Not sure why Shout would sublicense those two hot titles after spending a big sum of the catalogue in the first place. I know I wouldn’t if I were them.

Yeah, there's no way they would. The Woo titles will undoubtedly be the biggest moneymakers from the deal so they'll be releasing those themselves for sure.

Shout! would almost certainly put out better releases for those at this point.

Maybe seven years ago they wouldn't, but now? Absolutely.

I mean FFS, Criterion won't even include more than one commentary track per film these days! Meanwhile, Shout's upcoming release of SICK has three of them.

Exactly these are Shout’s! titles now not Criterion’s they obviously have big plans for these titles. Obviously though they wouldn’t sub-license the big titles from John Woo to Criterion no way Jose, and honestly like I wouldn’t either.

They aren't sublicensing these out to any of the US labels. If they license them out to Arrow it would be UK-only.

I was looking at ordering Love Unto Waste from 88 with some points, but I noticed this is on the Criterion Channel with Janus logo playing before. Has there been any hints at this getting a disc release, and if so, when?

If it has the Janus logo beforehand then it absolutely will get a Criterion at some point, unless they somehow lose the rights.

Here's the thing, though: the 88 Films release will certainly be superior, like their releases usually are.

Not necessarily. There are hundreds of titles on streaming with Janus logos that may not ever get a physical Criterion release.

As for 88's release. It looks to be completely barebones besides a stills gallery, so if/when Criterion does release it, it'll certainly be the better of the two in terms of supplements. There are also recent instances where Criterion has been superior to the UK counterpart, like with their recent release of Eastern Condors. Additional work was done to the same master Eureka used, resulting in much better PQ.

That's a rare instance though, but even then, I didn't have any issues with the color grading of the Eureka when I watched it, and it's an FiM encode! (Still was always going to double dip on that one regardless.)

Interesting that 88 made that release barebones, though I can't imagine Criterion would produce too many new extras for it, either.

Another rare instance where Criterion beats the UK counterpart is PAPER MOON, but that's only because Eureka had to work with a dated, studio-licensed master, while Criterion was able to undergo a brand new 4K restoration.

I really hope Criterion or Arrow gets a hold of STRANGE DAYS (1995) for a 4K this year...

Universal has the UK rights so Arrow putting it out in the UK is not out of the realm of possibility.

With The Killer and Hard Boiled now being owned by Shout! Factory. I don't really think I have anything that I really want atp.

The stuff I want to see (But I don't see it getting released anytime soon):
- Kon Ichikawa movies (A Kohsuke Kindaichi boxset + Obayashi's The Adventures of Kohsuke Kindaichi as a bonus)
- Ulrike Ottinger movies
- Pre-Shiri Korean movies (Criterion collaborating with the Korean Film Archive)

I would take all of those, and if I may add to that list:

The Wedding March (1928)
Captain Blood (1935 and possibly 1924)
Ruggles of Red Gap (1935)
Any blu-less Harold Lloyd
Chaplin First Nationals

I'm admittedly not feeling anything this go-round. The last spine is 1256, which means we're not going to hit a significant number in April. (Unless Criterion does 44 titles in one month, and I'd absolutely die.)

And now I can finally cross The Killer and Hard Boiled off the list, since they'll likely be coming from Shout at some point soon.

I guess the big ones I want are:

-More Kurosawa (more Japanese cinema in general), Scorsese, Kubrick, Lynch, and P&P
-Brazil
-Hairspray (so that we can get the ball rolling to Desperate Living)
-Ryan's Daughter
-The Devils
-Captain Blood
-Greed
-Pépé le Moko
-King Kong 4K
-The Unbearable Lightness Of Being
-Chungking Express 4K (with a normal transfer though, not the one from the WKW set)
-More upgrades from DVD, LD, and Eclipse
-Something from Disney
-Hawaii

The Wedding March (all Stroheim, really) and both cuts of Captain Blood are long overdue. Between the Stroheim movies all having weak discs or no discs, and both CBs having finished restorations, usually that means Criterion has them and is just taking forever to do them.

I know they sometimes spend months or years on movies at Criterion, but sometimes I'm forced to wonder just what the actual hell is taking so long.

Brazil 4K, probably several Hitchcocks, and I Know Where I'm Going all seem definite for this year.

I'm not sure what the hold-up on The Wedding March is as there is a 4K restoration done by Paramount in conjunction with the Library of Congress, and that has played at a couple film festivals already. If it's a matter of music, the film has a couple pre-recorded scores - the original 1928 disc and the 1987 Gaylord Carter Wurlitzer scores should sync with little to no issue with the 1928 release version, and the 1990s Carl Davis score syncs with Stroheim's 1950s recut. What is ironic is that Kino wanted to release this film ca. 2017-2018. If Kino had been allowed to, that release now would likely be OOP, and the film would be available to Criterion. Instead, we wait and see the film neglected.

As evidenced by IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, the only way a CHUNGKING EXPRESS 4K will happen is if it is the controversial L'Immagine Ritrovata restoration that WKW prefers.

That said, purely based on screencaps I've seen (have the set but have not watched any of the discs yet, though I ended up buying the 2012 ITMFL Criterion, swapped the discs, and sold off the 4K remastered World of WKW disc in the 2012 case), only ITMFL looks actively bad IMO, but I also have yet to see any of the 4K restorations in full.

Brazil is my second favorite film so would love a 4K UHD upgrade. I also want One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, regardless of who releases it. Make it happen.
