Seconding what koberulz replied. The existing studio UHD's have top-marks for AV presentation and contain 90+min of bonus material, so no, it definitely is not overdue for a new release by Criterion, and unless the director makes some kind of personal intervention (like Andrew Stanton did for Wall-E), there's no reason for the studio to license home video rights to Criterion.

The films I mentioned, they the rights to all of them. I’d say, send them as email! Haha, every little bit helps.

"The Man Who Stole the Sun" (1979) is another one I've been waiting for. It seems that it was never released on blu-ray anywhere in the world though? Very odd, Toho owns the right (if I'm not mistaken) and one would imagine that they would release it at least on Japan.

As far as Japanese films go, I'd love more US stateside releases of Shohei Imamura. I have the Eureka box, as well as Criterion's releases and that Arrow box. But I'd love to see Criterion upgrade a couple of their exisiting Imamura releases, and add a couple more.

I'd love a career spanning set of Nagisa Oshima.

Same for Masahiro Shinoda.

Can always use more Kurosawa.

We need a watchable copy of The Eel. Can't believe Artificial Eye released it a few years ago in the UK on a non-anamorphic DVD.

Yes, they were [interested], and that was the biggest punch in the arm! Then it went to how do we make this worthy? Because, we were such fans of Criterion, but Pixar already did all the backstory things. We were like, is there something else to say about this? Some of it benefited from time passing and being able to look back at it. But another was being able to humanize it as all our films come from a singular filmmaker, who has very specific influences as to why they express themselves the way they do, and what they were trying to do with that film. And because [WALL-E] had such cinema roots both in tone and source, I just felt like that was something that most of the people that were buying the earlier Disney DVDs weren't interested in. That [release] was being used like a babysitter half the time. [Laughs.] And so I said, now maybe the crowd that I'd love to speak to with this film is going to be the audience for this DVD.

Not certain if this will be an immediate release from Criterion, or not, but I saw elsewhere that Universal has just completed a new 4K restoration of Mitchell Leisen's Midnight (1939), which IIRC Criterion was rumored to or said to have under license.

It’s criminal to me that Ceylan’s newest opus flew that much under the radar during the awards season. It’s even more staggering when considering how long the film was in post-production and how massive it turned out. Memento Films in France co-funded the film and they inexplicably only release it on DVD. Komplizen Film in Germany, which is co-run by director Maren Ade, also contributed funding and no mention of the film over here at all. Truly terrible.

I dislike Criterion’s current philosophy towards their physical releases, including the Janus Contemporaries line, which carries on their unfortunate trend of slimming down their releases further and further as well but when looking at the rest of the world, I think we’re going to be happy that the film sees one semi-major BD release at all, let alone with English subtitles. As much as the current physical media climate excites me, the treatment of some (in my opinion) major filmmakers with actual international appeal is deeply disappointing.

Janus Contemporaries are $15 bucks four times per year. I'll take a barebones release of a arthouse cinema over a 55 dollar stacked version of Jess Franco's Count Dracula.

I may get some flack for this, but honestly I feel if Warner Bros. can't do it themselves, Criterion should release the 4K of Gone With the Wind if that were to happen (especially this year)

I know, it's controversial now, but I think it would make for a great opportunity for Criterion to challenge their usual consumer base and let viewers decide for themselves
