I'm curious if the inevitable Janus Contemporaries release will be HD or 4K. I'm inclined to think HD, though.
I think it will get a 4K. The film is receiving truly massive critical acclaim, and it has already won the awards for Best Animated Feature by prestigious critics' associations such as the ones from Los Angeles and New York, to name just two. Could it build enough hype to actually take the Oscar away from Pixar or Dreamworks?

The scene in Tampopo where the guy and the girl pass the egg yoke back and forth is repugnant.

…absolutely revolting.

Watched the Eclipse DVD of the 1934 Les Misérables last night. A tremendous movie as a whole! It did make me wish that the DVD was in better shape, but it was well worth the watch.

Two films are credited to Janus Films in MoMA's To Save and Project The 21st MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation series: The Czech film Calamity (Kalamita) (1982), which has been streaming on the Criterion channel. And the French film Flickering Ghosts of Loves Gone By (Et j'aime à la fureur) from director André Bonzel (Man Bites Dog).

Quote:
Calamity (Kalamita). 1982. Czechoslovakia. Directed by Věra Chytilová. Screenplay by Chytilová, Joseph Silhavý. With Bolek Polívka, Dagmar Bláhová, Jana Synková. North American premiere. Courtesy Janus Films. In Czech, with English subtitles. 101 min.

Věra Chytilová, the most prominent female director the Czech New Wave and one of its most uncompromising voices, crafts a biting social satire about a shaggy, idealistic young man who quits university to become a train engineer in a small mountain town. As played in a star-making performance by the brilliant mime Boleslav Polívka, Honza embarks on a search for authenticity that brings him into head-on conflict with small-town hypocrisy, bureaucratic absurdity, and romantic entanglements with three very different women. When his train becomes trapped in an avalanche, the physical calamity mirrors the moral chaos within. Shot under difficult conditions with frequent interference from Communist authorities, the film showcases Chytilová’s signature blend of formal experimentation, absurdist slapstick, and sharp social commentary.

4K digital restoration carried out by Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in collaboration with the Národní filmový archiv, Prague and the Czech Film Fund in UPP and Soundsquare, with funding by Mrs. Milada Kučerová and Mr. Eduard Kučera.

Et j'aime à la fureur (Flickering Ghosts of Loves Gone By). 2021. France. Written and directed by André Bonzel. Written and directed by André Bonzel. With Bonzel, Anna Bonzel, Raymond Expedit-Bonzel. New York premiere. DCP. Courtesy Janus Films. In French, with English subtitles. 96 min.

From André Bonzel, co-director of the audacious Man Bites Dog (1992), comes this haunting meditation on love, memory, and the tactile power of cinema. Bonzel draws from a vast archive of amateur films—scenes of courtship, marriage, and domestic life captured on Super 8 and 16mm between the 1920s and 1970s by ordinary people. These flickering fragments of forgotten romances are woven together into a bittersweet reflection on the ephemeral nature of both love and celluloid. In restoring and reanimating these intimate moments, Bonzel creates not just a history of amateur filmmaking but a deeply moving exploration of how we preserve—or attempt to preserve—the most precious moments of our lives.

Sigh. I see that MoMA has a new restoration of Borzage's Seventh Heaven premiering next month. If Criterion wants to impress us with whatever sway it allegedly has with Disney, the ball is in its court.

Thanks!

I am going to hold out for a little while, though, since I bought the StudioCanal 4K of Le Cercle Rouge a few years back and then found out later that Criterion were releasing it with region A extras.

I have them all as well, but you forgot to mention the awesome 12+ hour film Out 1 Blu-ray released by the generous Carlotta films (region free).

I do not think anyone would have a good argument against as soon as possible 4k release of La Belle Noiseuse

Yep, I also own Out1. I bought it when it first came out and before it went out of print. I would take any Rivette’s in 4K, even the ones without nudity in it. But I would also like to own the rest of his filmography that hasn’t made it to Blu with English subtitles.

I sooooo want this movie! And Street Angel and Lucky Star. All from the end of the silent era and all with Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell. This trio of movies is absolutely my favorite work by Borzage and some of my favorite silent films -- poignant and gorgeous. There are decent, region-free French versions of these films, but new restoration and supplements in English would be awesome.

Film Forum's January to March 2025 repertory schedule (PDF) is now up. Lots of great programs as usual. The most notable as far as Criterion goes are Luis Buñuel's Él (aka This Strange Passion) (1953) and Godard's A Woman Is a Woman (1961), both from new 4K restorations. There's also a huge retrospective on René Clair, with over 20 of his films included. Janus is among the contributors credited. One more that I could see going to Criterion is Frank Perry's Play it as it Lays (1972), also from a new 4K restoration.
