Yeah, either that, or perhaps even a week later when Night Moves comes out.

I'd rather we not get a 4K upgrade for Tokyo Drifter for a bit because well, it already looks so damn good on BD!

I'd rather we get some other Suzuki films first like Gate of Flesh, Youth of the Beast, etc. With that being said expect Tokyo Drifter on 4K this year!

At this point unless it has a 4K scan, I can't see Criterion putting out a Japanese film in an older master unless it's a special feature.

I'm trying to find out which films that Criterion has the rights to that are Japanese with 4K scans that DON'T have Blu-rays.

Kenji Misumi's Sword trilogy
Red Beard
Stray Dog
The Bad Sleep Well
Burmese Harp
Fires on Plains
Profound Desires of the Gods

That's all I know for sure, but I'm almost positive there is more.

I didn't get it because I haven't seen the movie, but they have Night Moves at the mobile closet right now if anyone is heading down there! Also got Thief 4k in there

Carrie Coon's closet picture from the 19th of last month shows her holding a copy of Godzilla vs Biollante, a full month before street date.

So.... Just curious if there is anyone around who knows the actual "Rules" for when the Criterion 50%-Off Sale is? It's February or March, right? Anyone?

I think it will happen this year, but might be towards the end of the year. Now, because I said this we probably won't see a release until 2027.

I was in my local used store and I saw someone had turned in over 500 Criterion dvd/blus for pricing. I was in awe of the stacks of dvds. I was also a little sad because it made me think that someone needed to sell their collection to make money or that someone had passed n the family was selling the collection.

I work at a library and we got someone’s huge and carefully curated collection of CC discs a few weeks ago (DVDs mostly, a few Blus). From what I gathered they had passed and their parents were donating their stuff. Quite sad but fortuitously, it was the day I onboarded a new part-timer who is a film graduate and we geeked out over all the stuff, and were able to add lots of it to our circulating collection to share with the whole state, so I hope that’s an eventuality the guy or gal would’ve approved of.

I'm not the biggest fan of Gate of Flesh. The film, for me, is more of a historically/culturally significant film where I see that film in terms of its influence more than its entertainment value.

Youth of the Beast I would definitely love to see but the same thing with Tokyo Drifter, there is a Blu-ray that looks beautiful on its own. I sincerely hope this is the next film that Nikkatsu restores.

I think the only remaining major Suzuki titles that haven't been restored yet are Carmen from Kawachi and Kanto Wanderer. Pistol Opera seems to be out of the picture as Radiance mentioned the current remaster is not of good quality and probably they wouldn't have enough money to restore that film and get their money back for it. I wonder if there would be any release for Princess Raccoon though.

Also hoping to see a re-release of the Arrow Suzuki titles. A New Wind Over the Mountain Pass has one of my favorite characters from his works (
[Show spoiler]Old struggling magician who basically is trying to perform death defying magic tricks while facing a kind of philosophical burden
). That character resonated with me for whatever reason in a way very few characters have done.

In conclusion, I would love to see more Suzuki titles (And also more of Shindo and Naruse perhaps. I think Takamine should definitely get more attention here in the States and Twenty Four Eyes is undoubtedly one of the most influential films in Japanese culture and is one of my all time favorites).

Pretty crazy that we have most of Suzuki's films on Blu-ray in you include all regions. Youth of the Beast in the US is probably my most wanted as well as The Flowers and the Angry Waves. I wouldn't be surprised if Radiance gets Kanto Wanderer at some point.

I'm in the process of planning my own will now (too many shitty people in the family for me to just put it off), and I'm wondering what to do with my collection. The people I'd leave it to likely don't want it. The archives would want some but not all of it. The studios could use a lot of it, but they'd likely just sit on it.

And the people who'd want my stuff most of all, my family, either would want to throw it away so I wouldn't have it in life, (ie, less time with my movies = more time with them, or so they think), throw it away when I'm dead because they think it's worthless, or sell it so they could make a quick buck if someone who knew what it was worth got involved.

So...I want my stuff to go to the right people or entity when I'm gone. The final tally will be somewhere in the range of 40-50 thousand items, comprising a history of film, television, news, history, and the world as a whole. I don't want that to wind up in a landfill or on someone's eBay page when I'm dead. I want that stuff to be around for decades if not centuries after I am.

Maybe a university library in your vicinity? There’s also an organization called the Media Preservation Foundation, which I’ve never been to but is in my neck of the woods. (Also maybe the Association of Moving Picture Archivists?)

What are the chances Criterion re-release that Bruce Lee boxset but in 4K? I've been waffling between buying the Arrow 4Ks or just waiting for a 4K version of the US set. Ideally, I would've liked to have bought the Arrow boxset, but it's astronomical in price right now from secondhand sellers. It's amazing that there are multiple 4Ks from Britain, France, Spain, and Japan, but the US market still doesn't have most of his films in 4K. I really like the Criterion packaging too for the blu-ray set, but I just know if I buy it, they will announce a 4K version.

I'll have to see about that. Archive.org is an option. One of my heroes, though I sadly never knew her in life, is Marion Stokes, who left literally 50 years worth of recording tapes to Archive, which had almost every moment in Philly's TV history on them. I'd love to do something like that.

Then again, I don't know what Archive will do with 15 copies of 101 Dalmatians that I bought when I fell for that whole Black Diamond bollocks, so I'll have to solve that problem too.

I'd double dip on both if they're cheap enough. If you can snag both for $100 combined, get them. Then, when you have time, double-dip on the various older copies of ETD, since few of the special features were carried over to the Criterion and Arrow releases.

Holy Digipack! They can't use that damn thing again! When I unboxed that for the first time, there were several "WTFs" dropped as I wrangled with that thing. A seven-disc 4K-only set would likely be Criterion's first time doing that thing. (That's also my one and only gripe with Arrow, that they rarely have 4K+Blu-ray options on their releases.) And a 14-disc 4K+Blu-ray set would be insane. As is, I usually open that pack across my bed (all the way across my bed, because it's massive) to avoid dropping or breaking the case or the discs.

Nah, ain't nobody want that Digipack again.

World of Reel picked up what I said about Killers of the Flower Moon on Friday (without citing their source of course) and now the news is going semi-viral on twitter

Would be nice if seeing so many people outraged would make Apple and these other streaming companies reconsider their approach...I know it won't, but it would be nice lol
