Yeah Criterion used the old master. I guess the assumption was Toho (being the same region) wouldn't let them have the newer restoration, but I don't know if that was ever confirmed. Frankly they shouldn't have bothered releasing it and should have replaced it with another title.

Others are going to tell you that you should be able to contact Criterion and they will make it right.

I contacted them about my scratched copy of Stalker that affects playback and was ignored.

I’m not saying don’t try to contact them, I’m just saying don’t get your hopes up.

B&N definitely do if you tell them it's defective/damaged in the store. Doesn't seem to make sense they wouldn't do it for online orders. I would try to talk to someone else before contacting criterion.

If a store is convenient to you, you can take it there for returns. They exchange for the same disc unless it's not in stock.

I guess I misread what it said on their return policy page.

Separate thing, but since the sale is ending today I bought Seven Samurai. I have a borrowed DVD from Japan that looks like a 16mm print that was hit by a truck and has subtitles that make absolutely no sense (“You, woman you hear?”—yes, that’s an exact quote), so I figured that needs replacing, and then I can finally understand what’s happening.

What options do I have if I bought a disc in-store that has scratches and I would like a replacement but the store is out-of-stock of that title? Can I just contact the B&N online customer service for a replacement?

FYI, a 4K Seven Samurai release is coming very soon. A new restoration was done recently and has been showing all over the country.

Can someone tell me why there hasn’t been a rerelease of Chungking Express as an individual tiltle?

I know Criterion lost the rights to it for a while. But if they can release as part of a boxset, why can’t they release it individually?

I keep thinking about buying the boxset, but mainly for Chungking Express.

So here’s what I think Criterion will be putting out in November

Seven Samurai 4K UHD
Barry Lyndon 4K UHD
Stray Dog 4K UHD plus Blu-Ray
O Lucky Man 4K UHD plus Blu-Ray
Killers of the Flower Moon 4K UHD plus Blu-Ray
Paper Moon 4K UHD plus Blu-Ray
The Blackboard Jungle/ A Warm December 4K UHD plus Blu-Ray
I definitely think both of these titles fit the Criterion Collection, and not just as standalone WAC Blu-Ray titles.

I don’t think Criterion does individual releases when they first appeared in a given format in a box set, but I could be wrong. None of the Ranown westerns, or Kieslowski’s Trois Colours, or the Bergman box set films have individual releases to my knowledge. There’s the 2008 Blu-ray but I assume you already knew about that.

In the Mood for Love came out on 4K after the WKW Blu-ray set. I'd say there's a very good chance of Chunking Express coming to 4K eventually.

Oh, yeah. That.

EDIT: The transfer, not your statement.

Man, only 2.5 weeks until the November announcements. This year has gone by way too fast. Anyway, here are my guesses:
Cape Fear (both versions) UHD
Kenji Misumi's Sword Trilogy (Kiru, Ken, Kenki) UHD
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More UHD
Atlantics UHD

Umbrella is doing a 4k release of 'Eyes Without a Face(for sale in October) '. If you're stateside you will need a region free player, though.

Aren’t most of Umbrella’s releases on Blu-Ray region free anyway though? I believe they are that’s why Mask, and Blown Away worked perfectly on my Region A Blu-Ray player so Eyes Without a Face should work without issue too.

Yeah, the Umbrella release is likely completely region free.

The Cape Fear remake is so underrated I love it Robert De Niro is so terrifying in that film. I heard the originals great too so I still need to watch the original film at some point. I would love for both versions of the film to get long awaited 4K UHD plus Blu-Ray sets it would be amazing.

I’m hoping for a number of new to Blu-Ray movie titles from Sony this year and next year as they feel more likely than most tv shows.
Both titles are owned by Universal.

Well that’s good they could definitely happen honestly I could see Kino picking up both titles with their new Universal deal. It’ll either be Kino, or Criterion putting these titles out in 4K UHD If they do it.

The Official Night of the Living Dead Facebook page just posted this. Don't know what it could mean. Maybe theatrical re-release?

Could they have gotten Dawn, and making it a separate special announcement for October? It uses a NotLD hashtag, so perhaps just wishful thinking. I don't imagine it's the 1990 film either.
