Really? Not even 8 1/2 and Breathless? I have to wonder who these "great directors" are that you refer to if they don't know the influence of these two films.

By great directors I mean Hitchcock, Spielberg, Scorsese, Cameron, Cronenberg, Cassavetes, Lynch, Jackson and Kubrick. I seen a lot of documentaries and commentaries and those 2 movies are the only ones I ever heard mentioned.

Well there you go. Just because you never heard of it doesn't mean that the films aren't huge influences on the work of other directors.

Looks like a great release for fans of the film, too bad I haven't seen it.

Admittedly, posts like these annoy me ("Tell me what to buy!"). Nonetheless, I'd like to know what you guys think of this. Maybe some of you have multiple sets and can compare. B&N's got a pretty good sale going on right now. Coupled with a $25 gift card I got for X-Mas, I'm trying to decide between:

Alien Anthology - $55.64 ($30.64 after gift card) - $70 on Amazon/$44 on Amazon/UK
American Lost & Found BBS Criterion - $49.67 ($24.67 after gift card) $90 on Amazon
Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection DVD Set - $47.69 ($22.69 after gift card) $98 on Amaz

I'm torn between getting the set I want the most "Alien" and getting the set that's the best current deal (one of the other 2). America Lost & Found doesn't interest me much on the surface, but I'd love to get a look at all the extras...and it's a great deal. Hitchcock collection...I'd love it on Blu, but I don't see it coming for a long time.

Any thoughts?

Get the movie, that will bring you (the collector) the most satisfaction from a viewing perspective, not because of the price.

Why buy something you're not really interested in? Between the two, the BBS Set is about $6 cheaper so there's really not much savings for you. Just buy the one you want the most.

Exactly. Alien set. I'm sure there will be another good deal on the BBS set in the future.

1. The Alien Anthology and BBS set are both equally great.
2. The Alien Anthology is pretty sweet, but only if you can stomach the last two films (like me).
3. The BBS set is great if you've seen most of the films already in the set, and want the extra content.
4. While the Hitchcock Masterpiece collection is fantastic (I own it), they most likely will release all the films on blu as stand alone releases before releasing the whole set, which I plan to buy them as they're released and replace the majority of them.

Given that this IS the Criterion thread I've highlighted the one I recommend the most with your current situation.

But if you asked the same question in the Alien Anthology Thread, then you probably get more responses in favor of that one. Sorry if I'm not much help, but I'd be torn with the same options.

Thanks BasicGreatGuy, sOOperdOOper, greekak229, keldons, & aggienader08! I appreciate the feedback immensely.

"BBS" set looks great, but, on the surface, the movies don't interest me. I know what classics "The Last Picture Show" and "Easy Rider" are. I've not seen them though (I have them in on my DVR external storage...have yet to watch). For some reason they don't interest me (not my types of flicks I guess). But it does look like a helluva collection, and I'm an extras/special features freak. Love the insight into the making of movies. I love Nicholson. Like Hopper a lot. I'm interested in hearing about the movies, moreso even than the movies themselves. It was an interesting time period. Also, I love my Criterion buys! ("Armageddon," "Kicking & Screaming," "Le Samourai," "Benny Buttons," "Seven Samurai," "Night Of The Hunter," "A Christmas Tale")

Value comes into it. I like the idea of getting something at a steal (even if I'm not in love with the product). If I can stretch a dollar, I could order "Alien" set on A/UK and use the coupon/gc for one of the other two. If I got "BBS" or "Hitchcock" here and "Aliens" there, the two would run $70. Not bad! If I would've pulled the trigger on the "Alien" set when it was sub-$40 on A/UK this decision would be easier!

I am leaning toward the "Alien" set on B&N. Again, I do really appreciate the feedback.

Just a thought as well. The Alien set is a much more commercial release with likely many more copies produced/ It is a lot more likely that the price on Aliens will keep dropping. Our Costco currently has it for under $50. If it's anything like the Bourne trilogy or the Die Hard pack you can expect further price drops in the near future. Im not too sure the other two sets will come down in price as quickly.

But again, it's all in what you want the most at the current time, but if Aliens is just going to sit on your shelf without viewing it might be best to hold off on it.

PS. Just checked prices at our local BestBuy
Aliens $99
Hitchcock - $139
American Lost $123

Either way you go you are getting one heck of a deal compared to what I would pay - but I'd personally go with the BBS set with those savings! I'd want the Hitch movies on blu
