Both of those in 4K would also be ace. Love Cocktail almost as much as Risky Business.

The Color of Money seems more likely since it's a Scorsese film and his relationship with Criterion is pretty well known. It kinda blows my mind that Risky Business is the first Tom Cruise film to make it in the Criterion Collection. I think many of us would've expected the highly demanded Eyes Wide Shut to have come first. Nonetheless, this surprise was an absolutely amazing one. And speaking of Disney owned titles, I would love a 4K of The Sound of Music. I don't care who releases it, I just want it in my collection. |

Dang it I swear I don’t do enough research on these things. I just assume certain titles don’t have Blu-Rays when in reality they do have Blu-Rays already, or got a Blu-Ray in the past. I feel so dumb I need to research these things better before making assumptions.

At least North By Northwest has a solid Blu-ray. Amadeus only has a snapper DVD, and I don't even know if it's anamorphic. While The 400 Blows is on 4K in France, Criterion and the films' owner MK2 should definitely do all of the films from the Doniel DVD set in 4K. That DVD reguarly breaks $80 on eBay. |

As for O Lucky Man! (one of the most expensive mass produced DVDs out there), I don't know what the actual hell is holding that up. I also don't know why the DVD went out of print, when WB owns at least US rights outright, at most the whole film outright. By the time the plastic in the discs had dried, it was already OOP. If Britannia Hospital can get two Blu-rays (Powerhouse in the UK, KL in the US), O Lucky Man! can get at least one. Considering it is the film that bought McDowell to Kubrick's attention, and got him his legendary role in A Clockwork Orange, that film needs to be seen again. Better to pay $25-$30 for a Criterion 4K or $20-$25 for a Blu-ray than over $70 for a DVD. Which of course brings us to Kubrick, who has gotten some of the best discs ever from Criterion. Somewhat shockingly, there have been no Kubrick 4Ks from Criterion, and we're on track to go three years without one from WB. The first four will be in print from KL for a while. Maybe they'll come back to Criterion, maybe they won't. Worth double dipping for the special features. Spartacus and Dr. Strangelove, the only perk of them coming to Criterion would be they get easier to find. Also, I don't know whether there was any special features lag on Strangelove, but there was definitely some on Spartacus. (At least one Blu-ray or 4K review actually concluded with "...and go get the laserdisc or DVD from Criterion too!" That says a lot. Lolita, I don't know where that is. I'm assuming it won't be coming from WHV since they don't really support people creeping on young girls and they really don't want to be attached to a movie that has any connection to something like that. WAC is still on the "no 4K" bandwagon, which leaves Criterion. 2001, while the old special features are interesting, the main draw to get me to repurchase this again (just bought another 4K back in the fall) is if they finally release the deleted scenes which WB has confirmed still exist (they're supposedly a 35mm reduction print). That would justify the triple dip for me. ACO, that one could use a lot of work. First, give us that mono track in PCM. After hearing Criterion's work on the After Hours mono track, and after recently hearing the ACO soundtrack on vinyl, this needs to happen. Second, bring over all the US special features from the previous discs, including Stanley Kubrick: A Life In Pictures and O Lucky Malcolm! that were shamefully deleted from most of the 4K releases of the film. Third, and this would be huge, license the hundreds of hours and thousands of pages of news clips, articles, interviews, documentaries (especially Forbidden Fruit), and the like from the UK created between 1971 and 2001, where the film had a much different reception than it did here. Given the footage's nature, it likely still all exists, or at least the vast majority of it does. That would be "release of the year" material. BL, they already have a solid 4K transfer, just do the HDR and DV and release it. It will be solid. The Shining, go back and redo the color timing so that it actually resembles the original theatrical prints. Again, give us the original soundtrack in PCM, which hasn't been available since at least 1999. I think all the special features have always been carried over, so fortunately that's not an issue here. FMJ, the actual transfer is great, and though I've heard some grumblings about it, I can't for the life of me see anything wrong with it. For the third time, do the original soundtrack in PCM, which hasn't been out since at least the 90s. The only special features that were left off were one or two documentaries from the Digibook Blu-ray, so it would be nice to carry them over. EWS, first of all, the unrated cut released in 2007 (with the exception of the edited Jocelyn Pook track) is the cut Kubrick turned in six days before his death. Restore and release this already, and including the 2007 special features would make this a legendary release. Also, when there's controversy as to the aspect ratio (Killer's Kiss, The Killing, Paths Of Glory, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, ACO, BL, The Shining, FMJ, EWS), or there's multiple cuts of the movie (Killer's Kiss - unsure if the original ending still exists, Spartacus, Lolita, 2001, ACO, The Shining, EWS), restore and release all cuts and all aspect ratios. For arguably the greatest director ever, his films deserve to be treated like they're made by the greatest director ever. |

