So uh since we’re getting another Bogdanovich title in November heck yeah do you think we could see Nickelodeon at some point? Criterion has a deal with Sony so maybe we will see it eventually. I also see Mask coming from Kino Lorber not Criterion.

I would love for Nickelodeon to come out, both color and BW versions for comparisons. Some good extras could come out of it too.

I hadn't watched the Gershon Closet Picks until now. Her picking the Godzilla Showa set, and humming the Ifukube theme makes me love this woman even more than I already have

I first saw it in 2020 in BW and was quite perplexed by its poor reputation. But regardless, it really just FELT like something Criterion would rescue or even Indicator.

Cinematographe would actually be pretty perfect for this film as well!

Super excited about Seven Samurai because I am going from DVD to 4K.

But yes, The Bad Sleep Well is a film I would love to get a 4k upgrade of. That would constitute a huge upgrade in those stark black and white visuals. There are so many amazing scenes in very low light that would look so much better. The other "lighter" films by Kurosawa I feel aren't a priority for them to upgrade, sadly.

I was looking at my DVD of Seven Samurai because I wanted to see if there was any special features they added or changed. It looks to be exactly the same except for one thing.

While the previous release is at 1.33:1 this new 4k is 1.37:1. Does anyone have any insight about what is changed in the picture? Who has seen this new restoration screened?I was thinking that it may be a slightly larger field of view.

Yeah, the Bad Sleep Well is actually one of my favorite Kurosawa films. It's very complex and well made. I really hope this is one Criterion goes for soon, but something tells me they might go for titles like Yojimbo and Hidden Fortress first. We'll see.

The real appeal for the Kurosawa set (for me, anyway), is that it sounds exhausting just going one by one for these. It's just been so long.

Yes. That's what I was trying to say too, but not as succinctly. Thanks!

When Criterion last remastered Seven Samurai, it was in 2006 for DVD and that same master was used for the 2011 Blu-ray. Just like how 1.78:1 has fallen out of favor of the more precise 1.85:1, it's more common for 1.37:1 to be utilized than slightly trimming (or opening, depending on the film) to 1.33:1 for Academy Ratio films.

More to do with the new restoration being 18 years newer than the last one.

Do I understand right that, according to Criterion policy, they will put the original BD master of Seven Samurai with the 4K upgrade? Does one get an upgraded BD if one gets the BD now?

Also I just picked up a nice Criterion 4 film Blu-Ray horror set on EBay it was a good price honestly it only ended up being 75 dollars total for all four titles. Plus I need more Criterion horror titles in my collection as I only have two. The set included Bogdanovich’s Targets, The Uninvited, Island of Lost Souls, and The Innocents. I picked these titles up for October as it will give me more spooky films to watch, and Targets is apparently one of the most disturbing titles in the Criterion collection. Also Boris Karloff as the lead is just perfect casting as he’s quite scary in a number of films.

Honestly, I wish Criterion would do new artwork for their releases just the same artwork for the 4K of Seven Samurai is just really lazy sorry but it is. I'm also not happy there's no HDR, or Dolby Vision which the new BFI release has. It's a black and white movie it should have HDR and Dolby Vision it doesn't make any sense. I would understand if it's only getting released on Blu-Ray, but it's not it is getting put out in 4K. Sure I'm a big fan of Criterion but not doing either of things is really stupid new artwork for re-releases is something labels do Criterion should do that too.

Both died at age 88. That’s a pretty good run.

I loved’em both but AD was truly one of the all time greats for me.And yes, ironic that they both went out at the crazy 88sRIP indeed. Thanks for all the good times.

Rest in Peace Alain Delon. one of my all time favorites.

What a sad week for cinema lovers.

Gena Rowlands

Gena Rowlands and Alain Delon passing just a few days apart. What a terrible week.

I’m in the midst of a nine film study of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s works, but I’m going to watch a number of their films this weekend. The Criterion Channel has created a wonderful tribute to both Gena and Alain. Purple Noon is at the top of my list.
