Wow, there are some young members here. 1991 was the year Terminator 2 came out. I still remember buying that on laserdisc later that year. My movie collection was already in full swing.

I guess it was given a limited release in the states on Christmas.
I hadn't heard about it until just now when I was going through the list of films of 2010 on wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Illusionist_(2010_film)
It played at MIFF last year but I missed it. I've been looking for a way to see it for about a month but haven't come up with any way of seeing it yet. In desperation I pre-ordered the French Blu-ray but it's not out for another couple of months, so hopefully I can catch it before then.

I'm a big Lynch fan and love 'Twin Peaks' but I find 'Fire Walk with Me' a truly bad Lynch work along with 'Inland Empire'

'Fire' is meant to be watched after the series anyway, so make sure you watch the series from the pilot first otherwise it will ruin the plot points of season 1, and may ruin the entire experience.

IMHO Twin Peaks has held up well. Things go off the rails a bit in season two, but as frustrating as it was watching that unfold week to week, when viewed as a whole it plays out pretty well and it's still stunning to think that this was on prime-time, major network American TV in the late 80s/early 90s (and initially quite a big hit!). The final episode is a stomach-churning, mind-bending work of art. Some great cameos, too, including a pre-X-Files David Duchovny. It was a fantastic show and 20 years later LOST is the only show to remotely approach it.

Don't use Fire Walk With Me as a taster - watch a few episodes of the series instead.

A remastered Criterion BD set would be amazing. The current DVD set is serviceable but the PQ is pretty poor. If they can do Berlin Alexanderplatz (which I'm actually in the middle of watching this week), maybe Twin Peaks isn't impossible.
The final episode is one of the most upsetting things that I have watched. I love Twin Peaks and I have to say, although the second season goes astray from the first, every time I rewatch it, I like it even better.

If anyone is going to check out the pilot, make sure you get the right version. They released a longer, TV-movie style version in England (if I remember correctly), which gives away a lot of details that you don't want to know about if you plan on watching the whole series.

David Lynch is the master at creating a feeling of dread. I used to LOVE Fire walk with me, and I watched it many times in my youth (fun film to quote) but one day I was watching it and something in my brain just 'clicked' and I found it to seriously be the most terrifying movie I have ever seen!

Watching Twin Peaks feels like you are caught in the worst nightmare you have ever had and cannot wake up. It nearly gives me an anxiety attack to think about being forced to watch it now!!! Scares the crap out of me!!!

There is a scene in Mulholland drive is creepy/scary too. I totally cannot watch it either. It starts out in a diner with two guys talking at a table. Then goes outside and around the corner to a dumpster and a homeless person comes out from behind the dumpster...I know that doesn't sound scary, and even knowing what it going on, it still scares me!

Creepy, creepy movies...oddly enough I didn't find Eraserhead to have that same surreal nightmare quality.

Someone posted packaging pictures for The Social Network in the slipcover thread, and people have been talking bout how they styled this release after Criterion.

I wonder if Criterion was approached on potentially releasing this.

Oh, how I love David Fincher. Although not a Criterion, still a Day One buy from me. Can't wait for Fincher to receive his very first Oscar in the upcoming months too.

Yeah very Criterion-esque, no booklet though, that would be the icing on the cake. Too bad, this is a much more deserving picture of a criterion (even if it was in name only) than Ben Button....... but lets not go there

That's where I first saw it. And, before it was ever released on DVD I had a bootleg copy that included the longer version. I always hated having to stop it early to avoid the details, even though I had seen the full series several times.

I actually really like Fire Walk with Me. In my mind it is an important part of the Twin Peaks story. Plus, David Bowie is great.

in regards to the casting in "fwwm", i read that Lara Flynn Boyle (Donna) and Sherrilyn Fenn (Audrey) refused to come back and do the movie. Kyle Machlachlan (Agent Cooper) apparently didn't want to either, afraid of being typecast, but was convinced to come do a small part in it.

I just watched Cronos tonight. I already saw it before, but this viewing really solidified it as a truly excellent film in the Criterion collection. The PQ was great, and I also love all the extras on it. I just really love Del Toro's movies, but I think we can all agree that nothing from him will top Pan's Labyrinth.

Why? Did he decide to stop making movies?

Watched For All Mankind and The Red Shoes tonight. I loved For All Mankind. I didn't really know what to expect, but something really resonated. Fantastic.

I knew The Red Shoes would be great, so not really a discovery. I like blind buying these Criterions.

No, but Pan's Labyrinth is too good for him to make something that will beat it.

Yeah, the packaging doesn't look Criterion (they don't have a monopoly on digipacks), but the disc artwork is telling...

Never say never. That's no different than the people who go year in and year out proclaiming the current critically acclaimed blockbuster as the "greatest" movie ever.
