Well I only made it about 1/2 way though (was a little ambitious I guess that I could stay awake for a 3 hour movie which I started at 10pm).

I think it looks pretty good and I thought the AQ was pretty good on what I've got through so far. It is pretty grainy at times and does not have huge amounts of detail all the time but I guess either the film itself is like this or they didn't have access to original elements? I have never seen this in any other format so I have nothing to compare it to.

I need to start renting some of these films from Netflix. I have seen The Seventh Seal, which I watched in a college film class. But I have so many great movies that I still need to check out, such as The Third Man. I've been pretty lazy with my Netflix account. I've had the Ken Burns documentary "Unforgivable Blackness" checked out for several months. I watched the first disc but still haven't gotten around to watching the second disc.

Good afternoon,

Pierot le fou arrives in a clear case,

Complete Monterey Pop Festival arrives in a large, very solid holder (slightly sturdier than the one used for I Am Curious), containing two discs, both in separate clear cases. Essentially, these are two single discs.

Reviews on the way.

I would put "The Third Man" "Wages of Fear" and "The 400 Blows" at the top of your list. In addition to "The Seventh Seal" they're my favorite films released by Criterion so far.

I loved The Seventh Seal. Almost wrote my term paper on it but ended up writing it on The Truman Show. That teacher made us watch some pretty interesting movies, including the likes of Stalker by Tarkovsky. At some point I need to try to track that one down and watch it again. Another great one was Rashomon. I still haven't seen Seven Samurai or any of his other films outside of Rashomon. Gotta start diving into them though.

There's a link to the BD release on the Blu-ray.com article, at least a link to a page on this site...Hopefully this will not go the way "Ran" where it was announced for Blu and then, woefully, was gone.

Soo, as many of you know I bought a house. Is it crazy to forego cable/satellite and get caught up on DVD/Blus?
I may go the antenna route, but even that seems like a $60 waste right now.

The fact that ESPN has the rights to Monday Night Football now, is the main driving force preventing me from dumping satellite.

I still get full cable. That may change in the coming years though.

I have cable and pray daily for a 24-7 Criterion Collection channel similar to the movies available over on The Auteurs website. Even though, I sometimes can't even keep up with all the movies I record from IFC, Sundance Channel, & Turner Classic Movies. IFC just showed Criterion's upcoming "A Christmas Tale" last week and I still have it sitting on my DVR waiting to be watched.

Just out of curiosity, does the holder box display the collection spine number (167) with the clear cases displaying their individual numbers (168 and 169)? I've decided to get this release after all, so I'm just trying to get an idea of the overall look of the package.

And speaking of Venice -- I haven't been to the Biennale in years; Marco Müller killed it for me when those metal detectors were installed outside each venue. You couldn't go out to have a quick tramezzino between screenings if you happened to have a laptop or a camera in your bag; it would all just take too long. And it used to be such a relaxed, lovely festival; one where you could run into Kim Ki-Duk or Tsai Ling-Miang in a local trattoria, and just chat with them. It was really so different from Berlin or Cannes in that respect; and Karlovy Vary or Sarajevo, for all their charms, are never going to get there.

...sorry for the wistful sidetrack.

Well... I just looked for the reviews of the upcoming titles, and they weren't there, so for whatever reason I decided to read the Kagemusha review again... and I don't know if I didn't make the connection previously, but I realized this may be the poorest reviewed Criterion title yet..... Good marks, but certainly less praised than previous Criterion titles.

My conscience has forced me to cancel all of my forthcoming pre-orders (except for Heat and Sunrise) which means no more Criterions for now.

I just purchased the Beatles Remastered Mono Box Set from the Beatles online store, as many online retailers are sold out of both the Mono and Stereo editions and I had to pounce. At almost $300 shipped, I felt obliged to cancel everything I could. And because of that July B&N/Amazon.com sale, I still have about twelve Criterions to sift through before I'm caught up to September in date release.

P.S. Also got the stereo remasters of Abbey Road, Let It Be and Yellow Submarine from Amazon to complete the collection. Then added Past Masters to get the other original stereo tracks.
