But as for Bill Cosby, that one I still harbor a 98% boycott over, watching only my childhood favorite I SPY and justifying it by saying that his participation in that TV series occurred before any of the incidents reportedly started.

I jumped ship on Bryan Singer too even though he has never been formally charged. But eyewitness accounts were disgusting and sad and who needs the guy? I sold off my Blus of his X-MEN films.

Separating the art from the artist is not always easy, especially in the medium of film where they often are front and center as opposed to a writer in a distant cabin somewhere or a painter in a studio on the other side of the world. Film people come into our homes with regularity and it's much easier to hold them accountable and turn them off if given the choice.
Just wanna say a reply like this and some of the others are why I'm reminded why this forum is way better than an echo chamber like Reddit. Reading actual, nuanced responses to complicated situations with filmmakers and their art is one of the many reasons why I frequent these forums daily.

The Village

Beautiful Thing

And maybe a Kurosawa rescued from DVD hell.
In my state they let us renew online every other time. Every 10 years we have to go back in to take a new picture and do the eye test, etc.

The Village is an interesting one. Sure, it's Disney but if the director has enough clout, it could happen. It's happened before with Disney/Criterion.

Few I'd like to see since we know they have them:

Christiane F
The Brother from Another Planet
Isle of Dogs

No he didn't marry Mia Farrow, but he did definitely marry Farrows adopted step daughter, which is wrong. Not to mention super weird, and gross.

I don't much like Woody Allen movies, apart from any off-screen issues he may have. But I am also icked out by him.

Whether I'm willing to watch this or that problematic actor/writer/director is, as far as I can tell, arbitrary. I go purely on feelings, and I'm not tempted to analyze whether my judgments are rational.

I don't owe it to any particular performer or writer or director to give them a fair chance. Whether there's enough "evidence" to support an allegation is irrelevant. "Beyond a reasonable doubt" is a legal standard. If I had the power to put anyone in prison, I would hold myself to that. (And FWIW, I've been on multiple juries.) But I don't have that power, so I can think and do what I want.

Boy would I love for the films from that pricey Imprint box set devoted to Zhang Yimou and Gong Li to make it to individual 4Ks from Criterion. The price on that Imprint set never goes down much and I need those movies, especially JU DOU, in my collection! Stat!

Then what your saying is that it comes down personal choices and principles? I'm not involved in any facet of law enforcement and can take an arbitrary, detached stance on these things by choosing to ignore them all or declare aspects of it "irrelevant" or I can continue to make choices that will help apply standards to my own personal convictions and try to make myself a better person for it.

It's likely no one here on this venue is personally involved with any of these celebrities under discussion so of course our decisions regarding them are arbitrary, but those decisions or judgments (if you will) do underline important aspects of who we are and the standards of what we believe in, not just the celebrities in question.

Definitely. And I don't judge anyone for enjoying, say, a Roman Polanski movie, even if he's done monstrously criminal things and is a bad person. (If they tried to defend him as a person, that's an entirely different matter.)

Some jurisdictions consider stepparents to stepchildren "legal" incest while others define it only as blood relatives.

If we arrested and exiled anyone who displayed behavior or activity that was "super weird" and "gross," we'd all be in jail for something.

Well, I definitely agree with you that others should not be judged by our own individual set of standards and beliefs. I do get a bit huffy when people tell me their specific political beliefs, but I see that as a character flaw within myself and not something that they have necessarily provoked. As for your example with Polanski or really any public figure, if they have never been legally convicted for their transgressions I agree with you that it's not my place to assume a judgment upon anyone who still patronizes them, unless as you say they attempted to justify that person's actions.

For example, I myself do not watch any Tarkovsky movies and I think his penchant for featuring animal cruelty in his films is reprehensible, but there are whole threads on this site where he is deemed a genius and incredible artist. I tend to stay away from those threads so I am not angered and tempted to decry it all. It's not up to me to tell the world to judge him the way I do.

Woody Allen marrying his step daughter is whatever you want to call it. But it is not literal incest. Literal incest is when a person has a sexual relationship with a blood relative.

I don't believe for a moment that the allegations Mia Farrow made against Allen are true.

Mia Farrow is an amazing actress and is delight to watch on screen.

Woody Allen is one of my favorite filmmakers.

Check out my post a few above yours for the definition of "literal" or at least "legal" incest. Also, why did you type some sentences of your post twice?

I did read your post before I typed mine.
