I bought one, Dangerous Game, and didn't like it at all. Definitely feels Criterion-esque. Not a single title so far has really interested me, only got DG because it was super cheap and I like some of Abel's films.

I'm very likely picking up A New Leaf. Looks like a great release.

I know it’s been mentioned before, and it’s trivial… but what’s going on at Criterion? I went to Barnes and Noble, for the sale, and every Criterion I wanted to buy had cover art issues - where the cover art is misaligned so much at the top that it’s ripped on the corners and damaged. And same thing at Amazon. Almost every Criterion that I receive from Amazon has these same misaligned cover art issues as well. It’s extremely frustrating that pretty much everything I’m getting is like this.

I swung by the other Barnes & Noble in my area and was able to pick up minty copies of those two 4K titles.

Badly misaligned covers seems to be an ongoing issue with Criterion. I've gotten a few where the cover was sticking out more than it should, but, fortunately, not enough to get damaged. This is why I prefer to buy my Criterions in person.

I do buy Vinegar Syndrome, but I also buy Criterion and Radiance for more "serious" works of cinema as well. Given that Cinematographe treads in that territory, there are a couple of them I would have bought if they were a bit cheaper or I could find at a discount or used. I think some of these boxy cardboard stuff for single movie releases is a bit overkill, but that's just me.

Criterion releases are pretty much right at the limit of what I'd pay for a single movie release.

It's awesome when some of the titles you're eyeing to pick up drop in price. Here's my Criterion sale haul.

Well I'm going into Barnes and Noble next week in store on Wednesday in Lone Tree, and I have my eyes on 5, or 6 titles. All of these are in store so that's good.

The Last Picture Show surprised I still don't have this in my collection
Godzilla
The Long Good Friday
Withnail and I
One False Move
Possibly the Wages of Fear if they have it there

My Lone Tree Barnes and Noble doesn't have How to Get Ahead In Advertising for some reason it's only online. Also not a single Italian Criterion Collection Film either not even the Bicycle Thieves. How does a Barnes and Noble store not have the Bicycle Thieves? It makes no sense yet my store carries some weird obscure French films I've never heard of. Still at least my store carries all of the Sean Baker films including Anora so that's a plus. I'll be buying those in November as they're not a high priority right now, but I will be getting them.

Also they don't carry much Jean Luc Godard either only Breathless which I already have. What I do hope is that I find an out of print Criterion Blu-Ray there that would be awesome.

Not buying at the moment
That Musketeers two film set
House I keep putting off buying this, but I will get to it, and it's a really crazy Haunted house horror flick from Japan. It's super weird, but awesome. I watched it on streaming a few years ago, and it was a wild ride.
Ugetsu
The Others
Girlfight I do want this it's a really darn good film, but it just isn't a high priority right now. It's also one of Michelle Rodriguez's earliest movie roles.
Brazil
Pandoras Box

For the Cinematographe releases there are standard editions of them, and they're much cheaper than the box sets. You can get a lot of them on Deep Discount for a really good price. That's what I've been doing for most of the Cinematographe titles I want.

Also Vinegar Syndrome started selling all the currently available standard editions on the site for the first time this month. In fact you can buy the standards right now on the site. The box sets take up too much space, but the standard editions are small, and take up way less space.

VS has a dedicated fan base, but most of their titles aren't the sort of films that interest me. I've picked up the LEs of Red Rock West and Little Darlings, but many of the Cinematographe titles still tend more toward VS than Criterion IMHO

They're very nice editions, and I'll probably grab A New Leaf too, but I don't expect to suddenly start buying tons of VS products.

October Predictions:

DARLING 4K*
DOG DAY AFTERNOON 4K
HAROLD LLOYD SHORTS
HUD 4K
STARLET

Aside from maybe DOG DAY AFTERNOON, I will probably be wrong about all of these.

*Some might think DARLING is coming from Lionsgate Limited, but it's an Embassy Pictures release and so I'd assume it's likely with MGM in the US, so probably Criterion.

You can get Second Sight's 4K of Scanners right now (from Orbit or Atomic Movie Store, in the U.S.)

It's encoded by Fidelity in Motion, so even if Criterion released it, it almost certainly wouldn't look as good as the Second Sight disc.
