Downhill Racer is a great movie! Gorgeous scenery and Gene is excellent as Robert Redford's coach. Redford is very good as well.

I have bought 2 copies of 1983's Burroughs and both had a disc & booklet for The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant inside the packaging. :{

Oh dear...

Email the Mulvaney account?

I believe you have me stumped on this one.

Did you buy them at the same place?

That's what I was thinking, just sent an email off.

I got the first in a B&N sale, it was actually July 2023 now that I look back but it took me a long time to open. Just got another off Amazon and same issue unfortunately. Definitely a surprise, ha...

I have a whole stack of discs I really need to open. For a while I used to have everything open in 24 hours, just to check them. Now things are so screwed up that I wind up with dozens to check at once.

Worst yet a lot of them were doubles from VS where they have no return policy (which I didn't find out until I attempted to return them). Made a killing on eBay, but it was still a royal pain. (Also, a lot of them were "Limit * copies" titles, so I don't know how I wound up with between 2 and 6 of each. )

My suggestion would be if there's anything you're planning on keeping, and anything you're not planning on keeping sealed, open them all and check them all. I found out about my one broken Criterion disc within a few days, but I still can't figure out what's wrong with it. Hopefully this is the only problem though, since replacing discs nowadays is a pain.

And I'd hold off on buying that movie for now, since it clearly affects multiple batches of the product.

Very true and I feel like deep down I always know I should be doing this lol, I just like keeping them wrapped so I can open when I'm about to watch it. However, just about every issue I've ever had (usually damage), I miss because I don't open in time to do anything about...

Now I've started opening them all, and of course it makes me want to watch everything immediately. Just never enough time in the day!

Have you watched the video? The majority of his picks are Blu-ray. I assume some of the DVD picks are just him grabbing the fim to talk about it without really thinking to select which format off the shelf.

Yeah I watched it. Around 1:30 with Andrei Rublev he says “although I believe this is a blu-ray,” which implied to me that’s not the format he wanted. Also from what I could see nearly everything he gets is a DVD besides maybe the blu-ray exclusive box sets at the end?

I'm pretty sure he says that about Andrei Rublev because he specifically lost the DVD version of it in the fire he talked about earlier in the video, so he's simply making the distinction that it's not an exact 1:1 replacement for what he lost.

He also picked out the BD for

Salo
Bergman Island (which he says he already owns)
The Mother and the Wh0Re (4K + Blu-ray even)
Pasolini 101
WKW set
The Dekalog

Also, I can't fully tell, but the dimensions for Death in Venice and The Damned looked more like a BD to me too. It just didn't look as tall or narrow as DVD's he holds up, but he moves around fairly quickly so I can't definitively say.

And finally, if you look at the Polaroid pic taken of him during his visit, he holds up a bunch of other Blu-ray releases, which apparently didn't make the final cut for the video.

I haven't been able to see The Brutalist yet, but I loooved Vox Lux and his picks here have me even more excited to get to TB. Any friend of Marketa Lazarova is a friend of mine.

It makes me wonder with the announcement of Bunuel's El if this was part of that project that Guillermo Del Toro did in restoring Bunuel's Mexican films. I remember him tweeting something about this years ago and we got no news about it afterwards. I hope to see more Bunuel films from this era (Like Los Olvidados)

Yeah I didn’t hear the Rublev thing that way since he’d already described that it was the earlier edition that he lost, so obviously not an exact copy. Anyway it’s no big deal, but strange that out of the 9 editions that he’s shown taking that are available on DVD, he takes the DVD format of five of them (The Leopard, Death in Venice, The Damned, Marketa Lazerová, and The Ascent). And it does show him bag the DVDs, so it wouldn’t seem like he’s just picking them with no regard to format to discuss them, unlike what he does with Bergman Island, saying he owns it already (and, to be perhaps overly technical, we don’t know the format he owns it on).

I’d be utterly crestfallen if I was allowed in the Criterion Closet, and I accidentally came out with only DVD’s instead of the blu’s!
