I think my most wanted upgrades to Blu-ray and 4K are Grand Illusion, The King Of Kings, Pandora’s Box, The Threepenny Opera, Armageddon, and The Unbearable Lightness Of Being.

Also, when Ambersons inevitably hits 4K, I really hope Criterion carries over everything from the laserdisc to the 4K. It literally had the script for the original cut and tons of stuff related to the original cut, most of which wasn’t present on the Blu-ray from several years back.

Just picked this up on 4K, but haven't had the chance to watch. Have never seen, but I'm a big Peter Weir fan.

I also wonder what's up with Z not getting a re-release. It is a title that they have on streaming but I guess they haven't been able to get rights for home video? It also has a 2K restoration that has been screened a few times.

I feel like The Last Wave is the most likely, considering that Umbrella is doing a 4K UHD of it. On a different note, they also did a 4K restoration release for In the Realm of the Senses and Empire of Passion (In one 50GB disc, unfortunately).

Can't say how much I love The Ruling Class. Very witty and absurd comedy. The runtime is very intimidating and the film may be too exhausting for some, but I think there's more pros than cons for this film. Also it has one of Peter O'Toole's finest performances outside of Lawrence of Arabia (
[Show spoiler]His scream at the end of the film is one of the greatest EVER
).

Criterion's DVD of Z went OOP in 2018, the same year that another Costa Gavras film, The Confession, suddenly went OOP. Not sure what happened there, but I'm not optimistic about it ever coming out.

Hmm. They still have streaming rights? If not, I'm surprised another label hasn't gone for it yet.

Streaming rights and home video rights are different. They have streaming rights to lots of different movies that aren't on disc. If it shows up on the Criterion Channel, that DOESN'T automatically mean its getting a Criterion disc.

Lumumba: Death of a Prophet (Lumumba, la mort d'un prophète) (1991) - If not a solo release, then it likely will be included in the next WCP volume.

It would make sense to be in a WCP set, but I would hope Criterion also gets the rights to Raoul Peck's biographical film about Lumumba and do a double feature release.

My newest wish list:

Catch-22
Carnal Knowledge
Paper Moon
Jean Eustache set
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (would like Who's That Knocking at My Door?, too)
More Bertolucci!!!
Killers of the Flower Moon
More Oshima (Boy, Cruel Story of Youth, Empire of Passion upgrade, etc.)
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Drugstore Cowboy
Shinoda (Silence, Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees, Demon Pond, etc.)
The Devils (I know, I know, but I never give up on it).

On a seperate note, I was very happy to see a pre-order for a Milestone release in April of Nancy Savoca's "Household Saints", with Lili Taylor, the same month as Criterion releasing, "Dogfight"! EDIT: AND, now I see KL releasing "True Love" at the same time as "Saints"! Plus, the "Saints" release contains her two early short films. It's gonna be a Nancy Savoca festival for me in early May!

Aside from That Hamilton Woman and Trouble in Paradise, I'd love to see The King of Kings get an upgrade.

Though the information included in the booklet about the technicolor segments don't inspire hope: "The newly created 35mm internagtive from UCLA's original two strip Technicolor nitrate print is the best surviving material for the color sequences, but despite digital restoration, severe fading and color imbalance remain. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, and scratches were removed using the MTI Digital Restoration System."

Also want it upgraded because the DVD case is so bulky and takes up a lot of room.

I need to keep a running list of all the films I want Criterion to release.

I definitely will echo Carnal Knowledge, Catch-22, The Unbearable Lightness of Being (maybe Henry & June too?), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (Bringing Out the Dead too!) Jean Eustache boxset!

Also throw out wanting Raise the Red Lantern, Edward Yang boxset, Pablo Larraín's El Conde, and more Costa-Gavras!!

I have a feeling that a Criterion release of El Conde is a lock, maybe even this month.

I think that one is possible, though maybe from Flicker Alley or Kino Lorber as they've worked with Lobster Films who released a now OOP Blu of it in France which I am kicking myself for not getting. I agree that it's another title I like to see upgraded from, but have little belief Criterion will get it done.

Has there ever been a case where a film that is currently streaming on the CC channel that opens with the CC logo that got a release from another label?

I don’t know I don’t keep a spreadsheet or anything. I can barely remember the movies I want to get a Blu-Ray release. That’s a question for someone else. But I’m sure there have been times where they released a movie lost the rights, someone else released a Blu but the streaming copy still features the logo. But I don’t know for sure, I’m just a Caveman Lawyer.

This is what I'm curious about. I could be wrong, but I don't think there has ever been something that's streaming on the Criterion Channel that opens with the Criterion logo get a release by another label. I'm pretty sure Criterion always gets both the physical and streaming rights at the same time, as there are nearly a thousand films that open with the Criterion logo on the channel that don't have a Blu-ray from anyone. If Criterion had only the streaming rights you would think at least ONE of those thousand films would have been picked up by another label.
