They also regularly have nasty things to say about Jane Fonda, John Wayne, Robert De Niro, Mel Gibson, Robert Wagner, and many more. Doesn't seem to have affected their disk sales or, for those still alive and working, them actually getting work. The one person it may be affecting is Woody Allen, but I think his ticket and other sales were already down before all the allegations of recent years. I couldn't say if those very public allegations accelerated the trend or if his time has simply passed. My guess is both. When it comes to "canceling" it seems to be a small minority that has the loud megaphone of social media. Seems for most of those supposedly canceled people most of the audience mostly doesn't care. There will be a few days long tempest in an online teapot and then the social media furor moves on to someone else. The accounts of "canceling" seem to be greatly exaggerated. Criterion has had 35 years to release a disk based version of CYRANO DE BERGERAC (1990). Not having released it before probably has had a lot of factors, including licensing costs and availability and predicted sales volume. But obviously nothing at all to do with this week's court result. They already didn't release it! |

MEMENTO has a completed 4K DCP and the 25th anniversary is coming up so I am going to predict that for August or September.
And of course, FLOW. |

But I think you're right that the outcry over canceling is much more prevalent than the actual canceling, but it is indeed a very touchy subject with regards to legalities and censorship. And when you see the people who want to cancel others they are so strident and radical in their beliefs it's kind of scary. The pile on for Neil Gaiman for example conjured up visions of nooses and burning crosses when you read the online comments. But who is listening? Jackie Cooper called Wallace Beery the most sadistic s.o.b. who ever lived and as a child was slapped by him in the face several times, but who gives a s--t about Wallace Beery these days? A lot of this is media driven, as is mostly everything in the world now, and since we know they can't be trusted, why would we ever choose to believe those who do trust them? Wes Anderson says that Satyajit Ray's little-seen 1970 film Days and Nights in the Forest has been restored by the Film Foundation (at his recommendation) and premiering at Cannes this year, and that it's coming to Criterion.

Just pre-ordered Killer of Sheep today from Amazon
For the July Barnes and Noble sale I'll be picking up a lot of titles I missed out on, or didn't pre-order How to get Ahead In Advertising To Sleep With Anger Withnail and I The Long Good Friday Malcolm X The Wages of Fear Menace II Society 4K Seven Samurai Even as a huge Kurosawa fan I still haven't seen this film somehow even though I prefer the western remake they made in America I need to still pick this up. It has been on my Criterion to buy list since last year maybe even longer with the old Blu-Ray. Devil in a Blue Dress One False Move Yeah I'm going all out for July with a ton of African American cinema titles from Criterion as I collect a lot of African American films. A lot of African American cinema resonates with me so much despite not being black myself these films are great, and have powerful themes, and are quite emotional. Some of them stick with me quite a bit even moreso after the film ends. Last edited by Watershipdownisgood; 05-14-2025 at 09:03 PM. |

I do hate the term cancel culture, because it makes personal choices sound flippant. I prefer the term consequences. We all have to make that choice for ourselves and what that means. I don't have a hard and fast line. I still listen to Michael Jackson music. But as much as I love Hannah and her Sisters - it was my Thanksgiving movie - I can't do it because what he's alleged to be is too much in my face. But I think it's fine saying, I don't want to do business with that person. I don't criticize anyone for an individual decision; even Mia Farrow has a painfully hard time ruling out working with Polanski again any time it's brought up. Feelings are complicated. I only get ticked off when I see someone alleged to do something awful - or worse, ADMITTED it - lionized later just because they were accused. There's too much of "I support this person because they're on my team now and I don't really care what they did." That hardens my feelings and, when required, contempt. (Someone brought up Harvey Weinstein, which okay, fine, but at some point it's too broad a brush. If we boycotted based on which despicable person gave an artist money, we'd lose the Renaissance.) |

I pestered Criterion again recently with another email asking if they could possibly obtain the rights, if they haven't already and please release Kohei Oguri's 1981 film of post-world war II Japan Doro no Kawa (Muddy River) .
I discovered this film at a local repertory cinema back in the late 80's. Needless to say it hit me hard and stayed with me for the longest time. This type of film would certainly be in their wheelhouse. Sorry if I've posted this again but I think it deserves repeating. Maybe one day... fingers crossed. |

They are doing a Johnnie To series on the channel next month, curious to see if any of the new additions open with the Criterion and Janus logos

I certainly can't even begin to predict what Criterion will release, but as far as my own wishlist is concerned, this would be it:
-Top Hat 4K -Captain Blood (4K or Blu-ray) -more Harold Lloyd (4K or Blu-ray) -I Married A Witch 4K (if it happens this year, I'm certain it would be an October release) -It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World 4K (as long as it keeps the reconstructed version, even if that is only on Blu-ray) -The Gold Rush 4K (or more Charlie Chaplin on Blu-ray) -any Humphrey Bogart on 4K -To Be Or Not To Be (1942) 4K -more Cary Grant on 4K (particularly Charade) -Here Comes Mr. Jordan 4K -Gilda 4K -My Man Godfrey (1936) 4K |

Would do anything for Raise the Red Lantern to get a release! It's had a completed 4K restoration for months/years now, so the wait is driving me crazyyyy.
