At this point, I'd be very obliging if Criterion decided to switch to a costlier but more reliable pressing plant even if it meant having to substantially scale down their 4K program(focusing only on heavy hitters for the 4K format like Citizen Kane, Mulholland Drive, Raging Bull et al. even if it means having to discontinue more niche releases like The Ranown Westerns to keep costs down) to maintain the current pricing structure.

I'm dreading having the Criterion 4K as the only option for some strongly possible forthcoming 4Ks like 8 1/2 and the like.

This is a nauseating take. If you aren't working for a boutique, I can't imagine how you got their boot so far into your mouth.

Might try to see that trilogy at MOMA on the 30th.

Yeah, I just added a few to the Japanese thread. The ones on the pages are crpped, but you can download very high-res higher versions from the zip files they provide.

The only theater-released Amazon MGM movie that's gotten a release since Air is The Beekeeper...nothing for Bottoms, Saltburn, Boys in the Boat, Foe, etc.

Saltburn seems like a Criterion film. You have to give it a few years, but they’ll definitely release it. It was shot on film and had a 4K DI, so we may even get a UHD out of it too.

I’m not so sure about that as the film’s more acknowledged in the public and critical eye as a shallow, surface-level can of soda unlike Triangle of Sadness in which many found more substance, critics and audiences alike. The latter also got a Palme d’Or and considerable "arthouse" exposure, which makes it a perfect fit for Criterion’s philosophy in 2023 or 24. Saltburn definitely is a Shout title, as is Bones and All. I sincerely hope both of these (and Licorice Pizza) will be licensed to Shout. I also don’t see Maestro getting a Criterion release for example.

Film Forum has their April to June schedule (PDF) up, and there's a few notable titles for Janus/Criterion. I mentioned this earlier, but they'll be showing the 4K restoration of Le Samourai in April. In addition to that, they'll be showing several other Alain Delon films including Purple Noon, La Piscine, The Leopard, Mr. Klein, L’eclisse, And Red Sun. They'll also be having a 1980's program with over 40 films, which will include titles like Blue Velvet, and Brazil, both of which I expect will see 4K releases sooner than later.

Most exciting as far as new stuff is the confirmation that Janus/Criterion have Vittorio De Sica's Shoeshine (1946)! It's also sourced from a new 4K restoration from the Film Foundation. They'll also be showing the 4K restoration of Powell and Pressburger's The Small Back Room (1949), which is listed as OOP on Criterion's site, but I have a feeling they got it back.

I can't believe The Small Back Room would get a BD or even UHD before I Know Where I'm Going or 49th Parallel.

But then, Dr Terror's House of Horrors gets 4K before any Hammer films, so who knows in this crazy business.

I don’t ask for a replacement unless the disc has playback issues. It’s a waste of everyone’s time and money when the “damage” is superficial.

Been waiting forever to see Ken released (along with many other Mishima-related films,) and I’ll gladly purchase the other two.

Hopefully a physical release to follow soon!! Always baffled me how Criterion never even released it on DVD. Rights issues I guess

Well that and there's no guarantee that the replacement(s) won't have scratches on them too.

Edit: Though I will take your word that Criterion supposedly checks the replacements for scratches before sending them out.

Pretty sure that refers to when the US plant shut down and Mexico became the only (nearby) remaining option…

In reality, Criterion really should consider having their manufacturing done in Europe since things don't seem to be changing in Mexico. At least Europe still has a clue. A quality label should be offering quality product…

Since I got going with a couple posts earlier, figured I'd finally crack open my flash sale orders. For what it's worth, I ordered 13 items, in 3 seperate orders.

I'm keeping 5 of them (which were all in plastic cases), as they looked fine enough. All their discs looked fine too, with the exception of one likely negligible scratch on Executioners (I opted for the blu-ray version of that set). Even the booklets were in good shape (not really a deciding factor for me these days).

All the 4 cardboard ones had various degrees of corner dents, many of their corners severely dented. If I wasn't such a stickler, I might have kept one, possibly two, of them, but that ain't me and given I'm sending the other ones back anyway, they're going back too. So these are maybe all shipping failures, nothing to do with the manufacturer (no idea what their discs look like, so could still be issues there also).

Which left 4 others in plastic cases. For three of them the artwork was inserted quite crookedly and each was quite wrinkled up in places, some worse than others (nothing was going to fix those issues, and I don't really want to deal with replacements of just the artwork (ditto for the cardboard issues above))… one of those three also had a loose disc. And the fourth one was like the ones that had some pictures posted here a few weeks back, where the artwork was inserted down towards the bottom and there was a corresponding crease and some tears along the bottom of the artwork; were it not for the additional dent and long scrape on its backside, I might have kept it, as it wasn't too bad.

So keeping 5, 8 going back later today. I likely will be retrying most or all of the returned ones via b&n (stores) in July. Though I'm more and more wondering after each flash sale how much longer I'm going to keep going through this exercise before I just give up and shift over to the channel for most all of my future Criterion needs (ain't getting any younger).
