtrack to accompany the psychedelic visuals. The other films of the Kohsuke Kindaichi series that the film is based on hasn't all been translated into English yet, but they are all really interesting mystery films on par with the Sherlock Holmes series mixed with bits of supernatural horror (Almost gothic in some ways). |

That's happened to me a few times. There are titles that over the years, I've added and removed from my cart during various sales, and I've gotten the idea that I've actually pulled the trigger on them, when in fact I have not.
