It's well worth importing (the corrected version of) that disc. The transfer is excellent.

Which is the corrected version? What were the errors on the previous disc?

The 4K disc was accidently region B locked. The corrected one made it region free.

I remember reading something about burned in subs. Do you know if that is accurate?

I can't personally verify, but this member says there are some scenes with burned in Italian text. That hasn't changed between the uncorrected/corrected discs as far as I know.

If I'm not mistaken, that has been streaming on the channel for quite awhile, so maybe a disc is in the works.

Criterion used to have 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being' back on DVD. I'm not sure what happened because I don't think anybody has ever released it on blu-ray. I don't know if there's some issue with the source or the rights or what. I'm holding onto my DVD in the meantime, but it would be nice if anybody would put it out in high def.

This might sound crazy, but hear me out I think Criterion is planning on putting out Barfly on Blu-Ray either for December, or most likely next year it has been getting released in so many different countries from Germany, to Australia, to now even the UK courtesy of 88 Films. So I think the US is next to get the title not from WAC, but from Criterion. It fits so so well with their catalog so don’t be surprised if Barfly hits Blu-Ray in the US next year, or December.

My picks for December from Criterion
The Time Masters
Paris, Texas
Alfred Hitchcock Blu-Ray box set including Secret Agent and Sabotage along with Young and Innocent
The Year of Living Dangerously

Titles that are probably happening next year
Dead Presidents upgrade from Criterion’s laserdisc maybe just maybe I mean I don’t see it till next year, but it would be a huge surprise
This is Spinal Tap 4K we got Princess Bride so now it’s time for Rob Reiners other big film
Killers of the Flower Moon I’m 50/50 on this title
Barfly
White Dog I wouldn’t be surprised if we get this next year as there’s a French Blu-Ray being put out later this year so I would not be surprised if this gets upgraded next year.

I highly doubt we’re getting all of these in December, but I could be wrong I have been proven wrong before. People didn’t believe me when I posted that we were getting Paper Moon in November and then it got announced along with Seven Samurai too, and freaking Godzilla as well.

It got a new restoration a number of years ago. WAC's George Feltenstein mentioned during a podcast that Philip Kaufman wanted Criterion to release it (and they wanted to release it.) He didn't say this, but I think a hold up is/was WB's distribution deal for the The Saul Zaentz Company was expiring. They have since renewed that agreement, and I suspect that The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a likely release from Criterion (unless there is some language in the WB/Saul Zaentz Company deal that forbids licensing out titles.)

My guesses for December
Amadeus
No Country for Old Men
Eastern Condors
Winchester 73

I think Barfly and White Dog getting upgraded to Blu-Ray are titles that I think personally will, or might show up in December from Criterion. Although, I think they’ll get upgraded next year not this year. I swear if I see one or both of these titles tomorrow I’ll be so happy as they’re both on my wishlist. I don’t think that’s going to happen, but you never know with Criterion these days.

And the wonderful little quip where he describes his directorial influences as "a little Euro, a little ghetto, a little homo"...adored the whole video.

I'll bet he does. It's crazy that a whole generation of home video passed this movie by. I get that it's not the crown jewel 'Amadeus' is to Warners, but it's still a pretty prestige title. An excellent film adapted from an enduring classic novel starring high profile actors. I was always baffled as why there was no blu-ray from anybody.

My guess for the December announcements begins with Paris,Texas (UHD), beyond that it is an open field of endless possibilities.

I started working on my December predictions last night. December has sometimes been a lighter month in the past, but things may have changed now. I'll probably post mine later today.

Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired all North American rights to Vermiglio, written, directed and produced by Maura Delpero. The drama recently had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival where it won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize. Yesterday, it screened in the Special Presentations section of the Toronto International Film Festival. Sideshow and Janus are planning a theatrical release in the coming months.

Vermiglio is set in 1944, in the titular high-mountain village of the Italian Alps where war looms as a distant but constant threat. The arrival of Pietro, a refugee soldier, disrupts the dynamics of the local teacher’s family, changing them forever. During the four seasons marking the end of World War II, Pietro and Lucia, the eldest daughter of the teacher, are instantly drawn to each other, led to marriage and to an unexpected fate. As the world emerges from its tragedy, the family will face its own.

Producers are Francesca Andreoli, Leonardo Guerra Serągnoli, Maura Delpero and Santiago Fondevila Sancet. The Italian-language film is a co-production between Cinedora with RAI Cinema and co-produced by Charades Production and Versus Production, with the participation of Anonymous Content.

Sideshow and Janus Films commented, “We were deeply moved and impressed by Vermiglio, a new Italian classic that is intimate in scale but epic in scope that unfolds like a memory over four ravishingly shot seasons during the Second World War. Maura Delpero has made an unforgettable portrait of a family and especially the women as they navigate their way in a world that is about to change forever. We could not be more excited to introduce this film to American audiences in theaters.”

The deal was negotiated by Sideshow and Janus Films with Anonymous Content’s Nick Shumaker and Charades’ Carole Baraton, on behalf of the filmmakers.

I picked up Burden of Dreams on DVD in a recent sale, so it seems like the BD upgrade will probably follow shortly!
