In regards to the DVD Beaver listing of Double Life of Veronique

I realize screen shots aren't the best judge of a transfer, but I am surprised as such a drastically lower Criterion bit rate, however I prefer the more grain look to their release. Not sure how others feel?

They both look great to me. I'm not going to get the Criterion of this film though....the Artificial Eye is plenty satisfying.

Spellbinding movie for those here that haven't seen it. Irene Jacob is gorgeous to boot.

A while back when the Criterion was first announced I did mention the AE disc had unnecessary noise reduction, which then caused a minor row. The Criterion seems to be what I hoped for, i.e. the same transfer, but with the grain intact. Nice, will keep my pre-order!

^stuff like that is happening. if the documentary/indie world is catching wind of 3-D, then it's here to stay. i don't think 3-D is a gimmick like it was in the 50s/60s. sooner or later it will happen. it's only a matter of time

so many skeptics though
Needs to be looked at from two perspectives: hardware and software. From a hardware standpoint (except for the glasses), for 2011, we've gotten past the "3D ready" to "3D included" in most sets, since they seem to have gotten the cost down low enough that all but the lowest priced sets have the 3D screens and transmitter built-in. The glasses, are obviously, another issue and I suspect there's more profit selling glasses than there is selling sets and there seems to be lots of resistance purchasing 4-5 pairs of these things (although there were lots of bundle offers over the holidays).

However, it was reported that 3D and high-end sets did not sell well over the holidays. So the real question is not what happens with the 2011 model line, because those sets are already designed. The real question is what will they do for 2013? While I don't know whether 3D capability has any negative impact on 2D picture, if there's any chance of that, I'd like to see Panny and Sony produce a high end set without 3D.

IMO, 3D needs to get bigger before it can fail. People need to see it and get tired of it. Or, what needs to happen is that if people stop going to 3D theatrical screenings (which are most costly), then 3D will fail. But as long as on a per-screen basis, both the theatre and the studios make more on 3D, we'll see more 3D films. And if they do them for the theatres, they'll produce them for home video. Even if the 3D fails for live action, I think we'll continue to see it for animated films.

The other aspect will be as to when the cable and satellite based 3D TV channels launch and how successful they will be. If people like them, 3D overall should do well. If people hate them because the 3d gives them a headache (very possible with live 3D sports and other content, where the 3D can't be well controlled), then 3D will fail.

In 50 to 100 years, this will begin all over again when they finally are able to produce live holograms, although by 100 years, we'll all probably have robots who are programmed to "act out" their roles right in front of us (especially porno.) Luckily, I won't be around to see it.

I don't know. That list also has The Leopard as being OOP, which it obviously isn't.

At least some good has come from all this speculation, that being (seemingly) lots of people are buying Chungking Express and (hopefully) are watching it.

Yes, the 2004 issue of the The Leopard (DVD) seems to be out of print. Only available from 3rd party sellers on Amazon.

Yeah, may. It also lists the DVD version of Leopard. So it may also be a confirmation that the paper versions are no longer in print, and that plastic versions are coming along soon.

Guess it just depends on whether or not you feel lucky as to whether you're willing to wait it out.

No it's based on Michael's Movie Mayhem from what I read somewhere.

I asked on Criterion's facebook page if Chungking Express was OOP and they responded "No!" with a link to their product page.

I know Criterion DVD collectors are few and far between on this forum but I'm selling my entire Criterion DVD collection (over 350) on eBay. If you're at all interested send me a PM. Thanks!

Glad I held back on the Artificial Eye Veronique. The Criterion one looks like a damn good release as well. I'm keeping the Pre-order.

I would suggest just getting a physical copy from Netflix of any Criterion blu-ray film instead of streaming it on Netflix.

I have the Artificial Eye release, but I'll pick up the Criterion too. It's one of my top 5 favorite films. The Criterion has more extras (and apparently retains more grain) but it doesn't have the 5.1 track that's on the Artificial Eye. The AE was cheap enough that I'll just hold on to it.

Leaning towards skipping the CC altogether. I have the S-DVD CC and the AE blu. Kinda hard to justify the purchase.
