I have a general "transfer" question, that perhaps Pro-B could help with, or maybe someone else.
I was watching "Mystery Train" again last night, and there is a scene where the Japanese couple are walking with the skyline in the background..... There is some damage on the print, what looks like a large backwards "C" drawn in pencil, or perhaps a hair, etc... right in the middle of the screen, at the bottom. I guess it could have been a rip, dirt, etc. but it's thin, so I'm guessing a rip or hair..... It's not a big deal, but certainly very noticeable (my wife said "What's on the screen?" and she's usually oblivious to detail, lack there-of, etc... ) My question is this: It certainly wouldn't have gone unnoticed during the transfer process, so I'm guessing there was print damage that just couldn't be repaired (leaning towards a rip/tear) so if that's the case, wouldn't there be some sort of digital manipulation tool or smoothing tool etc. that could be used to touch up just this one particular part, or is it a "turn a dial and affect the entire shot, or nothing" type of thing? I don't think my wife would have appreciated me stopping the film to snap a picture, so hopefully someone else knows the flaw I'm speaking of. |

Watched "Seven Samurai" last night. I was amazed at what Criterion was able to do. Unbelievable. It was a pleasure to revisit the film, after decades of seeing t.v. airings and DVD's. A cinematic treasure has been saved by Criterion.
