The 1952 Best Supporting Actress Oscar, imo, should have gone to Jean Hagen for "Singin in the Rain."
The gap in quality between Hagen's comedic genius as Lina and Gloria giving us nothing is truly vast.

Whether it’s good or bad is up to you, but those screencaps have definitely been color pushed. Almost look like the 2-strip sequences from The Aviator.

I love Gloria and I love "The Bad and the Beautiful," but I fail to see what Oscar voters saw in her performance that year. She's fine; but she's not even the best person in that film. If I were to nominate anyone from "The Bad and the Beautiful," it'd be Lana--she was fantastic in that movie.

[Show spoiler]Hopefully within the next 10 years.
Actually, the Imprint box leads me to believe we'll have a Criterion edition within the next year.

I would agree re: the art for "Midnight." I'm not crazy about it either. If I didn't know who was in the film, I'm not sure that I would have recognized John Barrymore, Claudette Colbert, and Don Ameche. In this case, I think the original poster art would have been preferable. Sometimes I wish that Criterion did what some other labels do, like Flicker Alley, where they have reversible covers. I don't think Criterion's cover is as bad as the "Cluny Brown" cover; but it's not that much better.

Interested in just Midnight from today's Criterion US announcements (and thanks MifuneFan for the indirect, helpful reminder about it being St. Patrick's Day next Monday (had forgotten).

I’m ecstatic about Brazil getting 4K and a beautiful new regrade. I’ve always had issues with the previous release being too blue and bland looking. Previews of new grade look perfect!

Also very pleased with how Sorcerer looks.

If they do, I’d imagine The Wedding Banquet would blow closer to the release of the remake. But I also say hi because I spent a bit too much importing the Father Trilogy release with them.

My most wanted Ang Lee from them is them or honestly anyone to do a new restoration of The Ice Storm!

I'd like to know exactly what movie he said that about. Because even though 90% of my movies are tapes, and most of the movies I watch are on tape, there's maybe 10-20 movies total where I can honestly say the tape looks better than the Blu-ray/4K. And most of those 10-20 tapes aren't that good, but the discs are simply dreadful. (T2, True Lies, the LOTR movies, etc.)

I also can't find proof that he hates 4K. Even though people say "everyone knows he hates 4K, he says all the time how he hates 4K"...where does everyone know this? Where does he always say this?

I went back to the used store to buy some Criterions and the person pricing them had to be smoking some bad crack. The dvds were priced between $25 and $40 and the few blurays they put out were over $50. So needless to say I didn't buy any.

There isn’t, afaik. I do think he prefers film being seen on film, though. There is a clip on Fallon or similar late night tv where he was being interviewed and they had a copy of OUATIH on 4k, and they both were like “I didn’t know dvds came in black”, but that’s the closest I’ve seen. But as far as I’m concerned it’s as baseless as people saying PTA hates 4k.

I don't know all the special features on Brazil, so I'll get the 4K, which likely contains both Blu-ray discs from before. It also contains the 142-minute director's cut and the 94-minute "Love Conquers All" cut.

If there's any extra features on the 2005 DVD and the laserdisc, I'll get them too.

And eventually, I'll pick up the Universal Blu-ray, which even though it's been waxed to all hell, it's still the best copy of the 132-minute theatrical cut.

So...just the Uni Blu and the 4K gets me 99% of the way there.

IIRC, he said it about Dark Star, though I’m not absolutely positive.

Here’s where he called all 4k “television”, whether shown in a theater or not. It’s probably the root of most of these stories.

I really hate this person right now.

As someone who regards animals as my best friends, people who hurt animals for any reason are just lower than all others. For her to do this just for her stupid TikTok video, it shows what a scumbag she is. (I considered many other words, but between the fact that my mouth has got me banned before, and the fact that the site has a language filter, I settled on "scumbag".)

People like that make me absolutely furious that Hell isn't real. Prison isn't long enough or hard enough for someone who would literally rip a child away from their parent, whether human or non-human.

Don't know much about a regrade, but nothing looked overly blue on the old transfer to me.

It seemed like it was intentionally bland, intentionally sterile, much like the world Sam was forced to live in.

And for anyone who has any older copies of Sorcerer (tape, LD, DVD), I'd love to see some A/B comparisons with the Blu-ray. And when the 4K and remastered Blu come out, some comparisons between both discs and the old disc would be nice too.

If there were any OOP stuff, $25-$40 for a DVD and $50+ for a Blu-ray would be a discount...sadly.

John Carpenter's Dark Star?

For a 16mm film, and for a Blu-ray sourced from a 35mm blow-up, it looks pretty damn good to me. It doesn't stack up against, say, the 4K of The ten Commandments, but for what it is I think the disc of Dark Star is good.

He saw the 4K transfer of A Fistful Of Dollars and that's where he concluded that 4K sucks?

Nothing was out of print that I could tell. The Rose on dvd was priced at $35 and you can order that on Amazon for $23 on dvd or blu for $26. This place is hit or miss on pricing. Sometimes you can find deals but most of the time everything is over priced.

I agree! But he and Avary spent time waxing rhapsodically on the VHS on their podcast.

I compared the new 4K clip on Criterion website against the original Blu-ray, and that’s what makes the blueness much more evident.
