A new score for The Phantom Carriage (1921) has been recorded by Kælan Mikla and Bardi Johannsson.

You can listen to the tracks and buy the record here.

I have been a huge fan of Kælan Mikla, an Icelandic goth band, for many years now and even saw them in concert here in Atlanta last year.

Here's the first video from the project...

I invite everyone here to go check out the Kundun thread, where it seems Disney is still burying the film to please the CCP.

Scorsese needs to raise hell about this film so there’s at least a chance of getting a release. No guarantees, but if Criterion got WALL-E, they could easily get Kundun. All it takes is Disney signing on the dotted line and the movie is theirs.

Honestly, I'm still not buying this film yet don't get me wrong I do plan on buying it at some point as I love me some court room drama films like 12 Angry Men, and others, but it isn't a high priority currently. On the other hand, I did pre-order Pat Garrett, Le Samourai, and Black God White Devil though so excited about that. So excited about all these films, and I will be pre-ordering Farewell, My Concubine too once it's up for pre-order.

Default Anatomy of a Fall

I plan on seeing Anatomy of a Fall at some point (will probably get the Criterion US Blu-ray release), partly based on a fellow member's positive comments/observations (have only read very good things about the film).

There were actual news articles bringing up about the history of this film back in November 2023. Kino did release this on Blu-ray that went OOP a few years back so I find this a bit surprising considering that this film has always been something that the Chinese government and Disney hated. I would feel like something like Farewell My Concubine, The Last Emperor, and Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl would've been more likely to be banned. With that said, the latter of the three has yet to see even an HD scan and at least the government did have some issues with the film being shot in Tibet. It's probably worth noting that the three I listed are a bit different from Kundun since Kundun deals with the Dalai Lama and religious faith, which is what China meant when the film was intervening with their internal affairs during production.

I think it would be nice for Scorsese or some other company to buy it off of Disney's hands. However, there's probably a multitude of issues that will probably occur because of copyright issues (I don't know if this film is bad in particular though). Maybe the same thing could happen with Warner Bros. and The Devils although I may be oversimplifying all of this.

With that said, I don't firmly believe that Disney is putting this one in a chokehold, at least not as bad as Warner Bros. and The Devils. I see that there is a release of this film in Australia by Imprint, which isn't the best boutique label in terms of encoding, but it's better than nothing. This will probably be more interesting for those who have actually missed out on the Kino edition. I do believe that this film will probably never see another restoration maybe forever (But maybe I'm just too dramatic).

Looks like Kino took Bunuel's Death in the Garden off their website. They also lost The Milky Way a while ago. I'm hoping it's because Criterion picked them up. A few years ago Guillermo Del Toro tweeted that he's working with Criterion to release Bunuel's Mexican films. There are also several Bunuel films currently in their collection that need upgrades. I'd really like them to release more of his films soon. It's been a few years since their last Bunuel release.

I have no problem with people who buy Criterion at the regular price, or settle for a 30% discount, rather than waiting for the 4 times a year that all titles can be purchased at 50% off. I figure it's great for Criterion, as they make more money. It's also great for me because they can now afford to give the rest of us the 50% discount.

As such, carry on.

Well I like getting Criterion titles in the mail as a pre-order when they release as it's a tradition I've started, and it's something I really look forward to with each Criterion release on Blu-Ray, or 4K UHD. Sure it's weird, but I enjoy pre-ordering Criterion stuff. That being said, I will be buying a couple of titles during the sale so yes I know about the sale, but I have certain titles I want to buy during the sale that aren't pre-orders.

Amazon tends to match Barnes & Nobles within the first few days of the sale going live. You could preorder from either of them and get these titles for 50% off and still get them on release.

I think I’ll do that for Risky Business, and Le Samourai. As I wanted almost every title except Perfect Days as there’s so many great titles, and it’s quite exciting. I am looking forward to four of the five titles announced for July. I think I’ll pick up three titles for the sale Blue Velvet, Muholland Drive, and Barry Lyndon. These are the three high priority titles I’m currently missing from my Criterion Collection physical Blu-Ray wise. There are other Criterion titles I want to buy, but these three have been titles I’ve been eyeing for years.

Along with the two remaining Kurosawa titles I don’t own yet, but that’s for later in the year. Along with some Criterion horror titles I’m missing too like Kwaidan, and Eyes Without a Face, and House, and Cat People. That being said, that’s for later this year so not immediate priorities. There’s a number of others that I didn’t list, but that’s again for later in the year.

Amazon has Jackie Chan: Emergence of a Superstar 6-Film collection down to $61.89, which is a little better than 50% off.

The Criterion US Blu-ray release of The Phantom Carriage has been on my want list for some time (it's the type of film I'm interested in). The new score I read about on here a few weeks ago, and I was interested in hearing it (have checked the website linked to in your post, and am glad to see there is a CD version happening as well).

Junior Bonner seems to be OOP from Kino. Furthermore, both The Wild Bunch and The Getaway were both released 17 years ago in 2007. That was essentially the first full year of the Blu-ray format.

I would like to see Criterion get their hands on John Ford's masterpiece The Searchers. I had a conversation with a reliable source several years ago about WB releasing a newer version of the film, but I was told that WB has no plans on touching that film again.
The Wild Bunch is my favorite Peckinpah film. I do not mind Kino releasing it in 4k. Their Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia blu ray was great (reissue).

Went to see John Waters' birthday show yesterday and during his Q&A I asked him if there's anything going on with Desperate Living/new disc. And he said something like:

"I really don't know. I don't know what Criterion would want to put out next, but if I had to guess they want to put out Hairspray".
