The only soft people I see here are those who have their panties in a bunch over some discs they claim not to be interested in.

It's truly a tragedy when a label known for its wide-ranging catalog doesn't cater to customers with narrow tastes.

I don't understand. Is everyone supposed to like everything? Is everyone supposed to have the same tastes you do?
Is liking a movie somehow a "more valid" response than "not liking" a movie?

This is exactly what I'm talking about. This post reeks of arrogance, as if you're somehow a better person than those you believe might not have a taste as "broad" as yours.

I might do it sometimes too on the internet, but what are we bringing to the table when we proclaim we're displeased, some of us even quite ferociously without giving valid reasons or constructive criticism?

We just clutter topics, just like I'm doing now.

The idea of prejudice towards foreign cinema was something that I will admit: I took it from Cremildo's comment. I hadn't thought of it before, but his comment made me think of it as a real possibility.

Look at my account's history from the beginning to now, and see if I have the history of a troll. I try to be helpful in these boards. I was the one who posted the restoration notes for Sunset Boulevard in 4K, for example. Look at any other thread I'm in.
Fair enough. It's hard to know who can be trusted on public forums, those who are being sincere and those who are just looking to stir up discord. Sorry, if I jumped the gun, but Duke is a great guy and I trust his judgment. Even though I am a veteran of many forums, I still can't easily decipher trolls and socks. I tend to take people by their word. But let's move past this and continue to communicate as best we can on this venue, inherently flawed as it is. Thanks for your reply.

So I guess "King Tut" is the real sock account?

I won't quote his post which seems to do nothing but intentionally troll the thread and bait everyone.

It's just as tragic when people have to dig and dig for what they believe are buried motives behind not agreeing with someone else. You are acting like Criterion is the TEN COMMANDMENTS and anyone who expresses any conflict with them are being sinful and treasonous.

What difference does it make if someone disagrees with your tastes in movies or distributors? Why must there be hidden meanings and devious and tasteless motives for their preferences? If someone else chooses other films or film companies to pray to why do you have to insist your god is the only god?

Really, man. I know you are a good guy and we have corresponded away from the boards, but I think you're taking this a step too far and applying intimations of subversive activity where it just does not exist. We are all different people and if we all thought the same all the time Rod Serling would be narrating our lives.

Why does every forum in the history of the internet just end up with people arguing over the absolute most asinine shit? Lol

Count me in the category of someone excited that movies I like are finally getting a BD release. And I don't mind posting about being able to check out HD upgrades of highly regarded movies I haven't seen.

Saving Face for one. I've been hoping for a BD of that one for a while. I've been hearing about the Ichikawa films for years and I still haven't watched them. I'd like to watch them first at least.

Solid choice. I add my own personal endorsement for FIRES ON THE PLAIN which is one of those movies that will stick with you like a shadow in your imagination long after you watched it.

Unless you say the same thing when someone gives brief praise "without valid reasons" this is also b.s.

These two opinions are exactly the same, just on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Why would one be obligated to provide supporting evidence for an opinion in one direction and not the other?
Why should the bar be raised for criticism as compared to praise?

Because unexplained positivity is much more constructive than unexplained negativity.

How? How is one guy saying "That's great news!" offer ANYTHING "more constructive" than "that sucks"? They are both unsubstantiated personal opinions.

Because positivity tends way more to make people feel good.
Which is a nice thing, isn't it? Happier people make happier societies.
(And we're still cluttering this topic.)

It makes you 'sad' that someone on the internet isn't interested in a movie? I think my "soft ass people" comment was spot on.

When someone says something negative about a film I like, whether brief or detailed, it doesn't move the needle an inch for me. Why would that upset a normal person? In a healthy society, I'd expect maybe an equal amount of 'thumbs up' and 'thumbs down' on topics of personal taste.

Edit: I don't like the thought process behind saddling one opinion's side with a higher burden to be expressed. It seems like railroading an open forum to achieve a predetermined / desired result.

'Like' and 'dislike' are equally valid stances for individuals.

Usually when people say 'That's great news!' that means they liked the announced titles and will add one or more of them to their collection.

When people say 'That sucks' it doesn't tell me if they dislike the films, the format of choice, or the fact that Criterion got the rights to a movie they like (for whatever reason).

I'm sure you can see how 'That sucks' is a whole lot less descriptive than 'That's great news'.

No, I don't. What difference does it make that forum user BigMac4279 wants to add Criterion spine #1243 to his collection? That doesn't tell me anything.
