I don't know why one would be against it. Though if they are doing this, they have to try to get Blow-Up (Rights though is hard to get). It's like having the American version of Breathless and not Godards' in the collection. Not that bad, as De Palma is awesome, but you get the point.

I don't really care for Godard's Breathless, but good god is the Richard Gere American remake bad.

My Criterion Blu-ray of 'Night of the Hunter' came in today from Amazon. Amazing release. The packaging is awesome and I didn't realize it's 2 discs!

Just got done watching "The Thin Red Line." In my opinion, Criterion did a great job.

Does anyone else really want Love Streams by John Cassavetes? As far as I know it never got a DVD release in the US.

Edit: Also the rights in the US were/are held by MGM, does anyone know if Cassavetes was one of the directors excluded from the deal with MGM?

(Raises hand) I actually watched Love Streams for the first time last week, the only Cassavetes I hadn't yet seen. It'd be a superb addition, and I was supremely bummed it wasn't included in the Five Films set. The copy I watched was an anamorphic widescreen print that (whispers)...wasn't a, uh, dvd, but taken from a dvd...so I guess there's been an official dvd release at least somewhere in the world.
Edit: A check on dvdaf shows an official French release. So I guess that's what I saw.

It was their best job to date, in my opinion.

Yeah, mine finally arrived a few days ago as well. The movie itself is still great and very unique. I watched the "Charles Laughton directs The Night of the Hunter" extra just last night and can honestly say it's the best "making of" I've ever seen, even moreso than "Hearts of Darkness". It's literally like you are on set as the movie gets made.

I really wish they would have used the girl's voice for the song during the river sequence. I'm sure they had their reasons for dubbing it, but her rendition was beautiful.

Overall definitely an all around A+ effort from Criterion.

I might be alone, but I've always liked the remake.

Just a heads up, Borders has a 40% off coupon for blu-rays. It works online. Makes the Jan And Feb titles 23.00ish plus tax. Also you can use ebates to get 7.0% back. Here is the coupon: BVR1634J

You do need to be a borders rewards member but it is free to sign up.

I heard in the deals forum that it's limited to 2 titles? I hope not, I'd love to pre-order all of Feb & March if they have them.

Try doing it in separate orders. If it's anything like their in-store coupons, the system doesn't really track how many times you use it.

Just sign up. You will get a bonus of 5.00 to start. Then search for borders on the site and make your purchases. Set your account up for paypal you will get you money quicker but it does take a little while for it to payout. It is similar to bing when it was around.

I actually haven't seen it yet, and I'm currently, ahem, "acquiring" it at the moment. Probably the same thing you have. I shopped around for the French release and wasn't willing to pay $20 for a barebones, region locked dvd with forced French subs, so I went the easier route. I just enjoy his work, and Criterion seems to like him a lot too, so I thought it wouldn't be a long shot.

Also, I feel like people that enjoyed Revanche would enjoy The American with George Clooney. Similar feel. Both existentialist slow-burns involving gorgeous prostitutes with beautiful cinematography.