I'll also add a few more to the list that I'd love to see Criterion revisit at some point soon. The Last Temptation Of Christ on 4K (I've been passing on the Blu-ray for years), which needs a brand new restoration, and Goodfellas on 4K, which only needs a new HDR/DV grade overseen by Scorsese and his team and it will be good to go. Goodfellas always has been a very dark movie, and Scorsese is known for his dark visuals. He also knows how to present these scenes without the dark visuals being crushed. After Hours, where 90% of the movie takes place outside at night, is a great example of this. Despite being predominantly dark throughout, there was not one instance of crushing in the entire transfer. Goodfellas, on the other hand, was perfect until they passed it to the HDR guy at WB, and now the 4K is crushed to all hell. A new HDR/DV grade and Goodfellas will literally be a whole different disc in more ways than one. A Kundun 4K would be nice too, but the admittedly solid Blu-ray from Kino is likely the best we will get for a long while. Another extremely underrated Scorsese film we need from Criterion is Silence. I think that's with Lionsgate, and I don't know if they have a contract with anyone. KOTFM is one that needs to show the hell up already. The region-locked 4K in Europe could always be imported, but still they should just release the movie on 4K here. I've always believed that while there's no "second tier Scorsese", there are two groups of his films: the masterpieces that are known (Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Departed, Killers Of The Flower Moon), and the masterpieces that went under the radar (Who's That Knocking At My Door, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, After Hours, Casino, Bringing Out The Dead, Silence). Oh, and CODA needs a Blu-ray or 4K too. Boutiques would either be Criterion or Arrow, studios would either be Sony or Lionsgate. Boutiques there's a chance of a 4K, studios it's almost a sure thing it will be Blu-ray only. But I think that movie was shot/edited/mastered at 2K and it has a 2K DI, so aside from compression and HDR/DV you're not really missing out by getting "only" a Blu-ray. |

Couple questions about some of the releases...

The "Final Preview Cut", I'm 99% sure that's the version on all the 1988-onwards tapes and the laserdiscs, and is one of the discs in the 2005 DVD. I'm shocked there's not a 4K restoration of this, since it's arguably the best version of the movie (only one of the three in this set that Peckinpah oversaw, edited, and approved). Not a dealbreaker, but still a damn shame. The "50th Anniversary Release", I'm not sure whether this is a new cut or the 2005 DVD cut that rightfully has a pretty controversial reception. Someone please fill in the blanks/correct any mistakes here. Quote:

And The Sound Of Music has a solid scan and restoration, the problem is the color timing. It falls on the bad side of "looks like it was shot yesterday", if you know what I mean. If you look at the 2005 DVD, you'll see way better color timing. It was approved by Robert Wise too. If they just took the previous restoration, timed it to be identical to the 2005 disc, and dropped it on either a Blu-ray or an SDR 4K, it would be a major improvement over what they have now. If they redid it from scratch, and had the color timing, HDR, and DV done by someone who isn't a fool, it would be even better. |
