What Polanski did was despicable. Drugged and raped a 13 year old girl and ran from punishment. However, I can still watch and enjoy his work because I regard his personal life as a different matter from his art. I don't know how much of a cut he gets from a Blu-Ray sale...a few pennies perhaps? Not enough to keep me from buying the movies of his I want on Blu-Ray.

Unfortunately, in this day and age, an apology doesn't exactly cut it. Let's not forget that by pretty much all definitions, he is guilty of rape.

As for buying his films, I have some, and I will probably buy more at some point, but I do think about it. I also think it is important to keep in mind that a lot of artists have done some pretty horrible things...heck, Burroughs shot his wife in the face. Does that mean they aren't good artists? No. Does it mean that it might be worth thinking about the larger questions raised by these issues? Absolutely.

On another note, I am really curious about today's announcement, especially after Ryan Gallagher tweeted something about how there is going to be some debate about the covers...Does this mean more illustrations and "comic book" covers? If so, I wonder what titles that would go with...

Edit: Here is his tweet: "I predict an interesting discussion of some cover art tomorrow."

Does that mean that Criterion will still be trying to decide on a cover art for that said title meaning just a BLACK square in place of the cover? or a Cover art some may find either shocking?

I agree, but there's not much more he can do.

People like Kobe Bryant get away with rape, yet people seem not to care about that. At least Polanski has regret for his actions about that, unlike douchebags like Bryant.

He could come back and face trial.

And there is a reason I hate the Lakers...and it isn't just because I am a Nuggets fan.

This whole discussion is kind of timely. I was thinking about watching my old DVD copy of Repulsion tonight to decide if I want to buy the Criterion blu tomorrow.

And I recommend you get Repulsion on Blu-ray. Great quality.

I wonder if they'll offer a few cover options for a title and accept "votes" via their Facebook page?
Or something along those lines

Ditto on Repulsion. It has one of the most disturbing, unsettling ending shots of all time. Gave me chills.

There's always debate on the covers.

People HATED the "Lil Senso" cover a few months ago.

Yeah. It seems like people reserve the most scorn for the covers that feature drawings instead of film images.

Even though the drawn covers are the best ones.

I definitely like a lot of them...

So here is a tidbit from Criterion Cast's twitter feed:

"While they haven't updated the art or release date, Criterion now lists the Fear and Loathing page with "Blu-ray special edition features"”

Yeah, this should be announced in a bit. This is not a simple mistake, especiallly with the DTSHD-MA confirmation.

Sweet I'll have no problem upgrading this title on to a CC Blu.
