So sounds like we know what the first year will pretty much be. Either way, hoping for a lot of good stuff from this line and way overdue.

The relaunch of the Eclipse news is huge news. A lot of excellent films that wouldn't usually get an individual release.

I think of Peter Becker talking about the sale of Criterion, how the pitch to him was, “What would you do if Criterion had access to capital?” I’ve been looking for those signs.

The first thing, I think, was a dramatic increase in their theatrical distribution presence - acquiring titles like The Shrouds.

The second was a real increase in things like commentaries, which we’ve been seeing all year.

This is the third real sign, I think - they’re able to bring on the staff and resources required for a third major line after Criterion proper and the former Janus Contemporaries.

I wonder if there's a chance that the previous Eclipse editions will get blu-ray upgrades too? Probably not but I guess I like to dream.

This is amazing looking forward to picking this up next year. I really did not expect the House Party films to come from Criterion, but here we are. Very excited about this, and the Eclipse news too this is great.

I think we'll probably get that early Kurosawa titles set upgraded from the old Eclipse DVD set, which just puts a big smile on my face. Also yes I will be picking up those first two Japanese sets from Eclipse that are coming to Blu-Ray too. November sounds like it's going to be an insane month like really insane, and I'm all for it. I mean House Party finally coming to Blu-Ray, an Eclipse Blu-Ray set, and whatever else Criterion has up their sleeves for November.

Criterion is killing it with the variety of African American cinema titles, and Japanese films this year. Plus a number of other big titles that also came out this year some of them for the first time on Blu-Ray.

A 4K DCP of MYSTERIOUS SKIN exists and will be screening next month. If Strand still has the rights, I wouldn't be surprised if they license it out to Criterion like they did with the Teen Apocalypse trilogy. https://www.academymuseum.org/en/pro...GgfPfv5B1EPttA

This is a very fun set! I always wondered by Maurice Chevalier was so popular, but The Smiling Lieutenant showed me -- Chevalier is cute as a button in it, he's owns the camera when he's on screen (even a 1931 camera), and Lubitsch is directing. And that's only one of the four movies in the set.

This is a great set to start the reboots.

FWIW, this set is listed as Out of Print, but we know this reissue is coming. It makes me wonder if some of the others listed that way will show up reissued on blu.

Hoping so! I honestly didn't know it went OOP until I checked a little while ago. Maybe I should sell mine. Amazon says it will pay next month's mortgage at their pricing

I was thinking the same. Janus still has rights to almost all of these, so perhaps taking the DVDs out of print could correlate with a future upgrade being planned.

Those currently out of print:
  • 3. Late Ozu
  • 6. Saura's Flamenco Trilogy (confirmed Blu-ray upgrade)
  • 8. Lubitsch Musicals (confirmed Blu-ray upgrade)
  • 10. Silent Ozu
  • 15. Hiroshi Shimizu
  • 16. Alexander Korda's Private Lives
  • 19. Chantal Akerman in the Seventies (received main line Blu-ray upgrade)
  • 23. The First Films of Akira Kurosawa
  • 25. Basil Dearden’s London Underground
  • 26. Silent Naruse
  • 29. Aki Kaurismäki’s Leningrad Cowboys
  • 34. Jean Grémillon During the Occupation

Will this pan out, we'll see... But the Ozu sets being out of print, without being mentioned here for an upgrade, is rekindling my hopes that a Complete Ozu box is in the pipeline.

Very good news about the Eclipse series. My mind was blown whenever Janus put out a retrospective and nothing became of those films. I'm glad the Kinuyo Tanaka films are confirmed so far.

https://www.janusfilms.com/film-sets/9

RE: Kiarostami - their retrospective was 30 films. If we scratch off Close-Up, the Koker Trilogy, The Wind Will Carry Us, Taste of Cherry, and 24 Frames, we're down to 23 films. So I'm curious which 6 aren't going to be included. I figured The Traveler wouldn't be as it's an extra with Close-Up, but they're including it. I assume the same will happen with The Report (included on Certified Copy).
