Also, regarding my not having a region free player, it's damn near the bottom of my priority list, right with movies (surprisingly).

My current priority list is debt, house, car, food, retirement (I don't want to be 100 years old working a cash register), clothes, healthcare, stuff for a new house, better necessary electronics (phone and computer), fun stuff I absolutely need (very few movies, music, and books), the fun stuff I want more than others (honestly, a proper theater system is the big piece of hardware I want), then more usual fun stuff I've been wanting for years (most other movies, music, books, and players), and then just filler for the collection.

Whenever the shit hits the fan in my life (sudden debt, medical stuff, funerals, and most recently hotel and food bills after I damn near lost everything several months ago), everything that's not essential gets wiped out. This time, I lost everything.

Most of the debt's fortunately gone, but I haven't really had fun in a while.

Sometimes, even people like me can't afford "just $100" for a region free player, even when you sit the money aside for it.

I recall seeing Godzilla vs Biollante 4k on ebay. Isn't there also a Remastered 2K version? I'm not much of movie/film transfer savvy person to be honest sadly.

That's the only one Heisei film right now on 4K. I'm just not sure if Toho is gonna allow Criterion to use them. Toho used to not be this way. What caused it?...

Sorry to hear all that. You could always try Ebay if you're looking for region-free DVD player. I found a Philips DVP3980 and found a way to make it region-free by setting it to Region 0, or Region ALL, as it is alternatively called. I bought from Goodwill last month.

The 4K remaster of Biollante is on the 2023 Blu-ray from Toho.
The Return of Godzilla was also remastered but it has not yet received a disc release.

We won't get anything before Japan does, but I suppose there's a chance they might have the remaster for Biollante on the Criterion Channel since it's already on disc there.

Sorry to hear about your recent losses, but by the tone of your post it seems to me you are on the right path with a great attitude about the future.

Debt can be managed, lost items can be replaced in most cases, but in my experience unless you have the right perspective about what is truly important in life, all is lost.

My life is filled with positives, but I was raised without many of the things some take for granted, and my early years were filled with the struggle of working while completing my education and living from paycheck to paycheck.

Perhaps that's why certain statements which may seem innocuous on the surface perhaps cut a bit deeper for me than for others, but all the same, don't sweat a region-free player or not having the funds to purchase every title that comes down the pike, and as I do appreciate what you have at the moment.

I got a DVD player from Goodwill just before the shit hit the fan. Now all I need is $40 and...

[Show spoiler]

Even though it's pretty hard, my trick is I try not to pass my hardships into others' laps. And also have fun as much as possible. I'm still looking forward to having a region-free player one day. But first I have to get the debt collectors off my back.

The points myself and Matt were making were in relation to people that freely buy $20-$30 discs each week or often each month. Stuff easily gets twisted on here to suit the narrative people want to portray. If you are one of those people that spends a decent amount on discs each month, then I stand by the opinion that it doesn’t make sense to not have a region free player.

As for yourself Shane based on your current situation, naturally it wouldn’t make sense and I agree with you. Sorry to hear you are having a rough time of it. It sounds like you are getting on top of it, which is good to read. Health is wealth and family/stability always comes first.

Keep at it mate. You will soon be where you want to be

Toho has always been kind of prickly, especially with Godzilla.

This example isn't Godzilla, but Toho got pissed at Criterion for having a restoration demo on their initial Seven Samurai DVD and had them pull it and remove the demo because they felt it made them look bad.

One problem with going region free is that you tend to jump on wanted titles as soon as someone makes them available. At least that's what I did.
Now I have boxes of things I paid decent money in years past to import, that have all been outclassed when domestic versions finally got released. Not just a few extras here and there. I'm talking about substantially better PQ and/or AQ.

People were experiencing this phenomenon frequently with Imprint, but it spans all territories and labels over the years. I thought Anolis was a safe bet early on for the Hammers and Universals. Nope. The eventual Shout releases were closer to definitive and frequently exhibited better PQ and more accurate framing. Not to mention beautiful new art and English language packaging.
I not only have many regretful import purchases over the years, but they sit here useless because I can't even give them away to friends. They can't make use of them. It's sheer waste and it's very disheartening.

I still tend to jump before I look.

Shane sounds like he's got his priorities in order and a good attitude to help manage them. I wish him luck and hope the days ahead go smoother.

All solid points. I don’t think anyone will ever win the import game. I think everyone has probably imported something, only to have a better release come along. I just enjoy having the option. For example, Kino’s Silence of the Lambs 4K was botched and Arrow UK have came to the rescue. If I was in the US, I would want that release, even if I only collected Blu Rays.

There are great releases in the US and UK. It’s just nice to always have the option to obtain and play whatever release you like.

Kind of mental really if you think about it. Well, to me at least. You'd think some companies would be honored to have their films to be restored by another company but that not always like that, I guess.

Prediction. I won't get Barry Lyndon or Eyes Wide Shut in 4Ks like I want.

I'm sure it's highly unlikely, but can someone with a Channel subscription check if Friedkin's Jade plays with a Criterion logo at the start:

https://www.criterionchannel.com/dir...lliam-friedkin

Kino had said the movie was picked up by another label. I imagine it's more likely Arrow, or SF, but you never know these days.

IIRC the issue was Criterion showed TOHO's restoration and how bad it was, and then showed Criterion's restoration and how it was improved. TOHO took offense because it was basically a whole video showing why TOHO's restoration efforts were inferior.

I'd be really surprised to see that come from Criterion. The two you mentioned or maybe Cinematographe seem more likely.
