I wouldn't be surprised if Youth of the Beast (1963) is on their radar, especially seeing it's one of Suzuki's more popular/well-known/important films! Seeing this is the same team that did Branded to Kill (1967), Profound Desires of the Gods (1968), as well as most of (if not all) of Nikkatsu's other restorations, I wouldn't be surprised if this was another stellar restoration.

So who is actually correct? Can anyone confirm whether the Arrow 5.1 is OG or a remix?

3 or 4 but plenty that I haven't. Too much good stuff coming out right now to be focused on upgrades.

Holy new information!

Which DVD are we talking about here? There's DVDs from 1998, 1999, and 2006 listed on our site?

And were there two different releases of that DVD?

We may get one of those for November.

Still, aside from the KL 4Ks (and FaD had an encode from hell), we haven't got a Kubrick 4K since ACO nearly three years ago!

If Criterion did 4Ks of Lolita (I believe OOP), Spartacus (OOP, frequently goes for insane prices, but it sold enough that it shouldn't be that expensive), ACO, BL, The Shining, FMJ, and EWS, it would be amazing. They'd take the bad parts of the current releases and make them good, and take the good parts and make them better.

I've been watching ACO again, right after watching Criterion's 4K of After Hours, and the Criterion disc has a great PCM mono mix. Imagine Wendy Carlos' score in PCM just tearing your speakers to shreds. If ACO could have that level of sound quality on disc, it would be truly amazing.

Kino had said the movie was picked up by another label. I imagine it's more likely Arrow, or SF, but you never know these days.

I'm surprised Light Sleeper still hasn't gotten a Blu-ray release here in the states (I bought myself a copy on iTunes about a year ago).

Would love to see UHDs of Manhunter and L.A. Confidential, even though I'm certain Criterion won't be getting these titles (L.A. Confidential is stuck with Disney now).
With Jade, I wonder if it's one cut or both cuts. The DC is only out on tape, and it's pretty hard to find.

The rest of Friedkin's stuff is going to start coming out now that he's not alive to cause the poor studio restoring the film any grief. The boutiques would pounce at the opportunity to release normal versions of The French Connection, The Exorcist, Sorcerer, Cruising, and the rest of his films. Frankly, they may have pounced already.

I'm not even joking, if they release a normal copy of The Exorcist, with 100% original picture and 100% original sound, I'll buy it. Even after the other 4K was released just last year, even after the scramble to get copies (I got a rock), I'll pounce on a normal copy of this movie.

Manhunter is a case of good news and bad news. The good news is Manhunter is getting a 4K soon, no later than 2026, and there's hard evidence to back it up. The bad news is the evidence is that Michael Mann recently completed his "new and improved" cut of Manhunter, and that's what will be on the 4K.

Seriously, we can't win with some people.

Much like Friedkin, the unedited versions of Mann's movies will be out within a few years of his eventual death.

I'm sure there's new masters for all of these too, at least 2K. The Ref has one, and it's just gathering dust.

I recently checked out both my tape and DVD, and they're both awful. Knowing that Disney has a better master and they're just sitting on it is such a smack in the face.

It is. So far I've had well over a 90% satisfaction rate.

My honest thoughts on the Collection, of which I've seen maybe 100 movies max, is that's a list of movies I should see. Maybe I'll like them, maybe I won't, but I'll at least see them. Many of these films (including all of the works of Kurosawa, Ozu, Bergman, and P&P) are ones I would've never heard of or watched had I not been introduced to the Collection as a teenager.

Just take a list of titles, seek them out, and watch them. If you like the, great. If you don't, great. You'll still be seeing movies you otherwise wouldn't have thought twice about.

Pretty much my same thoughts. People shouldn't get so caught up in Criterion's prestige marketing hype.

The first one from 1998. Actually I think the demo is still on the second one (1999), but the menu to get to it was dropped.

Thanks for reaching out and for your interest in our upcoming 4K UHD release of THE LAST EMPEROR: https://www.criterion.com/films/254-the-last-emperor

We chose to not include the 5.1 track because it's actually just a 5.1 decode of the 2.0 surround track that's already on our disc. I hope that's helpful.

Best,
Jon Mulvaney

I'm starting to think the "two steps forward on step back" thing is intentional. Not only do we have to buy umpteen releases of everything, but we also can't make a few bucks selling off our old copies because they're still relevant.

The Last Emperor is a Best Picture winner. It deserves better than to be caught in this BS.

Is there a way to get to it? Entering certain titles in the player, certain shortcuts, etc?

I did some research and this debate has been going on since the BD release. There were some insanely nitpicky discussions about the state of surround in 1988 which made my head hurt. At any rate, Criterion seemed very sure about it back in 2008 as well.

(I did see a shrinkingly of people complaining about the dialogue levels on the 5.1 mix, for the record, though that's hardly scientific.)

There are a lot of Criterion collection titles on Max, movies I might've skipped if they weren't on the collection but now I can check them out and the ones I really like are added to my wishlist for future Criterion sales.

All I can find is if you play VTS_02_1.VOB file in you computer's disc drive. But there may be ways to play it in your player, I am not sure. The demo is on youtube

Bummer to hear about Donald Sutherland passing. I hope that one day Klute will make it to 4k. I would have never put him together with Jane Fonda but hey it worked they had chemistry.
