Not ready yet to start upgrading all of my great-looking Criterion blu rays to 4K versions (and not sure I ever will honestly), unless it's like a top-50 favorite of mine or something, so skipping Princess Bride and Walkabout. To me, 4K announcements of previously released Criterion blus are pretty much wasted spots. Good for everyone who wanted them though
4K certainly makes it an expensive habit. This may be heretical, but I’m at the point where I’d be happy just spending a tenner on a digital 4K version on iTunes for several films out there over getting a disc. Obviously for titles like North by Northwest, Eyes Wide Shut, and 8 1/2 I’d go disc without question, but something like Wings of Desire or The Apartment I’m not so sure.

Finally I can discard my faulty Walkabout Blu.

More Bowie in the Criterion Collection. It's a shame Criterion couldn't do the newer restoration or UHD of Man Who Fell To Earth, their disc still hasn't been topped.

You and me both!! I think the odds of both coming out at the same time or even relatively closely are slim and none. Isle of Dogs is due though, and then in another couple of years we'll hopefully get French Dispatch. I will wait as long as it takes, as long as we get them. I've just gone through a Wes Anderson Criterion marathon the past couple of weeks, in preparation for Asteroid City. The releases have really all been great. Lots of really good special features and nice transfers. As happy as I am with all of them, I'd be willing to buy them all again in 4K.

Me too, very disappointing as it's a favorite of mine. I have the Twilight Time release, which I will probably sell and get this one. Outside of that I will be getting everything, and I am happy to say I only have Princess Bride. It's one of my favorites as well, so I definitely want to upgrade it.

A stellar month of releases! And yet I bet there will somehow still be a good deal of belly-aching in the comments whenever the site puts these announcements on the front page.

heads up to anyone excited for the Criterion UHD of THE TRIAL that their release does not list the 4K as having HDR which the Studio Canal UHD from last year does have (and can be bought pretty inexpensively, at that)

I’m definitely in for La Bamba since I missed the Twilight Time disc. I was wondering what was taking so long for a reissue. A shame it’s not 4K, but I’m happy to see it back in print.

I’ll pick up The Princess Bride and The Trial at some point too. I wonder if Criterion will release The Third Man on UHD.

You’re definitely in the minority there. It’s even in the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry.

Always funny seeing the flood of Twilight Time discs on eBay right after another boutique announces a re-issue of one of their titles. La Bamba was going for $100+ just yesterday, now it's going to drop like crazy. I don't blame them for trying though.

Have not been keeping up on what films Criterion has, so the La Bamba announcement was a really nice surprise. Just watched that Bowie flick last week along with the new Velvet Underground doc. I'm a big Bowie fan, but I'm still not entirely sure how I feel l about Moonage Daydream....

With that and Eureka's announcement of Touch of Evil coming to the UK, its Orson-palooza in September. The UK are having an absolute time of it right about now

Really good month and I might honestly buy all of them.

Moonage Daydream is the star of this month’s announcement. An absolute audiovisual extravaganza and I’m forever mad that I wasn’t able to experience this in IMAX because the projector broke (As a David Bowie fan, I’m never forgiving myself for not experiencing this in IMAX). I’m surprised by the lack of HDR or Dolby Vision listed on the site. Considering this is a newer film and that the director is still alive, I would’ve thought that there would be some discussion and work for an HDR grade in this release. I also wished we could get some concert footage as extras such as the “Station to Station” Isolar II performance that the director (Brett Morgen) shared a brief preview of on his Twitter a while ago. Hoping this will have good encoding because most of the footage comes from actual film so there should be a LOT of grain.

I have never seen La Bamba but I might have to give it a watch before locking in an order for this during the next B&N sale it’s available in.

I also have never seen The Trial before but it’s probably the oldest film that I have owned in my library (Actually my iTunes account before I started getting into home video) that I have still yet to watch. Lionsgate, the distributor of this film, actually removed it from iTunes a few years ago but I managed to secure a copy online to watch this anytime. I’ve read the book and seen a lot of films directed and starring Orson Welles and I like Anthony Perkins and Jeanne Moreau but I have no reason why I’ve been holding this one out for so long. I will have to look into the lack of HDR and might end up going for StudioCanal if Criterion’s encoding isn’t so good (Criterion is cheaper than the StudioCanal import so my eyes are still on Criterion for now).

I’ve never bought a home video release of Princess Bride but I’m well aware that there was a German 4K UHD release of this. I’m not a hardcore fan as others have been for this film but I can see myself revisiting this occasionally. Definitely placing an order for this as well.

Happy that not only Walkabout is having its 4K UHD debut (I believe so since the 4K restoration was used in the 2019-2020 Second Sight edition) but also including a HDR grading as well. Considering that Criterion doesn’t do HDR grading on their 4Ks, I was surprised it was this film that got it and not Moonage Daydream, which seemed like the more likely of this month’s release to get it (Princess Bride has HDR grading as well).

Overall, I’m going to placing an order on every title this month, which is a first for me.

To Criterion: My name is Neonical. You killed my wallet. Prepare to buy.

I haven't counted but I'd bet that more of Criterion's 4Ks have HDR than don't.

Maybe someday we’ll get a new release of The Buddy Holly Story to go with La Bamba.

Yeah, I’m not sure where that comes from. Their 4Ks without HDR are wildly the exception.

Correct. Criterion have 45 4K releases to date, and 35 of them have HDR. Of the remaining 10, 6 of them are Director-approved additions, meaning it was likely their decision to not use it (this is for sure true for Triangle of Sadness, and Virgin Suicides)

I just want to say that I LOVE that Robert Rodriguez’s The Director’s Chair episode with Luis Valdez is included on the La Bamba disc. I adored that show.
