I finally watched the trailer for it.
From that it seems like Bloom's character will have more substance, or at least an arc, than I was expecting. There is still a schmaltz factor that I'm dreading. However that Keaton/Chaplin aspect is definitely something high up in the "pro" column for me.
I'm still 50/50 on this one. It's very likely I'll kick it down the road again to the October sale.

I have a $50 coupon I can use, but my original plan was to save it for a future sale and go light on this one.

Now, as crunch time gets near, I'm leaning in the opposite direction- big order and use the coupon.

I need to work up my grocery budget for the week today. If I can pare that down enough, I may be able to rationalize a larger order.

  • Days of Heaven (1978) UHD
But the reports of shonky encoding on the first two and the subtitle problem on the Rohmer has put a spanner in the works

Also, now that Criterion are releasing UHDs in the UK, what to import and what not has become a bit of a minefield.
Your post is a bit confusing. What’s wrong with DAYS OF HEAVEN? That’s number three on your list and you said the first two are bad and the Rohmer subs problematic? So no issues with DAYS?

Err… no. I’ll definitely be picking that up. And no doubt Rohmer too - I need to have a working copy of Conte d’Ete!

I don't have the best experiences with Barnes, though.

None of them ship abroad anymore (Barnes use to do it). Since I have to go through a middle-man, instead of being able to pick them up myself in a store, I prefer to go through a place that offers easy exchange or good customer service.

Last I ordered from Barnes (and that is years ago, when they still shipped abroad), several of the Criterions I received had very obviously been returned and re-packaged with new shrink wrap.

So, since Amazon usually price matches Barnes, I tend to go that route for anything in standard cases. The good thing about Amazon is, of course, how easy it is to get problematic discs replaced. That bad is that their packaging in my experience is a lottery. I never use them for box sets or digipaks anymore.

... which is why I want to try and order those from Criterion instead. I don't know how their packaging is? From previous experience and from what I have read, they tend to be rather good, though, if something should arrive damaged or scratched.

Similar to you I used to use B&N during their sales; I decided to stop using them when they blocked EU customers. A reshipper is not attractive for the reason that B&N often ship items separately, which pushes up the costs.

Criterion packaging every time I've used them is always a box with air pillows. Haven't had any damaged items from them.

Oh, that is very good to know. Thank you very much!

I think I'll place a order for some of those digipaks I have been a bit hesitant to order then - Citizen Kane, Lost Highway, the Karel Zeman collection etc.

This thing is beyond fragile. I've seen these in B&N with the spine crushed, which probably means none of the pop-up parts worked. Criterion is the only place I'd trust to ship this to you overseas.

For better or worse, the box with some air pillows is what you're always going to get. It's great for "regular" size shipments, it's a little obscene for something like the Bergman box (which I know I complained about the way it was shipped several years back when I received it). That doesn't mean their customer service sucked; it was perfect in fact!

Criterion just wrote back regarding the missing subtitles on the Eric Rohmer set:
Quote:
Thank you for writing to us, though I'm sorry you've encountered this error on your ERIC ROHMER’S TALES OF THE FOUR SEASONS Blu-ray set. I'm happy to help you on behalf of Jon.

We've investigated this on our end and can confirm that the initial pressing of the ERIC ROHMER’S TALES OF THE FOUR SEASONS Blu-ray set is missing subtitles on the A TALE OF SUMMER Making Of Documentary supplement starting around the 1 hour mark.

Corrected discs are being made now and we would be happy to provide you with a replacement for your A TALE OF SUMMER Blu-ray once available. Please hold on to your copy for the time being and we will be in touch with an update regarding next steps as soon as the replacements are ready to ship out.

We hope you enjoy the rest of the content in this set in the meantime and appreciate your patience as we work on a resolution. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Going through the Hal Hartley movies on CC as they are mostly leaving at the end of the month, and I’m watching my Henry Fool DVD and kind of surprised Criterion never gave this one the boost. Feels the most natural Hartley film for a disc from them!

Yeah, I wouldn’t recommend ordering it with the Bergman set. Made that mistake with True Stories. RIP True Stories

It’s a trilogy; wouldn’t that be a great set? I would be thrilled if they did any Hartley. He’s a master artist.

Hartley self put out a bunch of collections, including the Henry Fool set, but they seem long OOP on his website (and also were quite pricy!)

I have every Blu-ray he’s put out, mostly Kickstarter projects. I want whatever will bring more eyes to his work because it speaks for itself. He’s a once in a generation talent.

I hope you honored the Bergman set by putting it on a 7-pound load-bearing shelf with another box set. That shelf will give you a McDonald's smile for the rest of your life.

I now have so many codes, I may have to get one extra disc than planned in order to actually meet the point threshold for the next $50 gift card.

Woe is me.

I;m less than 40 away from the cert so I'll do 2 orders this sale. I forgot I was so close at the end of last sale though.

They're usually so quick getting the certs out I figure I can get my first order in immediately, reload the cart from teh wishlist, grab the Cert Email and MAYBE I can get the 2nd checkout before the site either crashes or grinds to a halt. Otherwise just wait a couple hrs.
