I read the book and actually went to one of the flotation tank centers in Suburban Chicago to see what it would be like. It was a weird thing, but all I really recall is how much it hurt my neck, not having a lot of support for it lying on top of the water. It did not alter any states, just gave me a pain in the neck literally.

So for me, it was a complete strikeout: 1. I thought the book was crap. 2. I thought the movie was shite. 3. I got nothing out of trying the actual flotation meditation tank experience.

The two Stanwyck films are with Criterion and "Pursued" was released by Olive and I think re-released by Kino.
RAMROD from 1947, directed by Andre De Toth, is one of the best western noirs and has a genuine femme fatale in it! A brilliant film.

I think I blind bought Ramrod during a past BOGO Olive sale. I will need to move it to the top of my watchlist (that I maintain in my mind). I am a big fan of Joel McCrea and Veronica Lake, so this blind buy was a no brainer to me.

Make sure to come back here and report your reaction to the film or send me a PM with it. It has a tremendous cast and is so well done. The opening scenes are amazing and just thrust you right in the middle of the noir!

I dig Altered States for the same reasons I like Zardoz; they're swinging wide trying to reach a profundity they can't quite grasp, but I appreciate the effort. AS was directed by Ken Russell who never let good taste get in his way.

This is true, though AS is probably the most broadly accessible film of his career, if such a thing is even possible. There’s no overt bad guys in it, which I always find refreshing.

Yes, the upgrade from the Blu-Ray was exceptional.

September pre-orders
Flow blind buy going to watch it next month for the first time on streaming
This is Spinal Tap
High and Low 4K

October pre-orders for me at least most of them blind buys

A History of Violence
Nightmare Alley watching it on streaming first
Altered States watching it on streaming first
Deep Crimson
Eyes Without a Face

I'm finally going to watch Seven Samurai next month it's just really really long, and you have to find a day that works best, and don't plan on watching anything else that day. This is the one Kurosawa film I keep putting off over and over again.

Deep Crimson, High and Low, Fires on The Plain and Nightmare Alley remake are all first-rate and worth blind-buying.

A History of Violence and Eyes Without A face are watchable, but one time viewing experiences.

Spinal Tap is not for me.

Zardoz has something that Altered States lacks...

But Sean Connery said he didn't understand the Lord of the Rings script. Okay Boomer.

Well, to be fair to the Boomers, Will Smith didn't understand The Matrix script and passed on the film, much to the benefit of Keanu...

So I'm planning on buying even more Japanese cinema from Criterion, and here's my list, but I want to know people's thoughts on these films. Also in September I am finally going to buy some Italian Criterion titles as I still don't have any yet.

Planning on buying in October
Lady Snowblood Collection
The Sword of Doom
Cure
Finally going to pick up some more Ozu titles besides Tokyo Story possibly that Floating Weeds set
Branded to Kill and maybe even more Seijun Suzuki too
More Kenji Mizoguchi films

Lady Snowblood is an incredible film. It’s one of the big influences on Kill Bill vol 1, if you liked that then you’ll love Snowblood. The second one is ok, but not as good.

IMO both of the films on the Floating Weeds set are my least favorite of Ozu’s. They aren’t bad, but compared to everything else I’ve seen from him the story just didn’t grab me. But honestly it feels like I’m more or less in the minority there.

Cure is also fantastic, and if you like that go check out Kairo (Pulse), and also Creepy.

Would recommend Ozu's Late Spring and Autumn Afternoon before you get Floating Weeds. I loved Suzuki's Tokyo Drifter, found it a lot more emotionally gripping than Branded to Kill. Other non-Kurosawa J-titles I recommend:
Pale Flower
Three Outlaw Samurai
In the Realm of the Senses (but there are newer restorations available)
Tampopo, The Funeral

Not on Criterion, but I recommend you get Jiro on Sushi, the terrific documentary on a master Sushi maker devoted to improving his craft. It's a lot like an Ozu film.

Many Criterion titles--especially foreign language films--are available on The Criterion Channel, Criterion's streaming service at $11.99 a month. If they come from Criterion disks they usually include most, if not all, the supplements.
They won't be in 4K though, Criterion Channel doesn't currently stream 4K.

You can find out which ones are available by going to the title's disk page on the Criterion shop website--there is a very prominent banner for The Criterion Channel under the disk pricing links if the title is available on the Channel.
