Are you sure you're Gen X? Anyone I know would be so humiliated to have misspelled Kurosawa in their name that they would have immediately started a new account. Maybe there's an Arnie Kurasawa out there?

That moth actually has a lasting legacy that they can’t digitally erase. 4 years later, in 1947, he unfortunately became stuck on a relay in Grace Hopper’s computer and caused it to malfunction. The logbook stated "First actual case of bug being found." Hopper (and crew) is credited with popularizing the terms "debugging" and "computer bug" which are still in our vernacular 70+ years later.

Grace would have a lengthy career in the U.S. Navy, ascending to Rear Admiral. She is widely celebrated as a computing pioneer. The moth’s remains are on displayed along with that day’s logbook at the Smithsonian for anyone wanting to pay their respects:

Hopeful future releases:

Intacto (director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo)

El Espíritu de la Colmena (director Víctor Erice)

Any Terrence Malick film in 4k (except Song to Song- 4k version released already)

Los Locos (director Jean Marc-Vallée). I see Arrow video picking this one up.

Waking Life (director Richard Linklater)

La Chute de la Maison Usher (director Jean Epstein)

I’ll take a 3 Films by Glazer UHD box set.
I’m fine buying Zone of Interest separately

I need a Birth release on Blu immediately! I’d take a 4K too!

Also, isn’t there an issue with the Sexy Beasts Blu being in the wrong aspect ratio?

I know the Twilight Time had two aspect ratios available in the disc, but i think 2:35:1 is the original theatrical ratio

I’m hoping Zone of Interest leads to a Birth Bluray

Just watched the late great William Friedkin's Criterion Closet video for the first time, and it instantly became my new favorite closet vid. Most of it is just him slowly perusing the shelves, pausing occasionally to mention an anecdote or two.. It's such a contrast from the mad-dash speedrun nature that other videos have.

No doubt it's already been discussed, but with the recent-ish news that many Ozu films have been restored, can we hope for a criterion boxset of his works in the near future?

Of course we can hope. But we have to admit, all we can get about that subject right now is just the same old wishful thinking and nothing definite. No clue, no hint, no insider leak, nothing.

I feel like this is a good sign that Criterion has Godard's Contempt Posted on their social media a few hours ago. I know they have posted a few other titles that were never released by them but it seems to good of a time to upload a screenshot for it. We'll probably find out if they have it by 8/15

I've long considered this to be one of the mysteries of the blu-ray world - with the considerable interest in Borzage from many of the boutique labels (especially Criterion and Kino but a few others as well), why don't we have the three films (Seventh Heaven, Street Angel, and Lucky Star) that largely jump-started his career to first-tier status? I would have thought that Kino, Criterion, and perhaps even Twilight Time would have been fighting one another to get the rights when Fox was still licensing its catalog. Heck, you would think that Martin Scorsese would have prodded Criterion some given his acknowledged love for these films. I guess its still possible that Criterion could have licensed the films some time ago and has just been sitting on them for all of these years (a la Erich von Stroheim's The Wedding March).

Incidentally, this is why I've been very curious about the "behind the scenes" negotiations that Bob Harris had to have done for The Johnstown Flood. The underlying print material is from the 1960s Fox donation to the George Eastman House so I would presume that Disney would have some donor restrictions. If so, how did Harris get Disney's ok to access the material? I know that there is a somewhat recent 4K restoration on Seventh Heaven, and it would be nice to see that at some point.

After this post (even though it will never happen), I'm trying to picture how Criterion would curate an Arnold/Kurosawa box set.

This might be of interest for others who are excited about the upcoming Tod Browning collection.

I just received the latest newsletter from Centipede Press, and their revised and updated reprint of David J. Skal's book on Browning, Dark Carnival should be ready for October:

Quote:
Our fine expanded edition of Skal’s book on Tod Browning is scheduled to print soon. This is an oversize book filled with photographs and color. It is signed by David J. Skal and limited to 500 signed copies. Hopefully done by October, it will have a list price of about $175.
The high price of course reflects that Centipede Press is a small specialty press, doing very high quality, beautifully bound limited editions of both classic genre literature and film books. According to Skal, this edition will be updated and have a lot of new photos in high quality prints.

David J. Skal also posted on SoMe recently that there will be a much cheaper paperback edition (with less photos) coming later from one of the university presses.

Of course, Skal is also heavily featured in the extras on Criterion's upcoming Tod Browning set.

Here's my November predictions. Some are just hopes/wishes, than anything confirmed to be happening. I've had mostly swings and misses lately, so expect none of these to be correct

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio 4K
Ozu's The Noriko Trilogy 4K (Late Spring / Early Summer / Tokyo Story) (I'd settle for just one Ozu 4K upgrade )
Peeping Tom 4K (going between this and Contempt 4K)
Chungking Express 4K
Saint Omer
