[QUOTE=jacobsever;4209576]I don't understand why you'd rather buy a dvd when there is a blu ray out there. People love to complain so much about everything non-Criterion, when the Studio Canal isn't as terrible as people make it out to be.

The subtitle translation is pretty shoddy though... Granted, I have the StudioCanal blu ray as well, but let's not pretend it's perfectly fine in all facets. People on these forums tend to only think of PQ, but subtitles can make or break a film's emotional impact.

On the criterion thread of a blu-ray enthusiast forum? Pssshaw!
I think the most entertaining possible thing would be for someone (myself included) to attempt a sincere and articulate treatise on how they're somehow not a nerd in spite of frequenting these parts.

In my defense, I'm a hipster. I have a beard, wear flannel, skinny jeans, Vans. I shop at Urban Outfitters, and I ride fixed gear bikes.

I do/am most of those too, except for the urban outfitters (yuck) and fixed gear enthusiasm (not hatin', just not utterly enraptured by the concept of fixed gears). I'm kind of using 'nerd' here in terms of the myopic way in which the general populice would classify criterion/bd enthusiasm, not really in an insulting/self-effacing way. I'm (we're) cool as hell obv.

On a more relevant note, HolycrapSolaris! Talk about a title I've wanted on BD from day one. For some reason when Crit first announced their move to blu I was convinced this was going to be a flagship rollout title. Better late than never.

Don't worry everyone's a nerd for something. Some people just don't want to admit it. Why should the label be limited to people who are into movies, comic books, or video games, etc.? So yeah, if you watch football religiously, know what type of play the coach should run in a given situation, who's the current rushing leader, that still makes you a nerd.

It tells you it's not a Kraut release, because it was released here.

No, I did not.

Absolutely, though hilariously most such people probably wouldn't see it that way. But I think we can all agree the only legitimately un-nerdy breed of enthusiast out there is the steelbook/slipcover enthusiast. That's just objectively cool stuff, folks

You all do know I started the nerd crap out of a harmless joke right?

But since we are going into it, everyone is a nerd. Comic book nerd. Sports nerd. Sex nerd (). Beating up nerds Nerd (called a bully I guess).

And the hipster thing. I wear Vans and Converse, though never wore skinny jeans. Can't fit my 3rd leg in them. I wear tighter jeans but not those "skinny" jeans that fans of "bands" that wear finger-less gloves wear. That brings me to this. Who started this new fashion for this new "rock" era? The striped mittens. The short hair with long glued to the forehead bangs. And what is with the singing like a girl on the verses then yelling on the chorus and no one can figure out WTF they are saying? What happened to mainstream rock? Damn you Guns N Roses for breaking up! It use to be dress up like a girl to get laid. Now it's dress up like a girl to get the Twilight fans to buy your cd.

CG, that's so 3 years ago. Plus, those "bands" you mention are still in the mainstream. Search this nations underground music scene, and you'll find an insane amount of unheard of talent. Every single show (most people call them concerts) I've been to in the past 2 years have been in people's basements or living rooms. When you find the real music, fashion plays no role in it.

[Show spoiler]This is what you find in the music scene today. Lots of flannel. Lots of beanies. Lots of facial hair. No swoopy bangs, no skin tight jeans, no fingerless gloves. All that stuff was spewed out of Hot Topic years back. (I took this picture at a show a month ago)

The thing I've never understood is the ski cap indoors bit. It's just not hipsters, too.

One would think one's head would get too warm

There's only two reasons I can think of for wearing a ski cap indoors:

1. Head is cold, have the chills
2. Robbing a bank.

Excellent choices. The Leopard is one of the few Criterions left that I'm interested in getting still. Never thought much about City Girl, but I may pick it up at some point soon.
