I agree. This was a blind buy for me during the recent sale.

2024 is also the 110th anniversary of Chaplin's debut in cinema (all his Keystone films were released in 1914), so a good time as any to finally get the rest of his work on Blu-ray. There's also the remaining First National films like The Pilgrim, Shoulder Arms, and A Dog's Life, plus A King in New York. Universal apparently has a newer 4K DCP of A Countess from Hong Kong (which wouldn't be a bad bonus feature to pair with A Woman of Paris as they're the only two Chaplin films he doesn't star in).

I enjoyed Cure even more the second time around. I watched it for the first time last Halloween and it stayed with me, so I revisited it this Halloween. It's a new favorite of mine. I also watched and enjoyed Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Pulse for the first time this year.

There are six 1426x1080 size jpg stills on the page. They are not on-set stills but screenshots from the actual film, and they look nothing like the sepia-tinted one Eureka used recently. In fact, they look very similar to the previous master Criterion used for their 2006 DVD, just with better resolution. Maybe Criterion decided to go back and reuse that because of the "missing coin" issue of the recent restoration, as they did with Le Samouraï upgrade when the newer Gaumont restoration turned out to be problematic. I wouldn't mind if that's the case, and those "stills" look good enough for me.

That is very much a possibility! Mostly because a 2K digital version of the Filmmuseum München's 1997 restoration (The one Criterion used) exists. Seeing how on the Criterion page for the DVD it states, "New, restored high-definition digital transfer of the definitive Munich Film Museum restoration".

Some of us just finished our Barnes & Noble Criterion sale hauls... and now Criterion itself is having a 30% off sale through Dec. 22. Channel subscribers should have received an additional $10 off in an email.

Thank goodness you mentioned that. I was clearing out my inbox and had deleted that email thinking it was just promoting the sale .

Interestingly I am not a Channel subscriber and still received a $10 off coupon as well - thanks Criterion!

Yeah, I got the coupon as well despite not being a subscriber. I think it’s for everyone who’s bought from the website and/or has a website account.

When do loyalty points hit? When you place the order or when it ships? I was 3 away from a certificate before I just ordered Roaring Twenties, and I'm still 3 away.

I did not receive a coupon. Not a subscriber, have an account... did not purchase anything from there in 2023:

Interesting, I hadn't realized Criterion sent the coupons to non-subscribers as well. That's great. The wording in the email I received: "As a valued subscriber to the Criterion Channel, we're gifting you $10 to use..." etc.

I used the Criterion sale code today to order the 4K UHD set of Days of Heaven.

I hope that everyone is having a safe and happy holiday season.

I believe the points kick in at shipping time.

I got "As a valued customer...", so that probably just means I spend too much money on their website lol

I forgot the free shipping threshold is $75…kinda negates the 30% off plus $10 savings over just waiting for a 50% off sale. I’ll keep looking to see if there’s a combo that makes sense savings-wise.

I got it too, which was a nice surprise (not a subscriber). Will this coupon be good for their next flash sale?
