I don’t know why WB would do that, since that would effectively end sales of EWS before they began. That would be like if they restored the 1972 cut of ACO and shoved the 71 cut. If Dallywhitty heard they only restored the edited cut of EWS he would go ape shit, assuming he doesn’t know about it already.

From what I heard, the cut on the 2007 Blu-ray - with three differences - is exactly what Kubrick gave them before his death six days later. The three differences are the aspect ratio (he intended 1.37:1, they matted it to 1.78:1), the soundtrack (it’s unclear what he wanted the soundtrack to be, but IMDb lists “Dolby” and the studio did a 5.1), and one Jocelyn Pook track that was deleted by the studio for fear of offending people (it was either the Hindus or the Buddhists, I forget).

This cut, as presented by Kubrick before his death, was rated NC-17, and WB made some minor edits. While nothing was cut per se (both cuts are the same length down to the frame), certain more explicit scenes were either optically covered or CGI’d out, and that edited cut was rated R.

I have never heard concrete evidence about secret society bits being cut out, just musings on the internet. I’m more than ready to be proven wrong though.

Yeah, I agree with that, very intimate. Apparently it was the first scene that Sutherland and Christie shot together for the film, which is kind of insane.

Basically, if the 4K title is a new addition to the collection (not including Laserdisc releases), the included BD will be from the same source/restoration as the 4K. If it's an upgrade of an existing Criterion release, with the exception of Le Cercle Rouge, it'll be the old/existing BD transfer. I don't really like the practice at all, and consider it to be pretty lazy. It also leads to some notable differences between the BD and 4K, as in the case of the Three Colors Trilogy. It also alienates those that haven't upgraded to 4K yet, as the 4K release offers nothing new whatsoever to incentivize this sizable demographic to double-dip.

As of yesterday, that cover was a fan-made mockup of the WAC Blu-ray of Freaks that never happened.

What other WB titles is Criterion rumored to have? After Hours, Freaks, what else?

Don’t take those pages as gospel. Wait until photos of the set come out. People when making pages hit the wrong button all the time. The Mai Zettering set is still listed as a digipack but it isn’t. Also looks like someone took the digipack off, because I don’t see it listed on the link you provided.

Once again no movies featuring Texans. Where is the representation for these poor folks? Wait until The Wall Street Journal writes a scathing editorial about it, that will wake them up!

The Browning set looks great, but I wouldn't have minded a few more extras given that the three films are rather short. A visual essay or two would have been really welcome or at the very least a commentary on THE UNKNOWN by Michael F. Blake. Missed opportunity there. But still stoked for the set, of course.

Nothing else on the docket this time that I am interested in or don't already have. I realize the current market doesn't support more releases, but I sure wish Criterion and the Warner Archive had two sets of announcements each month instead of one.

All three Digipack covers are listed here too. And yes, someone removed it from the Freaks listing here.

Lol it's not possible to have three digipacks in the set because there's only two discs. Criterion creates new cover art for films that don't have individual cases all the time, it doesn't mean anything.

That link isn’t working for me. But let me reiterate my point. We don’t know what the packaging looks like. So unless someone who actually worked on the set says it’s a digipack or photos of the actual set come out, then let’s not jump to conclusions. It’s completely ok to wait for all the information before reacting and complaining.

This just came up in the Ranown Western set. Criterion website has individual covers posted but the movies are sharing discs.

Well, Zierra claims the new doc will reveal what it was, and its already getting pushback from festivals that are refusing to show it, so there's something in it they don't want you to see.

He specifically claims there was one moment that the studio cut that changes the perception of the entire film. Could be truth, could be hyperbole, but there's been rumors from Day 1 that WB cut something out, and then Kubrick mysteriously died a week after presenting his cut. Conspiracy theories abound, but there's some mystery there for sure.

Someone named Antony Adler posted this in a Facebook group Zierra:

Quote:
I had the honour of being at Tony Zierra's SK13 zoom call just now. We'll have to wait to see the film to really decide, but from what we heard, this could be absolutely mind-blowing. The film will focus of EWS, but also of the process across his whole career. Aside from plenty of interviews and being generally really interesting, there seems to be brand new information about a missing moment from the film that will show the movie in a whole new light. It's not going to be some consipiracy nonsense, nothing about orgies, or MK ultra, or the CIA or SK being killed, but it will be very, very interesting.
Someone else posted

Quote:
It sounded to me like the missing shot (and why it was removed) is what kickstarted the whole idea of making the documentary in the first place and may be a key theme in the (SK13 documentary) film. I’m intrigued to least the least.
And that's what I heard, that the DCP is censored, from people who had seen the new screening. But it could be that way for playing theatrically and still keeping an R rating, who knows. The DCP for 2001 was different than the UHD disc (the DCP had Nolan's gray/green color grading while the disc did not), so one doesn't necessarily mean the other is tainted.

It's hard to be unhappy with the pair of Freaks and The Unknown, but man, The Unholy Three would have been a perfect fit and there for the taking from WB.

That said, I'm holding out hope that WAC will deliver some additional Browning, especially the Chaney titles, and who knows, the success of the Criterion set may move them forward in the queue for restoration and or release.
The Unholy Three would be nice. I have a hunch they’ll release The Devil-Doll in October.

It's def a dream of mine to get rid of that Legends of Horror collection. I'd move it if I was waiting on Return of Doctor X (I don't particularly need to own that one), but that still leaves Devil Doll and Fu Manchu.

This list was posted back in 2017 some of it has already been released by Criterion, but I'll bold what's left to be released.

Round Midnight
The Roaring Twenties
The Philadelphia Story
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
O Lucky Man
Lone Star
Hedwig & The Angry Inch
Captain Blood
Bringing Up Baby
Arsenic and Old Lace

also...

Mean Streets
Barry Lyndon

The fact that these were listed as OOP in the same time as some of the titles licensed to CC, led me to believe that, perhaps, I'm on something here, and that this is not merely a coincidence. We shall see...
Scarmouche, Gummo, and I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang have also been heavily rumored due to the old Criterion site having blank pages for their respective directors.
