I'm confident that Classe Tous Risques will get an upgrade. Criterion has been doing a lot of upgrades lately so it wouldn't be unexpected to see this one.

And also a Teshigahara re-release of the set would be nice, although some - including I - have already caved in and bought Woman in the Dunes Blu-ray on their own. I'm a bit lost as to why the other two have never been re-released on HD (And speaking of that, Eureka hasn't done it either). Those two, especially The Face of Another, are super popular with the arthouse fans in the last few years.

And also Demon Pond sounds very interesting to me so I would love to see a release of that just out of curiosity (I don't have the Criterion Channel anymore). Love seeing weird stuff like this as always

I don't remember it very well, but I watched Fires on the Plain right after it, and was floored, so it kind of overshadowed Burmese Harp. I remember it having a hopeful look at the brutality of war while Fires on the Plain was a much more nihilistic look at war. Kon Ichikawa seemed to want to show the duality of war in these films, and for the most part he succeeded.
I see! Well, it should be quite a surprise then! Hopefully Criterion (or anyone) releases the 4K restoration on BD sooner rather than later. I am curious if Kadokawa-Daiei has any interest in restoring Fires on the Plain (1959) anytime soon. Thank you for the response!

Also, hopefully we'll see Demon Pond (1979) released soon as well, seems like quite the interesting 1970s film from Shochiku!

And I look forward to hearing about the updates regarding the Pandora's Box (1929) screenings, especially in regards to how the film looks in comparison to the flawed presentation. So far, things look promising.

A 4K release of Satantango with decent encoding (on three discs or more) would easily be my favorite physical release of all time if it were to ever happen. But it is insanely unlikely unfortunately.

The encoding would be top notch if Arbelos did it, since their prior release was encoded by Fidelity in Motion.

I’ve always wondered this, does Criterion have a contract with anyone to do their encoding, or do they do it in-house? I might’ve heard one or two of their discs had encodes by FIM, but I don’t know if it’s all of their releases. I really don’t think that it is all of them.

While FIM is the best studio around when it comes to encodes and compression, they’re likely also very expensive if not the most expensive studio around considering their quality and their reputation.

I once programmed a film festival of double features with 50's New York City films and then 70's because of the great deterioration that happened there in two decades. It drew a lot of audiences and was very successful.
Oh yeah, Pelham may be the best depiction in film of 1970s NYC (the mayor looks like Ed Koch but I think Lindsay was mayor when it was made, so it was unfair to Lindsay who did what he could in a bad situation).

A few others from different eras:

There's certainly a lot more fascination in NYC as urban hellscape than its modern incarnation as Disneyland.

When I try to think of a definitive film that captures Joisey, all that comes to mind is this:

As far as I know, FiM have never done a Criterion encode; they seem exclusively to use an outfit in LA which suspiciously has several trendy sounding names - Pixelogic, Radius60, etc. My suspicion is that Criterion use them because their names sound cool in a coffee table context.

I was being tongue in cheek; however, I remember when HD-DVD was slugging it out with Blu-ray. I always believed the latter would win because it has a better name

I'm guessing that since they still haven't announced a bluray themselves and it's getting such a big awards push, we'll probably see Neon sending Anatomy of a Fall straight to Criterion like they did Triangle of Sadness?

Yeah, to me it totally sums up that era in NYC because every single character in the movie is angry. I can't think of another movie that has as many grumpy people in it than the original PELHAM.

Curious if there’s information out there about possible rereleases of Criterion box sets—specifically the Three Colors Trilogy, Guillermo Del Toro Trilogy, and The World Of Wong Kar Wei.

  • Three Colors is available now
  • The World of Wong Kar-wai - should be re-stocked at some point it's not OOP as far as I know.
  • Del Toro Trilogy won't come back into print.

I have the BFI Blu-ray which had the excellent Lino Ventura featurette, so it will need to be 4K for me to double-dip.

The warehouses and piers are long gone, made obsolete by container ships, but a lot of the street scenes are recognizable Hoboken locations. If you made a film based in Hoboken now, it would be something like American Psycho.
