Yes, and they should get the rights to Inglorious Basterds and release that as well. Snarky I know, In Bruges is very watchable and Film4 puts out a lot of great stuff but they're not movies I'd personally want in the Criterion Collection.

Honestly, does Criterion have a mandate to move away from important classic movies when it comes to HD? It just seems to me that they're focusing even more energy on releasing contemporary films on Blu-ray while keeping the classics mainly as SD releases.

I would disagree with you on that one. Their BD output so far appears to be a healthy mix of films from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s. I also think it's a bit to early to make that comment, since they've only been releasing high def for about 8 months...

yeah.... 23 or 24 releases isn't enough to use as a basis for statements like "This is their new direction"

Besides.... as stated, I think they've released a good mix.... in the early-goings, it's obviously more likely they'll release films that have recently been given new remasters etc.... so their choice for what films to release on Blu-ray currently isn't solely based on "These are the first 50 films we want to release.... O.K.... let's begin working on them"

Two weeks. I'm getting worried.

I guess it depends on the master...... I didn't see it theatrically, but rest assured..... The Blu-rays Criterion have put out thus far have been the best examples of theater quality replication to date.....

Do you have any Criterion Blu-rays? They really have done an amazing job, but for those familiar with their DVD and LD efforts, it's not a big surprise.

and I don't know if this has been shown at film festivals etc. from film..... either way, I'm only 30 (31 is knocking on the door ) so I missed this in the theaters by a good 40 years

Don't have criterion in norway.Think that is native to america. But found the criterion edition of it on DVD to be very good, but it's a grainy film so we'll have to wait and see

What Region is Norway? perhaps you could get a region free player.... I know I would!

Is "North By Northwest" being released in Norway??? It's not Criterion, but it's another "Must Own" Hitchcock film.

Watched Kagemusha, still a wonderful movie but I would not call it a reference BD, PQ was alright but far from being the best. I don't buy as many Criterion as many of you, as this been a norm of these movies? It's still better then the DVD but not that amazing. It's my first Criterion BD, I was maybe expecting way too much?

The Third Man (because of the attention to detail with lighting and angles) is FANTASTIC..... if you think Casablanca looks great.... you'd appreciate this one. Bottle Rocket is "as good as it can be" by all accounts, because of the source. Benny Buttons is a fine example of what Criterion can do when they have a great source to start with. Reference quality in my book.

The fact that many of the titles they release were done with rough source materials is indicative to what they're capable of doing. The best part of Criterion, is that they're up-front with the processes they use in the restoration of their transfers. Monsoon Wedding (upcoming) will likely be a treat for the senses.... Criterion rarely "misses" which is why they're so widely regarded..... they release films at such a slow pace, because quality is always their top priority over quantity......

I'm not sure on this last point.... so take it for what it's worth, but despite the fact that Kurasawa is a legend.... The resources available to him in 1980 probably paled in comparison to those available to the leading hollywood directors at the time.

Thanks Beta, I suppose you are right that what was giving to work with back then is the best that Criterion could do with the movie. The movie is just as wonderful as ever and while I do find it way better then my DVD I was a little disapointed at first on the PQ. At the end it just did not matter much as the movie just totaly pull me in as always with Kurosawa I guess I went in expecting a little too much, still very happy I got this on BD

George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola actually stepped in to help finance this film with 20th Century Fox, so I'm sure he had access to whatever he needed as these two Hollywood legends were huge fans. It ended up being one of the most expensive films produced in Japan up until that point.

I've seen you post regarding the release of Che on Criterion BD, and this is the release I'm waiting for as well.

The problem is I've not seen it CONFIRMED in any of these articles! "A Christmas Tale" was only released in standard def on Criterion, so it seems not all titles can be assumed to be released in BD. Any insight to Che, specifically?

Default If anyone has seen Che BD Criterion confirmation

please post it. Some articles "confirm" seemingly without a source, and there might not be official confirmation from Criterion until Sept 15th (approx).

Thank you. As I wrote prior, "A Christmas Tale" wasn't released in BD, so while reading those articles it seems safe to assume Che will be out in BD, it seems to me actual confirmation is still avoiding me.

It seems pretty clear from those articles that this partnership includes BD and DVD releases. I can't imagine them releasing such a recent film on DVD only.
