I'm actually playing shelf Jenga with my collection right now. It's terrifying everytime I want to watch a movie from the middle of the stack.

Just borrowing from domino, but many of the releases in the picture are still out of print… More coming back to life? (In one form or another…) A few already have.

I noticed that too. I feel like that could also be an indirect sign to point to Dawn of the Dead, which has been long OOP now in the US, coming back in print. Martin is the other possibility there. I don't imagine it's anything outside of Romero since this news is stemming from a NotLD FB page. I'm continuing not to get my hopes up however.

I just checked myself, and they're definitely using the Out of Print search filter at the site to get those titles shown.

I could definitely see The Killer and Hard Boiled getting new Blu-Rays and 4K releases from Criterion at the end of this year, or next year. I think we are either getting Martin, or Dawn of the Dead in 4K UHD most likely the latter title if I have to guess.

In a shocking plot twist, all of the films seen in the image are re-entering the Collection as part of Criterion’s first slate of 8K UHD BLU-RAY DISCS — SICKENINGLY HIGH RESOLUTION!

Just watched Querelle (on the UK disc from Artificial Eye). Call me a philistine but, its baroque-experimental sets and gorgeous Vilos Zsigmond style smoky cinematography notwithstanding, I found the movie as awkward, emotionally distant and excruciatingly dull as a clumsy art student project

LOL well you are right in a sense. The films on the shelves are there because I ran out of room on the media shelves. It’s a bookshelf, or it was supposed to be. But now it has more films than books.

It will be so hi-res, you won't see any image at all, you will only see grain swarming around like microscopic creatures under a high-powered lens

Would be great but seems highly unlikely at this point since the rights owners don’t seem particularly interested in making any reasonable deals with anyone.

Do the OCNs of The Killer and Hard Boiled even exist anymore, let alone in good condition? I've heard Golden Harvest and the like have historically taken pretty poor care of their films.

A ton of Golden Harvest films have gotten pretty good remasters recently as have a lot of HK films in general thanks a company setting up base in HK to do restorative work. A Better Tomorrow recently got a remaster, so I would think the Killer and Hardboiled which are pretty massive films probably have a good chance of still having the OCN.

Since people are talking about the John Woo movies again, I would like to give some news for those who aren't caught up on the two:

- The Killer has been restored in 4K recently in China. This was part of a selection of Hong Kong movies that were restored by China Film Archive including Stephen Chow's King of Beggars and Jackie Chan's Operation Condor (AKA Armour of God II). Unfortunately, these films were restored in collaboration with Volcano Engine, which is a company that is trying out AI upscaling and is connected to the social media platform, TikTok. I think it is safe to conclude two things: The Killer will be restored with AI software and that fans will be screwed from ever getting a filmic or accurate restoration of the film.

- There is a Japanese Blu-ray for Hard Boiled coming out next week that is supposedly a new 2K remaster though we have no word on the quality yet. Fingers crossed it turns out to be good, not that the remaster for the current HK and German Blu-rays is bad to begin with IMO.

- So if Criterion releases these two, we can only hope that the restorations do turn out well as it seems that no one in the forums have yet seen these new versions yet. I would be very skeptical of the quality of The Killer but I still have some hope for Hard Boiled.

- Regardless of restoration, these films have been stuck in distribution hell for markets outside of Asia and we will probably not see a release for these films for a while based on what we know. This is a story that has been told many times (You can search through the forums for the films on this site or watch a video/tweet that explains the situation). Even John Woo has addressed this issue and hoped that he could restore these films himself. No clue if he was involved in anything relating to these two films lately.
