I'll be the contrarian - for me, it's a disappointing month. No Captain Blood. No Hud. No Lubitsch titles. The Wedding March still MIA, etc. Sigh. It looks like I'll be sitting out the October flash sale as there won't be any new titles for me to pick up. With all of that said, this only applies to me as I know and can see that there are people greatly excited by today's announcement. For those people, savor the moment.

For me, I've come to accept that the Venn diagrams of what I want to see from Criterion and what Criterion actually releases don't intersect as much as they did some years back. Such is life.

It's had a completed 4K DCP for some time now, like NETWORK.

Now this is a horror themed month alright

In for almost everything jeez Louise

Eyes Without a Face 4K
Nightmare Alley 4K
A History of Violence 4K
Altered States 4K
Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me 4K

Gosh Dang I don't even own any of these films either so this is a huge win for me. Deep Crimson sounds interesting too

I mean Del Toro, Cronenberg, Franzu, and Lynch in the same month is a win win in my opinion.

Also Deep Crimson looks amazing as it's about the infamous Lonely Hearts Club Killers, and I'm always up for some crime thriller films so this one looks great. Plus more Mexican cinema is always a huge plus.

One of my favorite Criterion months of the year tied with four other months, May, August, June, and September. Sure it's mostly 4K upgrades, but I don't care the fact that most of these are actual horror films puts a big, big, smile on my face. I mean last year we only had two actual horror titles I walked with a Zombie, and The Seventh Victim the rest of the titles weren't even horror flicks, which made no sense. As besides that two film set I was only interested in Demon Pond.

I’m pretty sure Sean Baker got two in one month this year. If they want to release 10 Cronenbergs in a month I’m fine with it.

Criterion's DigiPacks are flimsy and cheaply produced (though not as dire as A24's), so I prefer whenever they use scanavo cases.

Yeah, Baker and Audiard both got two in a month this year, maybe there are even others.

Edit: Totally blanked Wes Anderson, but his films get Criterion releases by default at this point.

Yeah, they used to do it all the time. Heck, they did two Seijun Suzuki titles three times.

What a lineup! Will be grabbing five of these for sure: Nightmare Alley, Altered States, A History of Violence (one of my favorite Cronenberg's), The Shrouds, and Fire Walk With Me.

Wonder if this will this end the wild speculation that CC will release a full set of Twin Peaks seasons in 4K...

They just did that with Jacques Audiard a month ago. And Kon Ichakawa recently.

Double dips of discs I haven't even watched yet. Was really hoping for Jigoku.

Excellent line-up. Especially for Altered States and A History of Violence. Two BDs in need of upgrades. I'm getting all my William Hurt faves this year.

They've actually been doing more of these paired director releases this year from what I've noticed.

September: Two releases from Jacques Audiard (plus two solos of Wes Anderson films besides the huge box set)
August: Two releases from Kon Ichikawa
May: Two releases from Bruce Robinson
April: Two releases from Sean Baker

I'm a teensy bit surprised that Criterion didn't upgrade their version of The Devil's Backbone for this month.

Anyway, I guess we'll get Frankenstein next year.

What a month!

I'm in for:
Altered States 4K
History of Violence 4K
Nightmare Alley 4K
Eyes Without a Face 4K

I'll also now pick up the Blu of the original (and superior IMO) Nightmare Alley. As far as covers go, I love Altered States and Nightmare Alley. A History of Violence is definitely a big swing, but doesn't work for me.

The artist also did the freaky cover for Scanners. Say what you will, but he's not afraid of being alienating. (He also did the Criterion versions of The Killing and Mikey and Nicky, which aren't like either one of these. Even if I'm not there for a particular image, it's fascinating when someone tries to stretch themselves with each piece of art.
