To be honest I can't wait to buy the new cases. I will pay a decent price for them, I can't stand even looking at the paper cases. They are an eyesore.

That would be awesome. Even if they charge a bit, I'd spring for it.

i completely disagree!! i actually loved the digipack cases, they were classy and different and stood out from the pack which is what criterion cases have always done. the plastic new ones are okay, but too similar to everything else, i wish they would have kept going with the sick ass originals.

Nice! I'll upgrade to plastic. Heck, I just got my proper-sized "Marienbad" replacement in the mail a few weeks back.

Sorry but it is so hard to get a decent looking paper case of some of these titles. My THIRD MAN looks horrible. if the packaging was realyl sturdy and the paper quality thicker, it would work better. I love the standard DVD cases for releases like The Furies, Man Who Fell to Earth, etc... I think the BD outer slipcover case for the Monterey Set. It is higher quality and hosuses the releases in the keep case.

Think the clear keep cases are very classy and look 100 times better than the normal blue BD cases. I love the thickness etc.

but I think original cases could have been made better the slipcover should have been opened from the side the top bottom openings were awful to deal with esp dust, corners bend so easily they won't last long at all.

I do hope they will release the earlier titles with the newer style cases for future pressings as well, as I have a feeling whatever replacement programme they have in mind won't be very accommodating to international people.

I think the initial cases would have been fine, and in fact very classy, if they had used a 5-sided slipcover instead of the 4-sided ones they went with. A 5-sided slipcover has only the right- or left-spine open, meaning the fold-out digipack is secured between the top and bottom sides. This way, no dust would fall into the digipack, and there'd be no fear of the digipack slipping out when you picked the slipcover up off your shelf. And with 5 sides instead of 4, the slipcover would be structurally stronger and more resistant to bends.

They use the 5-sided slipcovers for their DVD digipack releases, and they actually use one for the upcoming Complete Monterey Pop Blu-ray release (though that has plastic cases inside, not a digipack). If they had done that from the start on Blu-ray, I wouldn't even be considering replacing the packaging like I am right now.

I would also love to have the new plastic cases as long as I do not have to send back my original cardboard cases. It would be nice to have both, plus it would be a hassle to send in all 9 cardboard cases....

I think it's a given that artwork (probably not booklet) will be included, most people won't buy a blank case and then try and print out the art.

There's going to be a charge.

Anyways with the DVD releases I really like the variations of all their packaging, but not the blurays. The cardboard makes them look really, really cheap I will be replacing The Last Emperor as soon as possible.

A Blu-ray of Blast of Silence would be nice. Such a moody film, and unique narration (though I'm sure it's been used elsewhere I don't think I've ever seen it, or rather heard it, in any other film).

So this is slightly off-track, but with the UK Blu-ray release delayed for over a year, I decided to look for a decent copy of the Criterion Straw Dogs DVD, and I found a copy on Amazon Marketplace for $30 "Like New", but looking at the cover I also hada really interesting and geeky thought. I think this may be the only Criterion DVD (or possibly LD as well) that includes not just the name of the director (as nearly all do except for compilations) but also the name of an actor that appears in the film (Dustin Hoffman). Can anyone confirm this?

EDIT: Never mind, it isn't the only one, there are at least a handful more (not to mention #1 Grand Illusion!).
