Film Forum just posted their October to December Schedule (PDF), and there's lots of really great programs included. They'll be doing mult-week restrospectives on George Stevens, Marlon Brando, Clara Bow, and Ealing Studios. As far as Janus Films stuff goes, along with contemporary releases like All We Imagine as Light, they'll be showing The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Burmese Harp (1956), and Il Grido all from new 4K restorations. They'll also be screening Wages of Fear. I have to imagine most of these will lead to new releases, especially the Demy film, which I feel is destined to get a 4K release next year. I've cobbled together the relevant Janus titles below

Any idea when the next Flash Sale will be on Criterion’s website? I have a coupon that’s burning a hole in my pocket and deciding if I should wait or not lol.

Wow I can't wait for that restoration of The Burmese Harp!

This is my favorite thread on the site because Criterion can announce banger after banger and every time without fail at least one person will say it's a bad month because the one specific movie they want isn't listed.

Well I just watched Red River on Sunday and I have to say this is Montgomery Clift’s best film with From Here To Eternity being my second favorite film of his. I still plan on watching Judgment at Nuremberg next week it’s just a really really long film, but I’m really looking forward to watching it for the first time. Honestly, I would really like to see Criterion put out From Here to Eternity in 4K it’s a classic film that really deserves a 4K so bad. I’ve seen some of Raintree County, but I didn’t really like this film much at all it just felt very average to me. I know some people love this film like Shane Rollins, but I just don’t care for it whatsoever.

Not sure if you're aware of this already, but a 4k of From Here To Eternity was in the CCV3 boxset. It's an excellent transfer as you'd expect from Sony.

I got mine from Ebay for an affordable price, but always very possible that it'll get an individual release some day.

Well thanks for letting me know yeah you can definitely get the 4K for an affordable price on EBay as I don’t think I’m going to buy that entire 4K Columbia Classics Set as I only want certain titles. Plus those sets are so dang pricy anyway especially volume 1.

Well, whether or not something is a "banger" is subjective, particularly when it comes to Criterion, but I can totally relate to people who feel frustrated because something they desire isn't announced. I waited patiently for a Blu-ray for Element of Crime to be announced, occasionally dropping by here to express a bit of frustration - nothing wrong with that. People express their frustration in different ways - some folks may take it too far with grandiose declarations. The trick is not to let such declarations get in your way of daily life.

Everyone was embarrassing them releasing films they had released before on 4k. The boutiques all took way too long to jump on the train

I noticed on the Long Good Friday introduction the narrator says the movie doesn’t “Glamorize” the British criminal life. Ehhhhhh… This restoration of the film has made me actually look at the fashion, cars, and the homes in this movie, and made me say “Wow, that’s a damn nice bathrobe”.

I agree.

But the million dollar question is: Are Criterion collectors snobs?

It’s a mediocre month because it’s so 4K upgrade heavy, happy about No Country and Eastern Condors though.

I’m sorry but a month that include No Country, Paris Texas, and 8 1/2 cannot be considered mediocre. That’s absolutely ridiculous.

There’s no real curveballs and it took a few minutes to read the announcement and there’s nothing I’m really excited about, I’m glad other people are stoked but personally it’s a disappointment. The previous month is a little more exciting with titles like Scarface, Funny Girl, Paper Moon. I’d be more excited for the 4K upgrades if it wasn’t just the same repackaged BD (8 1/2 has already been repackaged this year for C40) and if Criterion weren’t known for imperfect compression and low pass filtering.

I think it's great they're putting out these titles on 4K, but I'd still like to see them do more mainstream stuff too.

I can understand the sentiment that this month is a bit of an “oh well” for people inclined towards new titles to disc, someone who is content with the old No Country or Paris Texas Blu-ray, someone with the Eureka set, someone tired of buying 8 1/2. I think it’s a nice capper to the year, but folks disinterested in upgrading, yeah for sure it’s a bit humdrum.

Some of the same could be said about November.

My take is the book provides greater focus to Bell in service to the book's themes, whereas the Coen's adaptation distributes screen time across three major characters to make the film their own.

Regardless, it's still Bell who chronicles the path to the heart of the story and the related themes, and the result is a terrific translation for the silver screen.

Yeah, I'm not getting that at all, unless you are viewing this film as pure 'I watching to find out who wins at the end' entertainment.

Every frame post-Moss speaks to Cormac's intentions.
