I would like to see any of the following in 2024 from Criterion:
  • Scorsese's New York, New York (1977): I would love to see this receive a new scan (perhaps a UHD?) and get the deluxe Criterion treatment similar to the other Criterion Scorsese releases.
  • Scorsese's early films that are still unreleased (Who's That Knocking at My Door?, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore) - and Boxcar Bertha also needs a new scan.
  • Scorsese's Bringing Out the Dead (1999)
  • UHD releases of Hitchcock's Selznick International films (Rebecca, Notorious, Spellbound)
  • UHD releases of Hitchcock's Warner films (WAC won't do UHDs)
  • Proper HD releases of Hitchcock's unreleased (in the US) British films

For 2024 I'm almost positive we'll finally get Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Long overdue.

I'm hoping for October we either get a boxset of all the horror Ishiro Honda films like Matango. Or, a HK horror boxset with the Mr. Vampire Films, Close Encounters of the Spooky Kind, and Riki-Oh. Or even just Demon Pond.

As for the year itself, Bringing Out the Dead would be great, but I think Arrow has that. Please, just some new to HD Japanese films. Samurai Rebellion and Hunter and the Dark would be on the top of my list.

Sure, it's possible (unless you're referring to the original 8-10 hour version, which is lost). George Feltenstein of Warner Archives has expressed in recent years that they are looking into releasing it on Blu-ray. I believe the likeliest version would be the one released in theaters at 2 hr. 20 min. The 4-hour reconstructed version from 1999 was created in standard definition, so that would have to be redone in order to release it on Blu-ray.

The Devils is back on the Criterion Channel this month. Maybe something's in the works.

I really enjoyed the reconstructed version of GREED and wouldn't want to go back to the truncated one. With the improved technology now they could probably do an even better job of recreating the jist of the missing stuff. Who knows, if A.I. continues at its current pace, maybe they can even recreate the actual scenes with the original actors! I would especially like to see a version of AMBERSONS done that way.

Either Lionsgate is relisting/reissuing everything or another studio has access to the film. Something smells fishy though.
Lionsgate is undergoing some changes with the eOne acquisition (from Hasbro) and spinning off Starz. Could be Shout Studios like with Halloween. Though more Coppola restorations still coming out like One from the Heart.

Another 4K restoration of Rebecca is premiering, same with Spellbound.

The 4k of Apocalypse Now was already super stacked and I only paid $11 for it. Hard to imagine what a boutique label could do to make it worth a premium price. It's more likely some type of rights issue.

I'm very curious to watch the GREED reconstruction, and it would be ideal to have both it and the theatrical version on disc. However, given how WAC releases tend to pretty bare-bones and based on George F.'s comments about the reconstruction needing to be redone if being brought to HD, I wonder how feasible that would be. The fact that GREED has never even seen an official DVD release leads me to think that the economics don't really work out for a lavish edition from WAC. Ideally, this should get a stacked release by the likes of Criterion.

I'm looking forward to the reconstruction being done for AMBERSONS, using sketched animation, original score, and voice actors to fill in the missing material (based on the cutting continuity and photo stills). It's not the same thing as using AI to recreate it to look like film with the original actors, but I've been impressed from the samples I've seen.

And now it seems that the physical 4K is no longer available for purchase from any of the big retailers. For the time being, there is still a page on the Lionsgate site for the film although, as you have mentioned, there are no options to buy this on streaming. This, among many other movies that have gone through a situation like this before, is why physical media is good for people who want to own movies like us!

Either Lionsgate is relisting/reissuing everything or another studio has access to the film. Something smells fishy though.
I have a strong feeling Lionsgate will still have it. This is one of the biggest titles that they own from StudioCanal's library. But someone has mentioned that Lionsgate is going through a deal right now so I have no idea if they still own it.

If they did lose it, however, the only other companies that could release it would probably be either Kino Lorber or Criterion as you mentioned since this is a Rialto Pictures title. This film arguably feels fitting as a Lionsgate title more than the other two labels IMO.

