I had never had this happen before on any disc. I came here and I can see this is a known issue hence why I so quickly mailed the disc to Criterion and I am sure they will take care of me. So thanks a lot to Blu-ray.com!

Anyways after this I decided to check every Criterion Blu-ray in my collection, luckily I only have ~40 or so.
I started each disc and if it took me to the menu I started the film, checked the time/chapter menu, if this all went smoothly I stopped there and moved onto the next disc. I ended up finding one more bad disc, Criterion 'M'. The rest all at least took me to the disc menu and the film successfully started.
Question is, was this^ enough to determine if a disc is bad or not?
It's hard to say. I think all my discs that were defective failed to load a menu at all, so it's possible your disc may be okay. Look at the bottom of the discs too, if they looked dark brown, or "bronze' then they will probably fail eventually. Worst case if you do happen to play it later, and have issues you can send it back to Criterion like you did for 8 1/2.

Seeing Only Angels Have Wings (a personal favorite) in his picks, I'd like to see Howard Chaykin's top ten (or Howie in the closet). He pointed out that OAHW is the best film version of Terry and the Pirates (obvious once you have it pointed out to you).

Exact same scenario happened to me with my first pressing copy of The Lady Vanishes; played fine when originally purchased/years later (on the same blu-ray player), stuck on the 'C' in the corner. Of course, Criterion replaced it.

What Criterion told me a few years ago was that if the code, 'BVDL' DOES NOT appear on the data side inner ring, the disc is in danger of going belly up, and that I should send those discs in for replacement, even if they currently work. Now, that was a few years ago, so one should confirm with them if one owns such discs, in case their thinking has changed on this.

Here is what Criterion sends out if it helps:

We have confirmed that certain Blu-ray discs pressed at a replication facility that we used for a period in 2010 have become defective, showing a noticeable bronze discoloration on the underside and developing playback problems. We have confirmed the problem for select titles, but not on all copies of these titles. All of these titles have since been re-pressed at a different pressing plant, and the vast majority of discs in circulation should not be affected.

The confirmed potentially affected Blu-ray titles are:
8 1/2
Bigger than Life
For All Mankind
Gomorrah
In the Realm of the Senses
Kagemusha
Lola Montes
M
Monsoon Wedding
Monterey Pop (DISC ONE only)
Paris, Texas
Revanche
Ride with the Devil
Sanjuro
Seventh Seal, The
Stagecoach
Summer Hours
Vivre sa Vie
Walkabout
Wings of Desire

Days of Heaven - out of print but affected discs are still being replaced
Howards End - out of print but affected discs are still being replaced
Le Cercle Rouge - out of print but affected discs are still being replaced
Pierrot le Fou - the version released 2008-2010 is out of print but affected discs are still being replaced

Not all runs of these discs were affected with disc rot. If your disc is displaying discoloration and/or having playback issues, please report it. Replacements will be honored for the foreseeable future

For any in the NYC area, The Metrograph will be showing Ozu's Floating Weeds on May 3rd, 5th, and 7th.

Some great picks.
That's a nice list, unsurprisingly.

I think that if you send in for a replacement copy of:
Quote:
Le Cercle Rouge - out of print but affected discs are still being replaced
Pierrot le Fou - the version released 2008-2010 is out of print but affected discs are still being replaced
You will no longer get the original discs, but copies of the newer re-issues.

I wonder if that'll be the case for 8 1/2 too?

That one, I don't think so, because, unless I'm wrong, the current solo Blu-ray is the same as it has always been, while the different one is in the Fellini box. I think they just ran out of extra copies of the original Le Cercle Rouge and Pierrot le Fou Blu-rays.

Kerry Condon was good in Night Swim, which I liked more than the average bear.

I live a mile down the street from an AMC theater and I have an AMC membership (up to three movies a week for $25/month, meaning that the membership pays for itself if one goes to more than one movie in any given month).

As such, I tend to go see a lot of middling horror movies from Blumhouse and the like...and I enjoy pretty much all of them. Horror movies are like pizza, in that even the bad ones are pretty good.

That and the fact that the AMC theater down the street is basically my church. Even if a movie is mid or outright bad, the experience of sitting in the darkened room watching something on a big screen is cathartic. That is why the pandemic lockdown hit hard, because I had to go a year without my "church."

If you're referring to how long have I enjoyed "bad" horror movies, I have enjoyed them all my life. The vast majority of them are truly entertaining.

Incidentally, I wish that Criterion would put Equinox out on Blu-ray.

I would love Equinox. Unfortunately the better cut of the two had a lot of SD inserts for effects shots sadly

For those that hate digipaks, Three Colors Blu-ray box set appears to be getting broken up into individual releases in Scanavo cases
