Does Sony still have it? Last theatrical rerelease I saw was credited to Mercury Studios.

I think Picnic at Hanging Rock will be announced for 4K. I noticed Criterion has switched out the screenshots they had with shots with new color grading that was supervised by Peter Weir.

About The Tree of Life, a quick question for those who would be kind enough to offer an opinion, do you recommend the extended version on the Criterion edition?

That new Picnic Rock grade is baaad. From the Soderbergh school of making things piss yellow for some reason.

I’ve never seen the theatrical because in 2011 I didn’t like Malick very much. As I’ve grown older and my tastes have changed, I’ve grown to adore this film. (Some of his films are crap) This film however, is an odyssey into a scenic cinema bliss. So I would watch the extended cut. Sometimes more isn’t always better, but I imagine the shorter version would rob you of some of the magic trance this film puts you in.

Altered States had a surprisingly strong Blu-ray in 2012, and it remains strong in 2024. That being said, a 4K and Blu-ray wouldn’t hurt. While it’s not exactly the Ken Russel film we’re really waiting for, I still think a 4K of Altered States would rock.

Keep in mind though, the original reviewer stated that the very dark Blu-ray was nearly identical to the theatrical prints, and everyone else complained it was crushed to shit.

Yeah, but Universal Spain releases some real budget releases like this, or To Each His Own (which I'm grateful for since it's an all-time favorite of mine) whose masters are old and certainly not up to par with Criterion's (or any US boutique label's) standards.

Maybe Criterion would include the novel again with Picnic at Hanging Rock. I own the first printing, but I believe the 2nd print (non-dual pack) does not include the novel.

Thanks for those Picnic at Hanging Rock caps. Really just prefer the old version by a mile, even if they did a 4K I don't think I would upgrade.

A Criterion Picnic at Hanging Rock would be perfect for me. I have the Second Sight blu-ray. We'd probably lose out on the extra cut but I'd love to have the Criterion extras.

What's the deal with Picnic being so yellow, is it supposed to be that way? Not one I would need on 4k if it looks like that...

There's an extensive restoration seminar that was done in 2022. Peter Weir was apparently unhappy with the previous color grade (despite supervising that transfer), and they apparently used reference prints for this new color grading. From what I've read, the film looked closer to the existing Criterion Blu-ray when it was screened theatrically, but I personally don't know if that's true or not.

A lot of people with the Second Sight release are very happy with the new grading, and with some saying it's the best the film ever looked. I'm a bit torn on it personally. I kind of like the new grading, as I feel it fits the tone of the movie. Even the cover art/posters for the film over the years had that same brown/sepia look to them. At the same time, I'm just not big on revisionism (if that is indeed the case here), and would prefer the original presentation, or ideally provide both presentations. The bigger issue for many was the filtering/fake grain that seems to have been applied to the restoration.

I'm just hoping for something new to HD that's Japanese. Not a 4K upgrade, but something that didn't even have a Blu-ray.

You're a funny guy.

You'll get 2 4K upgrades that were put out on blu <5 years ago, a "classic holywood" title, and a title from a movie made by a farmer in a small mountain village that they produced for 5 blueberries and a goat.

That's about all I expect anymore. I'm pretty tired of all the 4K upgrades of late.