Either way, 45th anniversary is coming up soon so a re-release is definitely happening though I argue there's no need to buy another copy if you have the older release. The only improvement would have to be adding the 5.1 mixes to the 4K discs (Which aren't the original mix but supposed to be a replication/recreation of it apparently) like the German release did.

(On a side note, I know this title went OOP around September-October. I was fortunate enough to buy a copy of the 4K on eBay before the prices spiked up after Thanksgiving when word probably got around about its status).

Have you seen film archivist Bob Furmanek's color comparisons between the original film and Criterion's Blu? It's obvious the color is different and not what the director intended. It's a screw up.

If you give me a proper reference/link to this comparison and an explanation why this person is uniquely qualified to comment on the color timing - more so than the people at Fox who restored the DeLuxe colors - then I'm happy to take a look.

So far, I've mainly read random forum posters screaming "teal" (which it isn't), or "too blue", or "too dark" and I don't think this counts as any evidence for a screw-up. Neither do comparisons to old home video releases.

And neither do threads from Home Theater Forum, where the guy you mention seemed to have made one or two posts on this film. And no, comparing an image of a vinyl record against the filmed vinyl record carries absolutely zero evidence. Color timed print film will not look like the "real thing", and neither should it.

The post regarding the color differences was made on this site, not on the execrable HTF, but I'm not searching it out because really I don't give a shit what you think or care about trying to change your mind or sway you one way or the other. There are better things to do, especially with your unnecessary combative tone, which will only yield the same from me.

If you don't know Bob Furmanek's credentials, find them on your own and then doubt them if you want, not before.

In other words, before going on the attack, make an effort to investigate the issues rather than just jumping at someone at making it incumbent upon them to squash your self-imposed doubts.

The way AI is evolving I'm expecting this sooner rather than later. Pump in every film Welles directed for reference, the cut footage in the trailer, stills, any surviving frame enlargements (some from the original ending went missing in the 70s), Herrmann's complete score, shooting continuity and script and everything that Welles shot for Ambersons and BAM! God only knows...

I was wondering about Criterion updating subtitles between different releases of the same title. Originally I was wondering if they updated them from the original dvd release of The Seventh Seal and the new 4k/blu.

Then I started wondering if Criterion updated the subtitles on every release they update or only select ones. I specifically got interested in the updates to Branded to Kill, Onibaba, and Sword of Doom. I assume releases such as Eyes Without a Face kept the same subtitles due to the exact same artwork.

Lionsgate could be dealing with their eOne acquisition or there’s a chance they might’ve lost the rights. This is owned by American Zoetrope who also co-owns The Conversation with Paramount, The Outsiders with Warner, Tucker, One from the Heart, The Cotton Club, (formerly with MGM) Tetro and Twixt at the top of my head. Maybe Lionsgate’s deal with Zoetrope is expiring for all I know. American Zoetrope still has StudioCanal handling international distribution, I don’t know if Lionsgate will port over the new remaster of One from the Heart in North America.

With that being said, a Criterion of The Conversation would be fire!

Scorsese's Bringing Out The Dead and E. Elias Merhige's Shadow Of The Vampire are the two UHDs other than the Lynch films that I want on UHD in 2024.

We did just get a more reconstructed version of The Unknown. I’d like to see the reconstruction of The Big Red One finished in HD. Also with Fox for The River.

I always thought that if Criterion were to ever issue "Mean Streets", that "Who's That Knocking at My Door?" would have been a supplement on it. Just like "Killer's Kiss" being a Supplement on "The Killing", by Kubrick.

But alas, that didn't happen.

So, I suppose that Criterion perhaps considers "Who's That Knocking at My Door?" worthy of its own, standalone release, which is also fine by me.

I do hope we finally can get the remaining three Scorsese features on HD this year.

I've heard rumors that "Bringing Out the Dead" is with Arrow. When they released "Hugo" last summer, several people said it was teased that Arrow also had "Bringing Out the Dead". If so, get to it, guys!

And if Criterion has "Knocking" and "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore", I hope they release those soon.

Oh, and "Killers of the Flower Moon", too!
