So we already know this is getting announced for June, but in light of the ANORA sweep (!!!!!!) at the Oscars, I'm also gonna go ahead and predict STARLET. And of course, another OOP Kino MGM 4K title.

Vermiglio was released digitally today in 4K.

It'll probably locked to a BD Janus Contemporaries release, though, just like Anselm.

I'd like to finally see a BD and UHD for Beautiful Thing, which has been on the channel on and off for a couple years now. Would be a perfect and timely June release.

At this point, as long as it doesn't have an existing Blu-ray, I'll take it as somewhat of a win even if it's film that don't interest me. I've not seen Beautiful Thing, but hope it happens one day!

Alice Wu's Saving Face is planned for June (per her Instagram) and Zeinabu irene Davis' Compensation is planned for August. So there are two new to Blu-ray titles (I think it is a disc debut for Compensation) in the near future.

Well that's something. I'm hoping Flow is a June title as I have been arguing almost daily with my wife who wants to show it to my daughter NOW, but I want the first experience of to film to be on disc for us. I've also been fighting my own internal struggle to watch Anora, but waiting for the Criterion disc.

I'm really hoping Cyrano is near, but after them releasing The Musketeer films I think that one might be a aways off. Maybe Kenji Misumi's films for a boxset in July or November?

I, too, would love to see Criterion favoring daring, experimental films, as well as newer, independent films, since many of them are currently either direct-to-streaming or just fall through the cracks.

Anora is one of the lowest-budgeted ($6 million) and lowest-grossing ($51 million) Best Picture-winners in years. Those numbers unadjusted haven't been seen in decades, and after adjustment it's one of the lowest-budgeted and lowest-grossing ever. Aside from Sean Baker, who is solid but bubbled under the radar for years, and Mikey Madison, who had several good performances but for whom this was her big break, none of the names were known at all.

This is one of the first indie films to win in years.

Compare this to last year's winner, the highly-budget, highly-grossing, absolutely stacked in terms of cast and crew Oppenheimer. Anora climbed the same mountain, with much less money and much less big names.

I'm happy to see Anora get the praise it deserves, and I hope Hollywood, the general public, the Academy, and the boutiques continue to show low-budget and indie films the praise they deserve.
I am going to be rewatching Heavens Gate on Blu-Ray tomorrow looking forward to watching the entire 3 hour cut it’ll be exciting I’ve seen some of the film before when they showed it on AMC many years ago, and don’t understand why people didn’t like this movie. I think it’s very underrated, and unappreciated that I’m glad more and more people are becoming fans of a nice cult classic western if you will yet there’s still some people that still don’t like this film I personally don’t get it.

Pretty excited to pick up Ańora in April plus Thief, and The Wages of Fear

If you've never seen it, I highly suggest you watch The Deer Hunter. It's a truly beautiful film, and one of the few Best Picture winners that's actually underrated. Shout has a great 4K (albeit with lossy sound), and StudioCanal has a 4K too, but I honestly don't own it.

What irks me about the Chaplin releases is that they don't have the OG versions of the movies in there, only the rerelease versions. And most if not all of the OG versions exist. And I think some of the OG versions have no other home video releases.

I know Criterion believes directors' wishes top everything, and 99% of the time that works out great, but it's times like these when it doesn't exactly work out that good.

I'm afraid to say this, but I hope it's not Killer's Kiss, The Killing, or Paths Of Glory.

One, the 4Ks from Kino are great for now.

Two, those who have the old Blu-rays, DVDs, or even older copies are likely willing to make do with them in exchange for getting, say, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, Lolita, Eyes Wide Shut, or another Kubrick film that either has no 4K or a screwed-up one.

Three, an official Kubrick account advertised the 4K as being for sale a while ago, which was likely prepared for the day the 4K actually went on sale, and it accidentally got leaked. I highly doubt anyone wants one of the Kino-released Kubrick films to get a redux like that.

Sean Baker seems to be so passionate about Criterion and wanting a great presentation that it seems a shame to not watch it on that disc first, assuming one hasn't seen it in the theater first.

(I also like that Baker is passionate about the theatrical viewing experience, but he adores a great physical disc presentation. Very different from, say, Tarantino.)

Still waiting for some proof Tarantino hates discs. He literally oversaw Pulp Fiction from the neg leaving the cans to the discs going in boxes.

I think Tarantino enjoys physical media, but it's not a priority for him. He was going to start some sort of label with Sony, but it never happened, but did help on all those Miramax VHS releases. I think it seems like priority is family for him right now and while he's still very passionate about movies, I don't think he cares that much about contributing to physical releases.

I don't think he HATES discs, though he's clearly not as enamored of them as he was in the days of LD. But he has said he doesn't like 4k because he thinks it'll stop people from going to the theater, and he has said on his podcast - a bunch of times! - that his ideal format is VHS, including for film preservation. This is someone who prefers the film experience NOT to be pristine, and he's spoken of his love of, like, film damage and wear.

(I would also point to him on the Late Show in 2021 calling TV and video a "disposable experience." Baker, OTOH, said in March that we're living in a golden age of physical media with all the restorations and the passionate people working on them. That's the difference.)

I prefer Werner Herzog's approach, who likes having his films on Blu-ray, saying himself they make (decades) old movies look like having been recently shot.
That's more in line with Sean Baker.

Flicker Alley just added The King of Kings to their site for an April 15th date. Criterion's website shows their DVD as currently unavailable, but seems like there's nothing on their edition that isn't on the Flicker Alley edition besides different scores. So, there's one less Criterion DVD to wait for an upgrade on.

What stops me from going to the theater is the new movies usually suck, and there's no theaters playing classics in my area. My arthouse/indie theater - The Ritz/Carmike in Voorhees, NJ - closed ages ago, and there's no place to go to see any film older than a few months old. That's why I don't go to the theater.

They rarely even play the movies that are good around here. With the exception of A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked, the other seven Best Picture nominees didn't play at any theater in my area. My theaters have 12, 14, 16, 16, and 24 screens - what were the other screens reserved for?

Tarantino can still do physical media, and I wish he would. And if his films hit theaters in my area - especially The Whole Bloody Affair - I'd be first in line to see them.

4K, when properly done, is the closest thing to a pristine film print, but it's nowhere near the same thing. I'd still go to theaters if they had something to offer.
